Chapter 1165: Help Slaughter A Pig

The Su family soon arrived at the Zhao residence.

The Zhaos were native to the capital, though they had originally lived in another village. A few years ago, for the sake of their two sons and their daily commutes, they sold their forr ho and purchased a new one in Jiangjia Village. It wasn’t part of the developnt where Gu Zi and her family lived—they had bought directly from a local villager instead.

Fortunately, the previous hoowner was a relative, so their relocation wasn’t entirely into foreign territory. They had long taken a liking to this area—it was well-connected, incredibly close to the city center—but had hesitated due to a rather ominous local rumor that cast a pall over the village.

Only after learning recently that the old criminal case tied to the rumor had finally been solved (and the whispers proven baseless), did they make up their minds. Money was promptly exchanged, and the deed signed.

Today, the Zhao family was hosting a grand celebratory pig-slaughter feast. Practically the entire village had been invited, and the Zhao courtyard was bustling. People spilled out past the threshold, and even the entrance gate was flanked by curious onlookers and rry guests.

Despite the crowd, very few were actually capable of helping with the pig slaughter itself. Most of the young n stood stiffly, dressed in pressed Zhongshan suits and polished leather shoes—the uniform of governnt employees. They had a scholarly, almost delicate air about them, looking entirely out of place amidst the rustic business of blood and butchery.

Inside the kitchen, chaos reigned. The Zhao household was short-handed and still hadn’t found anyone capable of dispatching the pig.

With the auspicious slaughter ti fast approaching, Aunt Zhao was practically beside herself, grabbing her two sons in frustration and snapping, “Look at you two—tall, broad-shouldered, and completely useless when it cos to killing a pig! All that education has turned your brains to mush. Your father, an old man, could do this with his eyes closed!”

Her two daughters-in-law, both born and raised in the city, bristled at the scolding.

The elder daughter-in-law raised her eyebrows and retorted, “Mom, my husband is a cultured man. He’s a salaried officer at the power bureau. These hands are for writing reports, not wielding butcher knives!”

The younger daughter-in-law chid in as well, clearly annoyed. “Exactly! And when he was bringing honor to the family, I didn’t hear any complaints from you. Plenty of people envy us for having two civil servants in the family! It’s just a pig, for goodness’ sake. What’s the big deal? Hire one of the villagers—we’ll give a fat red envelope if needed. It’s not like we’re strapped for cash.”

Aunt Zhao looked at the two won, utterly disgusted by their arrogance. She thought them selfish and unbearably pretentious—forever carrying themselves with the air of the city, as if being urbanites sohow elevated them above rural folk. Did they forget that just a few generations ago, even emperors had roots in the fields? To her, this was nothing short of forgetting one’s origins.

She was about to deliver a stern lecture when soone outside called out, “Aunt Zhao! The Su family has arrived! Why isn’t anyone from the host family out to greet them?”

Aunt Zhao’s temper flared even more. There stood her two pampered sons and their delicate wives, milling about as if this were any ordinary afternoon. Not only were they completely useless in the kitchen, but they couldn’t even be bothered to welco guests.

She realized she couldn’t count on any of them and set down her work with a huff before hurrying outside herself.

Thanks to the past rumors, Jiangjia Village had once been lifeless and gloomy. But ever since the Su family had moved in, the entire area seed to have co alive again. The villagers were imnsely grateful to the Sus for bringing a breath of fresh air—and Aunt Zhao, of course, wouldn’t dare slight them.

She greeted them enthusiastically. “Gu Zi, dear girl! You’re here! And pregnant, too! Co, co inside and rest. Is your husband with you?”

Before Gu Zi could even answer, her three children were already being sward by the local kids. The Su children were almost distractingly good-looking, and all the other children wanted to play with them. Even the usually frosty Su Bing was surrounded by eager companions, much to his visible distress.

Gu Zi followed Aunt Zhao toward the inner courtyard, smiling politely. “Thank you for the invitation, Aunt Zhao. When you ca to our house earlier, my husband wasn’t ho. But he returned not long after, so I brought him with . Didn’t you say you were short-handed for the slaughter? Let him help. He’s more than capable.”

Partly, she offered out of neighborly goodwill—everyone should lend a hand at events like this. But truthfully, she also wanted to test her husband.

These past weeks had been full of banquets and fine wines—had he forgotten where he ca from? Could he still wield a butcher knife? She gave him a aningful glance to watch how he’d respond.

Aunt Zhao looked embarrassed but quickly recovered. “Oh, what trouble we’re putting you through. But your timing is just perfect. Su Shen, co with now. Let your wife stay and chat with my two daughters-in-law. They’re all city girls—plenty in common. They won’t be bored.”

Su Shen nodded and followed Aunt Zhao outside.

Just then, they heard Su Li’s voice calling from the courtyard. “Brother! Look! That’s a black earth pig! Last ti, Daddy told that breed is super aggressive!”

Su Bing glanced over and saw a large pig with a coat of pure black bristles. He nodded solemnly. “Looks like it won’t go down easy. But with Dad here, we’re fine. Killing pigs is his specialty.”

At the pigsty, several burly villagers were standing around the pig, visibly at a loss. One of them muttered, “Where on earth did Aunt Zhao get a pig like this? It’s got a nasty temper! If we can’t even hold it down, how are we supposed to kill it?”
