Gu Jiaojiao listened to the man’s clear, cool voice on the other end of the line. It was like music from the heavens, utterly captivating.

Even though he was talking about the tedious process of factory construction, she listened with rapt attention.

Her heart was racing and her face felt a little hot. She wasn’t sure if it was from missing him or from excitent.

In her previous life, she had experienced many things growing up—touching monts and tragic stories alike.

She had thought love was nothing special, sothing she could take or leave.

So loves, once experienced, simply lost their charm...

"Wifey, what do you think? I’ll listen to whatever you say. If you say no, I’ll just..."

The man’s deep, magnetic voice made her ears tingle even through the phone line.

"Okay, whatever you decide is fine. You’ve always been amazing." Gu Jiaojiao hadn’t actually heard what he said at the end.

"You’re the best, Wifey. I was worried you’d be unhappy. Since you said it’s okay, I can rest easy now."

Gu Jiaojiao was speechless.

’Weren’t we just talking about building the factory? What does he an, he can rest easy now?!’

But she was too embarrassed to ask, so she let the topic drop and they chatted about other things.

Which is why, when Gu Jiaojiao found out later, she was almost furious. But she had agreed to it herself, so she couldn’t bla Su Shuochi.

Finally, the two reluctantly hung up the phone.

A dreamless night passed.

The next day, Gu Jiaojiao slept in until she woke up naturally. There were fewer casualties in the war zone, so she just administered silver needles to a few special patients on schedule.

Afterward, she chatted with Mr. Han and a few other patients. Gu Jiaojiao was young, but she was knowledgeable and a great conversationalist.

Everyone loved talking to her, and peals of laughter often echoed from the ward.

The soldiers found ways to improve their als, going out to hunt wild boars, pheasants, and rabbits in their free ti.

During this ti, Geng Haoyi delivered another large truckload of rice. Winter lons, pumpkins, peas, and potatoes were in season.

The kitchen staff learned a few dishes from Gu Jiaojiao, like braised pork ribs with potatoes and savory pork rib rice... all of which were incredibly delicious.

The aroma of the food was so tantalizing that even soone with no appetite would start drooling at the sll, not that there was anyone here with a poor appetite.

"It would be great if the Little Divine Doctor could stay here forever. We’d get to eat so well every day."

"In your dreams. The Little Divine Doctor is already married. She can’t stay here forever."

"Hah! Food aside, even in battle, I’d be the first to charge forward. I wouldn’t even be afraid of getting injured."

"Heh heh... Brother Dazhu, are you hoping to get injured so the Little Divine Doctor can treat you?"

"How did you know that’s what I was thinking? I don’t think I’ve told anyone." Dazhu’s jaw dropped in surprise.

"You haven’t told anyone, but it’s written all over your face! Anyone can see it, okay?"

"Hahaha... There’s no illness the Little Divine Doctor can’t cure."

Hearing everyone praise Gu Jiaojiao so highly, Sheng Shijing sat up a little straighter.

It was as if they were complinting him. His adopted sister made him feel very proud.

Sheng Shijing thought to himself, ’Jiaojiao, it’s not just others who admire you; even your big brother admires you greatly.’

’You’ve been so good to without holding any grudges. From now on, I will protect you with my life.’

Although Sheng Shijing couldn’t return to his unit yet, he could already get his own food and no longer needed soone to wait on him.

His adopted sister was so brilliant. While he was happy, he also felt a little sad. ’Why isn’t Jiaojiao my biological sister?’

He rembered calling ho at noon. His mother had been crying hysterically, saying how pitiful Yueyue was.

During their traditional three-day visit back to her parents’ ho after the wedding, Song Zijin had actually hit Yueyue right in front of their parents.

His parents didn’t know why, and Yueyue wouldn’t say, so his mother was especially worried.

"Big Brother, what’s wrong?" Gu Jiaojiao ca over with a bowl of savory pork rib rice for Sheng Shijing.

Seeing Sheng Shijing remain silent, Gu Jiaojiao added, "Big Brother, co and have so savory pork rib rice. I made it. It’s delicious."

"Thank you, Jiaojiao. You’ll be heading back to Qing City in a few days, right?" Sheng Shijing asked, looking at his adopted sister.

"Is that why you’re upset, Big Brother?"

"Not entirely. After all, the conditions here are harsh, so I want you to go back, even though I’ll miss you."

Gu Jiaojiao gave Sheng Shijing a noncommittal look. She knew he wasn’t telling the whole truth, but ’who doesn’t have a secret or two?’

Gu Jiaojiao had already eaten with Mr. Han and the others, so she sat across from Sheng Shijing and watched him eat.

Sheng Shijing had eaten savory rice before, but never anything this delicious. It had pork ribs, peas, and several other ingredients.

"The soldiers all say the food has gotten so much better since you’ve been here. Even without at, the vegetable dishes are delicious."

"Su Mama used to be a chef for large events in the countryside. She knows how to make everything, so I learned a lot from her."

Of course, Gu Jiaojiao wasn’t going to tell Sheng Shijing the truth. She only told the truth to Su Shuochi.

"Jiaojiao, I just called ho. My mom said Song Zijin hit Yueyue right in front of her."

"He really hit her?" Gu Jiaojiao blurted out in surprise.

"Jiaojiao, do you know sothing?" Sheng Shijing looked at Gu Jiaojiao intently.

Not only did he want to know why, but even his parents had no idea.

Without a second thought, Gu Jiaojiao rattled off Second Brother Gu’s theory, which made Sheng Shijing reel in anger.

"That classless man, Song Zijin! He actually planned to rely on a woman to compete for favor with his elder cousin?"

"He’s always been a classless scumbag. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been so indecisive on his wedding day."

Gu Jiaojiao was putting in a bad word for Song Zijin. If that scumbag hadn’t abandoned the original owner of this body, she wouldn’t have ended up here.

Although coming here wasn’t bad—she had found love and family—it didn’t stop her from hating the scumbag.

"It’s a good thing Grandpa Gu and the others decisively returned to the Imperial City. If they had gotten entangled with Song Zijin, he probably would have shalessly followed them there."

"That’s very possible. I just wonder if Eldest Brother Gu will call Sheng Yueyue."

As Gu Jiaojiao spoke with Sheng Shijing, this possibility occurred to her, strengthening her resolve not to live with the Gu Family.

"Yueyue is a coward. She won’t go to the Imperial City," Sheng Shijing said with certainty.

"She seems pretty bold to . Why would you think she’s a coward?" Gu Jiaojiao really didn’t think Sheng Yueyue was timid.

"Yueyue’s arrogance cos from a sense of entitlent, not courage. She’s a classic case of soone who’s a tyrant at ho but a mouse outside. Look, she doesn’t even dare to step out of the compound gate."

Sheng Shijing said dismissively. He was a good judge of character, which was why he had spoiled her before.

Hearing Sheng Shijing’s words, Gu Jiaojiao’s eyes widened. ’Could it be that in her past life, Sheng Yueyue never left the compound?’

’If that’s true, then it would explain why a reincarnator has such a narrow perspective!’

’She’s only focused on her own little bubble and has no desire to go out and make sothing of herself. It’s such a great ti to do so, yet Sheng Yueyue hasn’t made a single move.’

In the compound, she lacked nothing. She could live a good life without ever leaving.

’No wonder Sheng Yueyue only wavered between Song Zijin and that second son of the He Family. In her past life, she probably never saw the world outside the compound...’
