Hunter saw it and stopped breathing.

The path ahead narrowed to a bottleneck. Stone walls twenty feet high, closing in like teeth. Wide enough for maybe three people walking shoulder to shoulder. The kind of place where "retreat" beca a fantasy and "tactical advantage" ant absolutely nothing.

Every horror movie he’d ever watched started with a setup like this.

Rocky defile. Natural chokepoint. Perfect ambush terrain. His Foundation Realm instincts scread this was bad. This was a trap. This was exactly where you didn’t want to be.

And his spiritual sense couldn’t penetrate it properly. The corruption in the air was too thick. Like trying to see through muddy water. Any qi signatures inside would be masked. Hidden.

Perfect place for an ambush by people who wanted to stay hidden.

"We could go around," he said. Knowing the answer.

Han’s jaw tightened. "Half a day. Maybe more. And the forest..."

The forest that felt like walking through an open grave. Yeah. That forest.

"We go through," Han decided. "Classic setup. Narrow approach. High ground. Limited retreat options. But forest is worse for defense. More cover for attackers."

"And if they’re waiting for us?"

"Then we fight through to other side. Stay in formation. Protect center. Hold together no matter what." Han’s tactical mind worked visibly. "Combat ready. If ambushed, no panic. Just training. Understand?"

The Shadow Legion nodded. Weapons coming out. Hands going to hilts. Nobody looked confident. But everyone looked ready.

"And if they’re Foundation Realm?" Hunter asked quietly.

"Then you earn that cultivation base. Find out what you’re actually capable of."

Great. Wonderful. Hunter was definitely going to die today.

They entered the defile. Walls of stone rising on both sides. Road narrowing further. Shadows deeper. The air felt thick. Oppressive. Like walking into a mouth that was slowly closing.

Hunter’s Foundation Realm senses were losing their collective minds. Danger. Threat. Bad. Very bad. Extrely bad.

His hand drifted to his sword automatically. Ready. Tense. Waiting for whatever ca next.

[LUNA] MULTIPLE QI SIGNATURES DETECTED (◕‿◕✿)

[LUNA] TWENTY-ONE HOSTILES

[LUNA] ABOVE AND BEHIND ♥

[LUNA] RECOMND IMDIATE DEFENSIVE ACTION

Then figures appeared on the rocks above.

Twenty-one. Ard. Organized. Blocking the path forward and behind. Professional positioning. Coordinated movent. This wasn’t improvised. This was practiced.

Not spirit beasts. Humans. Cultivators.

But their qi felt wrong. Deeply, fundantally wrong. Like the forest corruption but concentrated. Mobile. Predatory.

Oh no. Oh fuck. Those are demonic cultivators. Those are the actual bad guys. We’re so screwed.

The lead figure stepped forward. Mid forties. Scarred face. Arms covered in deliberate cuts forming patterns. Ritual scars that pulsed with faint red light. His qi was blood red. Visibly red to anyone with spiritual senses. Made Hunter’s Foundation Realm awareness recoil violently.

And the killing intent.

God, the killing intent.

It hit Hunter like a physical wave. Not just pressure. Weight. Like gravity had tripled in his direction alone. His chest compressed. Cold flooded his lungs. His body trying to run before his brain finished processing threat. Primal terror screaming that this thing hunts people.

Not "might be dangerous." Not "could hurt you." This was predator and prey. This was food chain hierarchy made spiritual. And Hunter’s lizard brain knew exactly which category he fell into.

The weaker cultivators in their group stumbled, overwheld by the malicious intent. Qiu went pale, his newly developed qi sense recoiling from the wrongness. Chen Lao’s hand shook, his walking stick trembling against the ground. Mingzhu grabbed Wei Suyin’s arm for support, both won’s faces draining of color.

The children didn’t understand what they were feeling. Just that sothing was very, very wrong. i’s eyes went wide, her small fra going rigid. Little Sparrow pressed against Wei Lin, Gerald clutched tight. Even Tao stopped his multiplication tables mid-count.

The man smiled. All teeth. Zero warmth. "Well, well. Travelers. How fortunate."

