"That reveal was so hot."

lanie rolled her eyes at Laela’s dramatic declaration but continued munching on her food.

Laela, completely unfazed, pressed on with a dreamy sigh, "I an, seriously—if you were my wife, I would’ve thrown my heart at your feet! They had so many incriminating pictures and then to add to that the accusation, etc. Anyone would have been suspicious or at least wary! But not you! You did not jusrt believe in him, you went and even saved his reputation for him. You were like a knightess in shining armor... No, scratch that. A goddess in shimring battle gear who descended from the heavens to save him from absolute ruin. He’d have to be made of stone to not feel moved!"

lanie rolled her eyes, picked up a fry and stuffed it into her friend’s mouth and said "Laela, are you giving yourself competition in flattering now? Co off it. It’s like you’ve beco the president of my fanclub."

"Oh, please! This isn’t flattery—it’s just facts! Think about it. There’s a reason why all those classic tropes exist—girls falling for their saviors and whatnot. It’s because it makes our hearts go all fluttery and weak-kneed! And don’t even try to tell Hotness Overload Adam wasn’t affected. Whatever you did must’ve sent shockwaves through his very soul. I swear, I wish I’d been there to witness it in high definition, slow motion and all!"

lanie shrugged nonchalantly, a sly glint in her eyes. "I don’t know about his heart fluttering... but sothing else was definitely doing so fluttering."

Laela paused mid-bite and slowly turned to stare at her, eyes narrowed with suspicion and intrigue. She picked up a lone French fry and wagged it threateningly at lanie’s face.

"Miss lanie," she said, voice low and dramatic, "the caras—all the caras—clearly caught you leaving the venue with Mr. Adam Hotness Incarnate. So tell ... did he perhaps repay you the old-fashioned way? You know, like in those ancient scrolls of seduction, where a man repays a woman’s heroic deeds with his body? Are you no longer virgin lanie?"

lanie shook her head and answered,"I am still that but..." Her cheeks heated as she told Laela about what they’d done and how he’d made her co... before they had been interrupted.

Laela had no idea how to close her mouth. She was in shock as she stared at her friend and hissed," Holy sh**! lanie Collins! Instead of jumping his bones, you actually hid in your room? What is wrong with you?"

lanie threw her hands up, looking sowhere between exasperated and embarrassed. She did not tell that she had even considered hiding there for a few days instead of just a few hours. "What was I supposed to do, huh? Just throw myself at him like so oversexed, on the shelf, desperate heroine in an old romance novel?"

Laela didn’t even blink. Instead, she leaned back, arms crossed, and gave lanie the most unimpressed look known to mankind. "Uh... duh. Yes. That’s exactly what you were supposed to do. I an co on... that man is your husband only for three years... you need to ’milk’ that really well okay... if you get what I an."

To really drive the point ho, she added a crude hand gesture that made her aning crystal clear but made lanie turn a deep shade of red. "aela!", she hissed, swatting at her. "That is so inappropriate. You’re unbelievable."

"And you," Laela said, pointing a finger at her like a disappointed teacher, "are a frustratingly hot, emotionally repressed, self-sabotaging disaster. Do you have any idea how many won would have committed several minor cris just to be in your place?"

lanie gave her a dry look. "Trust , I have a very clear idea. But that is not the point the thing is..."

"Don’t try todeflect," Laela snapped, but then paused when she noticed the slight shift in lanie’s expression. "Wait... what is it?"

"There’s sothing I haven’t told you yet." She paused, then leaned in a little, lowering her voice. "There’s a possibility he has a kid. With Saira Vaugn."

Laela blinked. "I’m sorry, what?"

lanie nodded grimly. "Yeah. I don’t know for sure, and neither does he. That is why he has been letting her hover around him instead of aggressively throwing her out of his life. He wants to know the truth first—wants confirmation that she either miscarried or gave birth."

Laela whistled. This was really unexpected. Marrying and then going their separage ways after both of them had fun was different than being a stepmother to a child. But what shocked her even more was what lanie said next, " If she did have his kid, she could use that to keep him on a leash. I can’t shake the feeling she’ll try to blackmail him. Guilt him. Maybe even try to cozy back into his life if it serves her purpose."

Laela tilted her head and stared at lani, studying her carefully. Her friend might not know it yet but she was already deeply involved," You’ve thought deeply about this. Why? Are you planning to play the Kinght again?"

lanie didn’t answer right away. Her fingers toyed with the edge of her napkin, her gaze distant as she tried to think of sothing. She was sure that she was forgetting sothing. But to Laela, she said, "I don’t know. I an... I didn’t plan to save him the first ti either. It just... happened. And I doubt I can ’save’ him again. I an there is nothing I can do..."

Knowing her friend, Laela did not try to dissuade her or even ask her if what she ant, she simply finished the last of the fry and ask her," So, how do you plan to find the truth?Bribing a nurse at maternity clinics around the world? So other hidden technology like the Lexa one, that the common people are unaware of?"

lanie sent her a look that said Leala knew her too well.
