Chapter 137: Chapter 98: A Pleasant Surprise

The Chief Constables exchanged grim glances. They all realized Wang Xiongying was treating them like murder suspects. They had always been the investigators, but now they were the suspects—it was no surprise they looked displeased.

"Write carefully, all of you. Don’t even think about altering your handwriting," Zhou Xu declared nacingly, standing beside Wang Xiongying with his hand on his sword hilt.

Anyone could see that this Official from the South City District City Guard Headquarters treated Wang Xiongying as his master and was now eager to impress him.

Shen Qingshuang sat calmly, her expression cold and a trace of mockery in her eyes. In her opinion, trying to find the culprit behind the massacre by comparing handwriting was a fool’s errand.

But she had to admit, the only lead they had in this case were the few words the killer had left in blood.

The killer had been too ticulous, leaving almost no clues at the scene. Not even the neighbors had seen anyone suspicious. No matter how brilliant the investigator, it was impossible to find any trace of the culprit at the cri scene.

One by one, the Chief Constables dipped the Long Saber in duck blood, wrote the words in question on a sheet of yellow paper, and then signed their own nas.

Wang Xiongying examined each sample, then took out a sheet of yellow paper with a copy of the killer’s handwriting from the cri scene. After a careful comparison, he found no exact matches.

But he wasn’t one to give up so easily. He studied the samples again and finally singled out three suspicious ones.

"Li Xianliang?"

"Present!" Li Xianliang cupped his fists in a salute. He looked to be twenty-three or twenty-four, with a Long Saber at his hip. He was tall and slender, with a narrow waist and long, powerful arms—he cut an impressive figure.

"What Saber Technique do you cultivate?" Wang Xiongying asked after scrutinizing him.

Li Xianliang’s handwriting was fluid and graceful, and it bore a strong resemblance to that of the Wang Family’s killer.

"Flowing Light Saber Technique," Li Xianliang replied calmly.

Wang Xiongying frowned. The Flowing Light Saber Technique was a Superior Saber Technique that focused on agility and speed. In terms of style, the Saber Montum cultivated from the Flowing Light Saber Technique matched that of the killer.

The Flowing Light Saber Technique was primarily cultivated by disciples of the Jiang Family in the Inner City. Li Xianliang was likely a young talent fostered by them. Given the Jiang Family’s power, Wang Li would have been unlikely to provoke Li Xianliang.

Wang Xiongying compared the two samples again and noticed many differences. The killer’s script was clean and decisive, sharp and brimming with killing intent. Li Xianliang’s writing, while fluid, completely lacked that kind of powerful presence.

At this thought, Wang Xiongying’s suspicion of Li Xianliang lessened.

He then picked up another sample, his gaze burning as he stared at Yan Jian.

Yan Jian’s handwriting also bore a decent resemblance to the killer’s, but it was too ornate, which made it seem like a poor match.

Still, he couldn’t rule Yan Jian out. ’Who’s to say he isn’t deliberately hiding that forcefulness?’

As Wang Xiongying stared, Yan Jian’s eyelid twitched. Wang Xiongying sharply caught the movent, and his suspicion toward Yan Jian grew.

He didn’t question Yan Jian, turning instead to the final sample. If there was a slight chance Yan Jian had disguised his style, then it was highly probable the writer of this last sample had done so deliberately.

The strokes were heavy, almost scraped onto the yellow paper, making it vastly different from the killer’s script.

"Chen Cheng, why are your strokes so heavy?" Wang Xiongying asked.

Chen Cheng cupped his fists. "I cultivate the Powerful Eagle Claw Skill, so it’s difficult for

to control the strength in my hands."

"Aren’t you cultivating the Wind Chasing Saber Technique?" Wang Xiongying had already learned the details about Chen Cheng from Zhou Xu.

Chen Cheng said, "I did cultivate the Wind Chasing Saber Technique, but I recently switched to the Powerful Eagle Claw Skill."

Wang Xiongying said, "Write it again. Lighter this ti, and more fluid."

"Yes, sir." Chen Cheng acknowledged, then picked up the Long Saber, dipped it in duck blood, and quickly wrote the words again on a fresh sheet of yellow paper.

He had just been cultivating the Powerful Eagle Claw Skill with his Dragon Eagle Iron Claws and was still wearing training weights, so his handwriting was naturally different than it would be without them.

Wang Xiongying took it and glanced over it, a flicker of disappointnt in his eyes. Although Chen Cheng’s strokes were light, they were firm and powerful, possessing a remarkable force. This was a world apart from the killer’s fluid script, which was suffused with the aura of the Killing Dao.

Moreover, he had been watching closely and saw that Chen Cheng wrote with extre fluency, showing no signs of deliberately disguising his style.

In the end, Wang Xiongying concluded that of the eleven Chief Constables’ samples, Yan Jian’s was the most suspicious and Chen Cheng’s was the least.

Of course, Yan Jian was only a suspect. Wang Xiongying still needed to investigate his whereabouts at the ti of the murders.

"Lord Wang, have you found anything?" Shen Qingshuang asked coldly as she rose to her feet. Everyone knew that Yan Jian and Chen Cheng were her protégés. By repeatedly questioning them, Wang Xiongying was clearly targeting her.

"I still need to investigate further!" Wang Xiongying snorted. He shot a final glance at Yan Jian before striding away with Zhou Xu and his n.

Ji Jingbei cupped his fists toward Shen Qingshuang and asked, "Lord Shen, how shall we proceed?"

From start to finish, this Lishui Division Chief Constable had maintained an air of complete detachnt.

Shen Qingshuang, who didn’t seem to know him well, replied coolly, "Since the case has been handed to Wang Xiongying, your Lishui Sub-Departnt need only cooperate with him."

"Yes," Ji Jingbei acknowledged.

"The City Guard Headquarters has many urgent matters that require my attention. You would all do well to look after yourselves," Shen Qingshuang announced, then also turned to leave, clearly wanting nothing more to do with the matter.
