Then, Bai Feng heard an annoying commotion outside.
He frowned slightly and stepped out of the tree hollow.
The White Eagle Beastn looked up at him with reverence.
Even Bai Kui, who had co to cause trouble, addressed him respectfully, "High Priest."
Bai Kui said, "Lord Bai Feng, the snake Beastman with Si Yan killed my brother, Bai Jing. Poor Bai Jing was always diligent in serving White Eagle City, and he was infected while guarding the city gates!"
The proud male White Eagle looked down upon the White Eagle Beastn below.
His voice, as cool and detached as ever, asked, "You believe the snake Beastman accompanying Si Yan took your brother’s life, so you’ve co to for an explanation?"
Enraged, Bai Kui’s face contorted. "That’s right! Si Yan shouldn’t be so malicious! She shouldn’t allow her male to kill the guardians of White Eagle City!"
Bai Feng countered, "Wasn’t it because your brother maliciously infected Si Yan that her snake Beastman took his life?"
Bai Kui looked up, her eyes red with hatred. "High Priest, if you didn’t care so much for Si Yan, would my brother have done such a thing? We all know that only if Si Yan were infected would you strive to develop a cure for this plague! Ultimately, this is all Si Yan’s fault!"
The Witch Doctor’s mouth fell open. Does that even make sense? Is her logic sound?
Bai Feng let out a cold laugh.
It was the first ti the Witch Doctor had ever seen the High Priest sneer. He had a sinking feeling that things were about to take a turn for the worse.
Sure enough, Bai Feng picked up a twig and looked at all the Beastn watching the spectacle below.
"You all think it’s Si Yan’s problem. I, however, think it’s my problem."
Bai Feng flew down gracefully, used the twig to pierce a beastman’s pustule, and then cut his own hand.
"High Priest!!!"
The White Eagle Beastn panicked and knelt.
One knelt, and then they all began to kneel, one after another.
Bai Feng said, "Since you all believe that I will only give my all if soone close to is infected, then perhaps it’s best if I beco infected myself."
Bai Feng touched the contaminated twig to his injured hand.
He maintained his usual indifferent deanor, still looking down on everyone.
But at that mont, the White Eagle Beastn truly beca frightened.
They were afraid, afraid that Lord Bai Feng would abandon them.
Bai Feng returned to the tree hollow, the Witch Doctor following. "Let’s go. I’m infected," Bai Feng stated.
The Witch Doctor replied dismissively, "Who’s going to believe you’re infected?"
Bai Feng waved his hand. "I am indeed infected. From today onwards, do not co near ."
With that, Bai Feng vanished from everyone’s sight.
The Witch Doctor was stunned.
The Beastn outside were also stunned.
The High Priest... The High Priest... Is he angry? Does he truly intend to forsake us?
In an instant, all the White Eagle Beastn were plunged into panic.
Only Bai Kui was still cursing furiously. "Bai Feng, what is the aning of this? You’d infect yourself with the plague for Si Yan? You’d forsake White Eagle City for her? After all these years in White Eagle City, you’d just abandon it like that?!"
"Enough!" Bai Shou roared.
"Everyone knows why your brother died! Do you think causing a scene makes you right? Now the High Priest is infected too. Are you satisfied?"
Bai Kui retorted, "The High Priest can’t be infected! He’s lived for so many years; it’s impossible!"
Bai Shou gave Bai Kui a cold look. "I’ve been tolerant of you because you are a female. Bai Kui, do you realize that the true faith of White Eagle City lies with the High Priest?"
Bai Kui gasped. "Lord of the Castle, what are you implying? You’re just a City Lord who only secured his position thanks to the High Priest! What right do you have to speak to like that? I am a female!"
Bai Shou’s indifferent gaze t Bai Kui’s, as did the cold stares of many other White Eagle Beastn.
Bai Shou said, "I will permit you to remain in White Eagle City, but you are not to enter the second line of defense."
Bai Kui shrieked, "Lord of the Castle, I’m a female! I am a female! How dare you not protect a female?!"
"Lord of the Castle! The beastn outside—they’ve broken in! They’re demanding to see the High Priest!"
Bai Shou snapped, "See him for what? The High Priest is furious! Go tell them White Eagle City no longer has a High Priest!"
Then, a tremor ran through the ground as a large group of diseased foreign beastn, weakened by their sickness, stord in.
The uninfected White Eagle Beastn cried out in fear, "Quick, to the second line of defense! Get the females and cubs inside!"
The entirety of White Eagle City erupted into chaos.
Everyone was shouting, consud by panic.
The Witch Doctor couldn’t be bothered with their clamor; he looked towards Bai Feng’s tree hollow.
Is Bai Feng disappointed with the beastn of White Eagle City...?
He had a feeling Bai Feng’s irrational actions weren’t solely to appease the anger of those outside.
It was probably just because Si Yan had fallen ill. Did he want to accompany her in sickness too?
The Witch Doctor quickly shook his head.
Why would he entertain such a bizarre thought?
...
Ever since drinking the soup brewed by Wang, Si Yan surprisingly felt much better.
She got out of bed, bounced around for a bit, then ran to Wang, tilting her head.
"Pretty boy, I feel so much better! I think I’m cured!"
The cold-blooded snake Beastman, whom she’d called ’pretty boy’, was montarily speechless.
"I know," he finally said.
Si Yan hopped and skipped about, finally bouncing in front of the snake Beastman again. "Don’t you think it’s amazing? I’m cured! I’m really cured!"
The snake Beastman caught the exuberantly hopping little female in his arms.
A trace of warmth flickered in his otherwise indifferent eyes.
"I know. You’ve just recovered; don’t move around too much."
"Oh." Si Yan obediently sat back down.
Just then, a visitor arrived at their small wooden cabin.
She Wang heard the sound and went out, Si Yan following him.
Outside the cabin stood a snow-white figure: it was Bai Feng.
"Bai Feng!"
Si Yan ran over. Bai Feng smiled and patted her head. "How are you? Feeling better?"
Si Yan grinned. "I’m great! I feel like I was never sick at all!"
Bai Feng assessed her condition, then looked towards She Wang.
The eyes of the two males t for an instant, and they seed to understand what the other intended to convey.
Still, Si Yan, fearing Bai Feng might move against She Wang, stepped protectively in front of the snake Beastman.
Bai Feng sighed helplessly and said to Wang Dao, "White Eagle City is no longer safe. You should stay with Si Yan and protect her."
Wang turned his head.
Si Yan asked, puzzled, "Bai Feng, if he’s protecting , then what about you?"
Bai Feng’s smile was exceptionally gentle. "I have sothing very important I must do. Si Yan, I have to entrust this place to you."
"I know the challenges here are imnse... Can you manage?"
Si Yan sensed sothing was amiss. "What are you going to do? Is it related to the plague?"
Bai Feng shook his head.
Since the plague began, the world has beco incredibly unstable for so unknown reason. He couldn’t pinpoint the cause. But this world holds everything he loves; if the world perishes, Si Yan will too. He must protect this world.
Seeing Bai Feng’s reluctance to speak, Si Yan didn’t press further. Her clear eyes shone brightly. "You always have your reasons, and I understand. Entrust this place to ; don’t worry. I’ll definitely find a way to resolve things!"
Bai Feng nodded and smiled. "Si Yan, you’ll have to take on the role of Priest sooner than expected. Give it your all."
Si Yan nodded repeatedly.
Finally, Bai Feng and She Wang exchanged a look, both males tacitly understanding what the other left unsaid.
