"And, Grandma, we actually have another gift for you..." Abigail appeared calm, but she felt extrely nervous inside. She was about to tell Grandma about Grandpa Philips.
Abigail’s words were enough to bring a smile back to Sophie’s face, but a furrow appeared on her forehead when she heard the last part.
Curious, Sophie asked, "Another gift? Why spend more money on ? There’s no need, Abby, Sawyer..." She refused, unwilling to accept anything more from them.
Abigail laughed at how adorable her Grandma was in refusing their next gift.
"Grandma, we’re not spending money on this..." she explained, glancing at Sawyer as if silently asking whether Grandpa Philips had arrived yet.
When she saw him nod, her heart beca tense. It was about ti her grandparents t, and she looked forward to their reunion.
"This is a special gift for you, Grandma. But before I tell you what it is, I want to ask you sothing important," Abigail said casually. However, her heartbeat quickened, and she felt nervous.
"Sure... What is it, dear?" Sophie asked, although she was confused when she saw how suspicious Abigail was now.
Abigail swallowed, feeling her throat dry. She was thrilled about telling Grandma about Grandpa Philips.
"Grandma, how are you feeling now? I an, with your heart condition? Has it been a problem recently?" She felt terrible for asking such a foolish question since she knew her grandmother didn’t have a heart problem.
"Since when do I have a heart condition?" Sophie laughed, though she was starting to grow suspicious of her granddaughter. "Abby, I have never felt better than today. Because today is my happiest day, you two are here."
Abigail wrapped her Grandma’s hand in hers, an awkward smile framing her lips.
"Grandma, a few days ago, I t soone who claid my face was similar to yours—" Abigail deliberately paused to check her reaction. She expected her grandmother to be shocked. Instead, Grandma laughed out loud, surprising her.
"Hahaha... That’s not the first ti soone said that, right?" Sophie gently patted Abigail’s hand, feeling proud. She was so happy that her beautiful granddaughter took much of her genes.
After Grandma’s laugh subsided, Abigail continued, "The one who said that was Jas Philips..."
Seeing Sophie’s smile vanish instantly confird the doubts still lingering in Abigail’s mind.
"Who? You, you t who!?" Sophie asked, worried her ears were playing tricks on her. While trying to appear calm, she didn’t want Abigail to notice sothing.
But it was too late because Abigail clearly saw Sophie’s shock. She silently smiled before responding, "Yes, Grandma, the one who said that was Jas Philips. He is actually Sawyer’s Grandpa’s best friend."
"I see," Sophie said calmly. She appeared composed and didn’t worry about Abigail eting Jas Philips—the man she t might not be the sa man she had previously t.
’Ugh, wait, she said. Nathaniel’s friend? How so? That man is supposed to be dead, right!? Did she et Jas? Seriously!?’ Sophie grew confused.
Abigail laughed inwardly when she saw how hard Grandma was trying to hide her shock.
Even though Abigail knew the answer, she wanted to hear it directly from her Grandma. "Is Jas Philips my grandpa?"
The question took Sophie aback. She tried to suppress her shock while laughing before saying, "Oh dear, don’t joke around. How could soone like Jas Philips be your grandpa? Wealthy people like him wouldn’t know poor people like . Life is rarely like a Cinderella story, dear."
Sophie shook her head, and a calm smile erged as she continued casually, "Abby, I told you before... your grandpa passed away a long ti ago. Before you were born. And to answer your curiosity, Jas Philips is not your grandpa."
Abigail knew she would hear her Grandma’s refusal. The funny thing was, she would probably believe her if she hadn’t done a DNA test with Grandpa Philips. Grandma sounded so convincing when she claid that Grandpa was already dead.
’Grandma, what happened back then? Why do you insist on lying to cover up the truth?’ Abigail wondered. She was surprised by how her Grandma’s calm gaze t her own. She didn’t understand why Grandma tried to hide Jas Philips from them.
Abigail let out a deep sigh; she couldn’t wait any longer. She grabbed her bag and handed Grandma a white envelope containing the DNA test results that Sawyer had given her this morning.
Sophie looked at the envelope in her hand, puzzled. "What is it, Abby?" she asked, turning her gaze back to Abigail. "Oh!? Is your other gift money?" A smile erged on her lips, hoping her guess was correct.
Hearing her Grandma’s words, Abigail almost laughed. She shook her head before responding, "Well, that’s not money, Grandma. Inside the envelope are my DNA test results between Jas Philips and . Grandma, please take a look..."
Sophie’s smile slowly faded, and her hand trembled as she held the envelope. She glanced back and forth between the envelope and Abigail. She was too shocked to speak. Her mind could not process that Abigail had done a DNA test to confirm her biological relation with Jas Philips.
Even without seeing the result, Sophie already knew what it would reveal. She couldn’t deny it anymore. Her hand tightened around the envelope as she struggled to find the right words to respond to Abigail because she knew Jas had already died.
’How could she do a DNA test with him? Did she take samples from others in Philips’s family?’ So many questions now filled her mind and confused her.
After allowing Sophie a few monts of silence, Abigail continued, "The result stated that Jas Philips is my grandfather..."
Sophie still said nothing, nor did she show any of her emotions.
Abigail didn’t rush to break the silence again. Instead, she gave Sophie ti to calm down and gather her thoughts before responding.
However, several minutes had passed, and Sophie still hadn’t spoken. She lowered her head, stared at the envelope in her hand, and avoided eye contact with Abigail.
"Grandma, can you say sothing?" Abigail wanted to ask like that, but the words never left her lips. Instead, she looked at Sawyer as if asking for help.
Seeing Sawyer giving her a sign about Jas Philips’ position, who was already outside, Abigail finally spoke up, breaking the silence in the room.
"Grandma, Jas Philips is outside waiting to et you—"