His eyes glead with sothing that wasn’t entirely human anymore. The corruption had changed him. Made him sothing else. Sothing that wore human shape but thought like a parasite.

Hunter’s hand tightened on his sword hilt. Han’s spear ca up. The Shadow Legion tensed, sixteen souls bound together facing down predators.

"I’m Feng," the man continued. Voice too smooth. Too controlled. Like every word was calculated for maximum effect. "People call Iron Fang. This stretch of road belongs to the Iron Wolves."

He gestured casually at the bandits surrounding them. Professional. Practiced. This wasn’t their first robbery.

His killing intent pulsed. Stronger. More focused. Making his point clear. Submit or die. The spiritual pressure intensified, pressing down like invisible hands trying to force them to their knees.

"Traveling through our territory requires toll."

His eyes swept over the Shadow Legion. Lingered too long on Mingzhu. On Wei Suyin. On i.

His smile changed. Beca hungry. Possessive. And his killing intent shifted, gained edge. Anticipation mixed with cruel pleasure.

Hunter’s blood went cold.

"Half your supplies should do," Feng said. "Plus..." His gaze fixed on the won and children. Deliberate. Malicious. "Other resources."

Other resources. Not people. Resources. Things to use. Things to drain. Things to consu.

His killing intent focused on them like a spotlight. Predator selecting prey. Making it personal. The spiritual pressure beca suffocating, carrying intent so clear it bypassed language. Mine. Victims. Food.

i went rigid. Her face went pale. She couldn’t understand what she was feeling. Just that the man wanted to hurt her very badly. Wanted to use her for sothing terrible. Gerald the rock couldn’t protect her from this.

Wei Lin stepped in front of her instinctively, his tactical mind understanding threat even if his body trembled. Little Sparrow clutched the rock tighter, as if geological wisdom could sohow save them. Wei Suyin pulled Mingzhu closer, both understanding exactly what "resources" ant.

The corruption in the air. The blood-red qi. The hungry look in Feng’s eyes. The killing intent that felt like teeth against your throat. Everything clicked together with horrible clarity.

These weren’t bandits. These were predators. Monsters wearing human faces. The things that had created the corruption in the forest. The things Han had warned about. The things that had made that clearing.

Blood Path cultivators. Evil incarnate. Standing between them and safety.

Hunter’s Foundation Realm qi flared instinctively. Protective. Defensive. His body reacting before his brain finished processing the threat, his own spiritual pressure rising to et Feng’s crushing intent.

Feng noticed. His smile gained edge. Interest. "Foundation Realm. Impressive for your age." He tilted his head, reassessing. "But you’re outnumbered. Twenty-one versus fifteen of you plus their Foundation Realm protector. Half of you are children and fresh cultivators. The math isn’t favorable."

His killing intent pressed harder. Testing. Probing for weakness. Trying to make Hunter flinch, to break his will before the fight even began.

Han stepped forward. Spear ready. Peak Body Refining aura pressing out like heat. Not killing intent, he didn’t have that yet, just raw presence. Martial skill and battle experience given physical form. "We’re not paying. Move aside."

"Bold." Feng’s qi intensified. Blood-red energy radiating outward like physical force. His killing intent sharpened, beca blade against Han’s throat. Spiritual pressure so concentrated it made the air shimr. "I respect boldness. Unfortunately, it looks better on living people than corpses."

The Iron Wolves spread out. Surrounding them completely. Professional coordination. This was choreographed. Practiced. They’d done this before. Many tis.

Their own killing intent leaked out. Weaker than Feng’s individually. Hunger without his refined cruelty. But still wrong. Still corrupted. Still the spiritual stink of people who’d crossed lines and couldn’t co back. The collective pressure built, twenty-one sources of malicious intent converging on sixteen souls.

Qiu whispered urgently from behind. "Blood Path. All of them. Look at their qi with your spiritual sense. They’re all corrupted."

