Instantly, Jas’s expression turned pale, and his hand trembled. He was too shocked to process what he had just heard.
"My mother?" he repeated, fearing he hadn’t heard her correctly or perhaps refusing to accept the truth.
Sophie nodded as she smiled bitterly.
As she noticed Jas’s expression darkening, she continued, "Your mother appeared at my house two days before we registered our marriage. She offered a large sum of money to leave you."
"She did that? How did she know your house?" Jas asked, confused. He rembered that no one in his family knew about Sophie.
"Yes. I don’t know how she found my house, but I rember you were on a business trip then..." she explained.
Jas opened his mouth several tis, trying to find the words to ask, but nothing ca out. He still couldn’t believe his mother would do sothing so horrible.
Sophie chuckled when she saw Jas still struggling to find the words to respond.
She continued her words, "I was offended when your mother forced to leave you and offered money. When I refused to take her money and walk away, she claid you were marrying the woman they chose and that she was pregnant. That’s the reason I left you, Jas..."
"WHAT!? Sophie, why did you never tell about this?" Jas asked, shocked beyond words. "How could you believe what my mother said without talking to first?"
Jas felt puzzled. He couldn’t understand why his mother would say sothing like that or why Sophie hadn’t confronted him about it.
Sophie didn’t answer his question. Instead, she pulled her hand away and smiled bitterly at him.
"Jas, of course, I didn’t believe your mother. Do you rember the day before we registered our marriage? We had planned to et at the restaurant?" Sophie asked. That day, she plans to tell him everything.
"Yes, I rember," Jas replied. "I waited for you there, but you never showed up; even after a few hours, I waited for you."
Jas let out a deep sigh. If there had been a telephone then, he wouldn’t have had trouble finding her. He could have called and asked where she was, but there was no quick way to connect with her back then. He had been too afraid to leave the restaurant, worried she would arrive just after he left.
After the day got dark, he rushed to her house, an hour from their eting place. When he arrived, the house was already empty. The hoowner told him that she had moved out in a rush.
At that mont, he deeply regretted not telling her about the house he had bought for them to live in. He had planned to surprise her by bringing her there after they registered their marriage.
"Jas, I ca to the restaurant but saw you talking with a woman. You both looked happy and seed to know each other. Before I confronted you, your mother suddenly appeared. She stopped and explained who the woman was: your pregnant fiancée."
Sophie paused when she noticed how angry Jas was. His features beca red as if blood had rushed to his face.
However, she didn’t intend to hold anything back. She continued, "Your mother begged to let you go for the sake of your child and the woman. How could I stay? I had no choice but to leave quietly from your life..."
Sophie felt the familiar pain hit her once more as if soone had just rubbed lemon juice on her wounded heart.
Jas suddenly felt as if half of his soul had vanished hearing Sophie’s explanation. Her explanation suddenly brought back mories of a few years ago when his mother unexpectedly appeared at the restaurant with a woman they had arranged for him to marry.
Of course, he had refused the arrangent because he was about to marry Sophie.
What confused him was how his mother knew about Sophie. He hadn’t yet introduced her to his family because he was sure they would reject her. He planned to introduce Sophie only after they registered their marriage, believing his parents would never force him to divorce her.
Jas was distraught, his hands tightly clenched. He noticed that Sophie was still avoiding eye contact, so he took his ti to figure out what had happened that day.
It was all just a misunderstanding, but one thing puzzled him: How did his mother know about Sophie? How could she have hidden the fact that she had separated them? All this ti, he never imagined that his mother could be responsible for this.
After a while, he began to calm down. He was no longer as upset as before.
He turned to see Sophie, and when he saw her more relaxed, he took her hand.
"Sophie, I never knew my mother t you. Until now, I had no idea she was the one who separated us..."
Sophie frowned in response. She rembered his mother telling her that Jas had agreed to break up with her, claiming he had asked her to et at the restaurant to discuss it.
At that ti, she felt heartbroken. Following Violet Parker’s plan, she decided to vanish from his life. She accepted Violet’s bag, unaware it was filled with money. It wasn’t until she reached her destination that she realized what it contained.
’God! Why do I have to feel this tornt again?’ Sophie wondered, recalling all those painful mories that shattered her heart once more.
Seeing how confused she was, Jas squeezed Sophie’s cold hand.
"Sophie, the woman you saw was the one my family chose for to marry. Whatever you heard from my mother, all of that was a lie; I never slept with her; how could she be pregnant with ?"
Sophie frowned.
"I never married that woman. I refused the arranged marriage because I had you, and we were about to register our marriage; how could I accept that woman?"
No words escaped Sophie’s lips as she was shocked, unable to respond to what he had just said. ’What the hell is this? His mother lied to ?’
"Jas, your mother told you had agreed to break up with . And... And... I saw you happily talking to that woman in the restaurant."
