Xibao’s clothes, socks, toys, and other belongings had to be taken with them. They also needed to prepare so supplies for Father Lu to take back. Those that could be seen were bought directly from the military region service store; the ones in the space had to be hidden in the luggage.
“My Nine Rings!” Xibao, hugging his favorite toy, placed it in the package.
Through the Nine Rings, Feng Qingxue realized that Xibao was truly smart. She couldn’t solve the Nine Rings herself, yet Xibao often solved it in no ti, leaving Fubao in tears many tis as he couldn’t do it.
Once, Fubao got so frustrated he almost smashed the Nine Rings. Since then, Xibao didn’t let him play with it anymore.
Worried that Fubao might want to play with it and end up throwing it in frustration, Xibao hid the Nine Rings. Feng Qingxue hadn’t seen it for a long ti and didn’t expect that today he would rember to take it ho.
Zhao Xiaoyun was delighted to learn that he would be traveling with Father Lu and his grandson.

He had intended to pat Zhao Xiaoyun’s shoulder but had to abandon that plan due to the height difference.
Zhao Xiaoyun was tempted, “Sure, thank you, Grandpa Lu!”
He was willing to go; playing for a few more days wouldn’t matter, as he hadn’t specified a return date to his grandparents anyway.
The three of them boarded the mule cart that Guan Cheng had brought to pick them up, all cheerful. “How co you’ve lent out the mule cart? Is the household not busy?”
“No matter how busy we are, we have to co and pick up you and Xibao!” Guan Cheng greeted Zhao Xiaoyun with a warm smile, looking at Xibao whom he hadn’t seen in two months. “As soon as we heard Xibao was coming, everyone got excited. Third Grandpa and Uncle insisted that I drive into the city first thing in the morning. Speaking of which, Dachun caught a few fish from the river the other night, and one of the blackfish was reserved by Auntie; it will be cooked today to welco Xibao and clear the dust from his journey.”
“With such strict scrutiny outside, our brigade is not an idyllic haven. Dachun is quite bold, still daring to take risks. Isn’t he afraid of being reported for taking advantage of his job to occupy collective property?” In reference to Wang Dachun making use of his position for personal gain and appropriating collective property.
Not to ntion the fish in the river, even the water is collective property.
Guan Cheng laughed, “That’s why he set the net in secret at night and went to collect it before dawn. Although our brigade isn’t an idyll, we’re almost there because we all work together as one. You’ve been away this month, and our brigade has gained four more mbers, one after another. They’ve all been arranged to stay in the cowshed, tending to horses and cows every day, cleaning the cowshed. You’ll have company from now on.”
“Ah? What status are they?” Father Lu was startled. “I rember the houses we built were not small. It wouldn’t be a problem to accommodate four more people, let alone ten. Why put them in the cowshed?”
Even though there were no furnishings in the cowshed, the food was still in the cellar!
After Father Lu and Feng Qingxue left ho, Father Lu would open the cellar every ten days or so to take out so grain to help subsidize the lives of the elders, telling them these were their family’s grains stored from earlier years, well sealed and still edible.