Hunter looked. Saw it clearly now with his Foundation Realm awareness. Every single Iron Wolf had tainted qi flowing through their ridians. Red. Wrong. Corrupted. Not visible to the naked eye, but to anyone with cultivation? Obvious as blood on snow. Their dantians pulsed with sickly energy, their ridians stained dark.

Those without strong spiritual senses couldn’t see the tainted qi. Just felt the wrongness. The killing intent pressing on them like physical weight. Primal fear that sothing was very, very dangerous. Survival instinct screaming without words.

We’re so fucked. Twenty-one evil cultivators versus fifteen of us plus . Half our people are brand new. This is how we die.

[LUNA] DON’T PANIC (◕‿◕✿)

Too late. Already panicking.

[LUNA] YOU’RE FOUNDATION REALM

[LUNA] THEY’RE MOSTLY BODY REFINING

[LUNA] REALM ADVANTAGE IS SIGNIFICANT ♥

[LUNA] PLUS YOUR SHADOW STEP IS READY

Yeah but there’s twenty-one of them and their killing intent is trying to stop my heart. Also they want to use my people as human batteries. Strength feels less relevant when outnumbered by murder addicts with coordinated tactics.

[LUNA] TECHNICALLY THEY’RE "CULTIVATION RESOURCES"

"Luna, that’s worse."

[LUNA] JUST TRYING TO USE PROPER TERMINOLOGY (◕‿◕✿)

"Read the room!"

"Last chance," Feng said. Voice going cold. Professional. Like discussing a business transaction. His killing intent focused tighter, beca crushing weight bearing down on the entire group. "Supplies and the won. Children especially. You keep your lives. Fresh cauldrons are very valuable. Young qi is purest. We’ll take good care of them."

His intent sharpened on i specifically. Predatory focus. Hungry anticipation. Making his aning crystal clear. The spiritual pressure carried images, sensations. Cages. Rituals. Screaming. All of it directed at a seven-year-old child.

Cauldrons. They called people cauldrons. Human cultivation resources. Things to drain and dispose of.

Hunter looked at i. At Wei Lin. At Little Sparrow. At three kids who’d sworn soul bonds to him and trusted him to keep them safe.

Thought about what Feng ant by "take good care of them." Thought about the corruption in the forest. The clearing that radiated wrongness. The ritual circle stained dark with what used to be inside people. What Blood Path required.

Thought about i in a cage. Being used. Drained. Screaming for help that wouldn’t co. That clearing, but with her blood soaking into the ground. Her qi being ripped out while she died terrified and alone.

Blood Path cultivators couldn’t stop. Han had said it. The corruption made them crave it. Made them need it. Like addiction that got worse with every victim. Feng wasn’t threatening violence. He was promising it. His nature demanded it.

The martial path he’d chosen had already turned him into sothing that couldn’t be reasoned with. Couldn’t be bargained with. Could only be stopped.

Sothing in Hunter’s chest went cold.

Then hot.

Then very, very certain.

"No," he said. Voice flat. Absolute.

Feng’s smile disappeared. His killing intent spiked, surprised and angry. "Excuse ?"

"I said no. We’re not giving you anything. Not supplies. Not people. Nothing." Hunter’s Foundation Realm qi started building. Responding to Feng’s intent with his own presence. Not killing intent yet. Just absolute refusal. "You want them? You go through . Good luck with that."

Feng’s confidence wavered. Just slightly. His killing intent pressed harder, waves of spiritual pressure trying to force submission. Make Hunter back down through overwhelming malice alone.

Hunter’s qi pushed back. Foundation Realm strength versus corrupted intent. His ridians burned with the effort. His dantian felt like ice. But he didn’t move. Didn’t flinch. Didn’t look away.

Not today. Not these people. Not on his watch.

Then Feng’s own qi surged. Blood-red aura exploding outward like flas. His killing intent beca tsunami, overwhelming force ant to crush resistance. "Big words. Let’s see if you can back them up."

His eyes locked on i again. Deliberate. Provocative. His intent focusing like laser, spiritual pressure carrying detailed promises of what he’d do. Making sure Hunter understood exactly what he planned. "Especially that one. Seven-year-old cauldron with pure qi. Untainted by the world. Worth more than everything else combined."

