Chapter 1240: Little Teddy

Teddy’s chubby legs and arms were irresistibly plump, his cheeks adorably round with baby fat.

Every step he took was a little wobbly—his tiny bottom wiggling as he struggled to keep balance, his pudgy little feet barely steady on the ground. Clenching his pink, dimpled fists, he fought hard to stay upright.

Just as he was about to tumble, Su Shen stepped forward swiftly and scooped him into his arms.

The little guy babbled cheerfully, kicking his legs with determination, clearly wanting to get down and walk on his own. That stubborn little expression in his eyes was so endearing it made Gu Zi laugh.

She teased him lightly, then turned to Su Shen. “I talked to my sister-in-law on the phone yesterday. She said all three of her stores are running smoothly now, she’s hired more staff, and Mom has so free ti. I’m thinking of sending Teddy back to her for a while, so he can have company with her little one. Once I graduate, I’ll bring him back to raise myself.”

Su Shen nodded approvingly. It was a good plan. This way, Gu Zi would have more ti for herself. “Teddy is a boy after all. He doesn’t need to be coddled or carried everywhere. Once you graduate, we’ll go get him together.”

Gu Zi smiled and said, “I’ll call my sister-in-law later today. When you go for your inspection trip, you can take Teddy with you and leave him there. After I graduate, I’ll find a lighter job so I can take him back.”

The couple reached an understanding. On the day Su Shen set off for his inspection, he took Teddy back to Guangcheng with him. When their three older children returned ho from school and didn’t see their adorable little brother, they imdiately asked Gu Zi.

She explained patiently, “I need to focus on my studies right now, so Dad has taken Teddy to Grandma’s for a while. But it won’t be for long. We’ll bring him back soon.”

Hearing this, the older kids finally relaxed.

anwhile, Teddy, nestled safely in Su Shen’s arms on the train, slowly sensed sothing was amiss. His wide eyes darted around, taking in unfamiliar sights. His small mouth puckered into a pout as he tugged at his father’s collar, pointing and babbling in confusion—why was it just him and Daddy now?

Su Shen held him steady and whispered gently, “It’s just the two of us this ti, son. Mom and your siblings aren’t coming. Daddy’s taking you back to see your hotown, Grandma, and the others. You’ll stay with Grandma for a bit, and once Mom finishes her studies, she’ll co get you. Be a good boy, okay?”

His voice was a little stiff at first, then silence settled between them. Teddy stared at his quiet father, then at the strange surroundings, growing increasingly upset until tears welled up and he began to cry.

He hated to wail loudly, so he curled up quietly in his father’s seat, sobbing softly in his broad, comforting arms until exhaustion overtook him, and he drifted into sleep.

After returning ho with Teddy, Gu Zi threw herself entirely into her studies. Within a week, she finished her thesis. She rarely attended classes these days, but submitting the paper required her to co back to campus at least once.

Her professor, noticing her return, asked to speak with her privately. With a serious tone, the professor said, “Gu Zi, the university is offering a rare opportunity: the diplomat selection exam. Those selected get direct admission into the diplomatic training camp. After one year of training, you can graduate from our university and be placed directly into a classified governnt diplomatic post. Our class has two slots. I want to recomnd you and Zhao Ling.”

Two slots—one given to Gu Zi for her talent, the other to Zhao Ling for her ambition. But the advisor truly valued Gu Zi more; talent was far harder to co by than diligence. He hoped she would seriously consider the offer.

Gu Zi’s goal in university had never been to beco a worker drone. She just wanted to experience this era of college life and get a diploma. Without hesitation, she told the professor, “I plan to graduate once I finish my coursework. Please reserve this opportunity for soone who truly needs it.”

With that, she nodded politely and left, not giving her professor a chance to persuade her further. He sighed deeply in regret.

At that mont, Zhao Ling arrived and, upon hearing Gu Zi had declined, chased after her downstairs.

“Gu Zi, why won’t you go to the diplomatic training camp? Do you realize how rare this opportunity is?” she asked, puzzled.

Gu Zi glanced at her coolly. “I have my own plans. Becoming a diplomat isn’t one of them. For , this isn’t an opportunity—it’s a roadblock. I heard you’re going to the camp. Congratulations. But trust , being a diplomat these days isn’t easy.”

Her words ca as a gentle warning, indifferent to whether Zhao Ling would react with anger. Surprisingly, Zhao Ling actually listened.