His smile returned. Vicious. Cruel. His killing intent carried images now. Promises. Threats. All directed at a child. Cages and rituals and slow death. Mine. Food. Weeks of screaming.

"I’ll drain her personally. Slowly. Make it last weeks."

The words hit Hunter like physical blows.

But they also did sothing else.

They removed all doubt. All hesitation. All questions about whether this was justified.

Feng had just declared war on a seven-year-old.

Fatal mistake.

Sothing in Hunter’s chest snapped. Not broke. Crystallized. Hardened into absolute certainty.

His Foundation Realm qi exploded outward.

Not controlled. Not refined. Pure protective fury given physical form. His ridians flooded with power, channels burning as qi surged through them faster than technique allowed. His dantian erupted, spiritual energy crashing outward in waves. Spiritual pressure crashing against the Iron Wolves like a tsunami of rage.

The air shook. The ground trembled beneath their feet. Several weaker Iron Wolves stumbled backward, their own cultivation bases recoiling from the overwhelming force. A few dropped to their knees, unable to maintain footing under the pressure. Even Feng’s eyes widened, his confident smirk faltering.

This wasn’t just cultivation base flexing power. This was rage. Absolute. Uncompromising. Foundation Realm strength powered by single-minded determination and protective fury that transcended technique.

Sothing else ca with it. Hunter felt it building in his chest. Cold. Sharp. Certain. An intent so focused it beca physical pressure pressing outward.

Kill them. Protect the children. End the threat. Absolute. Final.

His first real killing intent. Raw. Uncontrolled. Manifesting from pure emotion and absolute conviction. The spiritual breakthrough that ca from crossing a threshold, from committing fully to lethal force without hesitation or doubt.

In wuxia tradition, killing intent manifested when a cultivator truly understood death. Not as concept. As reality they were willing to inflict. The mont mind, body, and spirit aligned toward single lethal purpose.

Hunter had just crossed that line.

The air around him went cold. Actually cold, temperature dropping as his intent crystallized. His spiritual sense scread outward, no longer passive observation but active targeting. Searching for threats. Finding weak points. Marking kill zones. His body knew what his mind was still catching up to.

These people were going to die.

Not might die. Would die. Absolute certainty transcending hope or fear.

He didn’t know how he knew. Just knew. The sa way you know fire burns or water flows. Simple fact carved into reality. Truth waiting to manifest.

His killing intent crystallized that certainty. Gave it weight. Made it real. Spiritual pressure carrying unshakable conviction that made even corrupted Blood Path cultivators hesitate.

The Iron Wolves felt it. Several more backed up, their own corrupted killing intent wavering like candle flas in wind. eting sothing that matched their hunger with absolute conviction. Their practiced cruelty versus his protective fury. Predators suddenly uncertain they’d correctly identified prey.

[LUNA] YOUR KILLING INTENT IS MANIFESTING (◕‿◕✿)

[LUNA] FIRST TI BREAKTHROUGH

[LUNA] VERY IMPRESSIVE FOR FOUNDATION REALM

[LUNA] ALSO SLIGHTLY TERRIFYING ♥

[LUNA] EMOTIONAL TRIGGER: PROTECTIVE FURY

[LUNA] QUALITY: RAW BUT PURE

[LUNA] TRY NOT TO EXPLODE YOUR RIDIANS

Hunter barely heard her. His focus had narrowed to Feng. To the threat. To the thing standing between him and keeping his people safe. Everything else faded. Just predator and prey. And he’d just decided which role he’d play.

"You just made a terminal error in judgnt," Hunter said. Voice barely controlled. Each word clipped. Cold. His killing intent carried the ssage his words couldn’t. Death promise. Absolute commitnt. No negotiation. No rcy. Just certainty. "That was your last chance. Now?"

His hand gripped his sword. Shadow qi swirling around the blade like living darkness responding to his intent. His killing intent focused like blade point, concentrated and sharp. All of it aid at Feng like arrow drawn to full tension.

"Now you all die. Every single one of you. Starting with you."

His intent made it real. Not threat. Prophecy. Simple statent of upcoming fact carved into spiritual pressure that made the air heavy.

Feng’s confidence cracked. Actually cracked. His smile disappeared completely. Eyes widening as he felt the full weight of Foundation Realm fury directed at him with laser focus. Backed by killing intent that said "you’re already dead, the fight is just details."

This wasn’t a scared traveler trying to bluff. This was a predator who’d just been threatened. Who’d just committed fully to violence. And predators didn’t negotiate.

Feng’s own killing intent surged desperately. Blood-red qi exploding outward in response, years of Blood Path cultivation lending it vicious edge. Trying to match the pressure. Trying to reassert dominance through superior experience and technique.

For a mont, their intents clashed. Spiritual pressure grinding against each other like continental plates. The air between them distorting visibly, reality bending under the weight of two wills refusing to yield. The ground cracked beneath them, spider web fractures spreading from the epicenter of their confrontation.

Hunter’s raw fury versus Feng’s refined cruelty. Foundation Realm power versus Peak Body Refining enhanced by demonic arts. Neither giving ground.

Then Feng’s killing intent twisted, changed. Beca sharper, more vicious. Years of Blood Path cultivation giving it cruel sophistication that Hunter’s raw emotion lacked.

"Iron Wolves! Attack! Take them all! Priority on the children! Don’t damage them! Fresh cauldrons fetch better prices whole!"

The ambush sprang. Twenty-one cultivators charging from both sides. The narrow defile becoming a killing ground. No room to maneuver. No retreat possible. Just violence incoming from all directions.

Their collective killing intent crashed forward like breaking wave. Weaker individually than either leader. Overwhelming in coordinated numbers. Hunger and cruelty and corrupted desire to hurt converging on sixteen souls.

Han’s voice cut through the chaos. "DEFENSIVE FORMATION! CENTER PROTECTION!"

The Shadow Legion responded instantly. Training kicking in despite terror. Formation snapping into place like well-oiled chanism. Experienced fighters outside. New cultivators middle. Children at the heart. Protected by bodies and determination and sixteen souls bound together refusing to break.

Hunter didn’t wait for them to reach his people.

Shadow Step activated.

The world blurred. Distance beca suggestion. Space folded. Hunter appeared directly in front of Feng. Sword already moving. Foundation Realm power behind the strike. Overwhelming force. Zero finesse. Just rage and strength and killing intent given lethal purpose.

Feng barely blocked. His arms glowed tallic red, spiritual energy reinforcing flesh. So technique. "Steel Mountain Fist!" Hands turning to literal iron. Struck back at impossible speed, his body techniques honed through decades.

His killing intent sharpened like blade, beca weapon itself. Pressing on Hunter’s qi, trying to shake his focus. Make him hesitate. Create opening for lethal counter.

Hunter twisted. Dodged. His own intent pushed back, refusing to give ground. Not refined. Not controlled. Just absolute refusal to lose. Shadow Step again, burning qi reserves. Behind Feng. Blade aid at spine. Kill shot.

Feng spun too fast, battle instincts saving him. Caught the blade with enhanced fist. tal on tal, sparks flying. His killing intent spiked with victory and confidence. "Blood Yang Art makes faster! Stronger! Years of demonic cultivation make unstoppable! You can’t match my technique!"

"Don’t need technique." Hunter’s Foundation Realm strength pressed down, realm advantage making up for skill gap. Physical force that couldn’t be countered with skill alone. His killing intent crystallized into single purpose. Not thought. Not emotion. Pure certainty burning away everything else. "Just need to not lose."

Their clash was thunder. The ground cracked beneath them from the force. The air scread, spiritual pressure so intense it created visible distortions. Foundation Realm versus Peak Body Refining enhanced by blood arts. Power versus corrupted power. Intent versus intent. Will versus will.

Behind them, the Shadow Legion engaged the Iron Wolves.

The battle had begun.

And soone was definitely dying today.

Maybe Hunter. Maybe all of them.

But Feng first. That was non-negotiable.
