Chapter 1497: Chapter 1516: Under Surveillance
Gongxi Yunqi took in Nan Fei’s every move without saying a word, his heart feeling as though soone had pricked it with a needle—sharp, stabbing pain surged through him. Nan Fei was too stubborn, too strong-willed. Her eyes were already in a state of partial blindness, yet she refused to let him know.
Gongxi Yunqi sighed softly in his heart and leaned closer to Nan Fei, “What do you want to say?”
“It’s not just David who’s suspicious; the bigger issue is this town. Ever since we arrived, the atmosphere has been strange. Just now, when I was chatting with them, I realized the people here show absolutely no signs of fear or panic.” Nan Fei lowered her voice, her previously crisp and lodious tone now slightly hoarse. Every syllable was like a tune dancing on the edge of his heart, stirring an uncontrollable mixture of joy, excitent, and rapid heartbeats in Gongxi Yunqi.
Her delicate, rosy lips were close to Gongxi Yunqi’s ear, and the warmth of her breath carried a faint sweetness as it subconsciously brushed against the side of his ear—his most sensitive spot.
Gongxi Yunqi’s body trembled involuntarily, his long-lonely heart beating with ever-growing excitent.
“Hmm!” Gongxi Yunqi’s lips curled into a faint smile, reflecting his delight, “What you said makes sense.”
But Nan Fei didn’t notice any of this herself. She simply spoke with a trace of concern, “We’re already close to the Kaka Military Group’s territory. Tonight, the two of us will take turns standing watch. Be sure to stay safe. If anything unexpected happens, the first thing you need to do is protect yourself.”
“You rest. I’ll stand watch,” Gongxi Yunqi said, pulling a piece of bread from his bag and handing it to Nan Fei. “Otherwise, your body won’t hold up, and tomorrow you’ll be too exhausted. Then, I’ll still be the one taking care of you.”
This ti, Nan Fei didn’t insist. She knew her own physical capabilities, and after more than half a month of interactions with the volunteer team mbers, she’d gathered enough understanding. Most were young people who were passionate about charity and had considerable experience.
There were also a few n who hardly spoke and carried an air of “Do not provoke ” in every fiber of their being. From the first ti she t them, they gave her a palpable sense of danger. Over the years, Nan Fei had kept a low profile within the group. Aside from Gongxi Yunqi, she barely spoke to anyone. Her remaining ti was spent imrsed in thought and heightened vigilance.
Nan Fei quietly ate the bread in her hand and then reached up to remove the headphones she had been wearing. Tilting her body slightly, she leaned against the window and listened closely to the outside sounds. Although her eyesight was deteriorating, inexplicably, her hearing had beco astonishingly sharp. She could hear sounds from extrely far distances, and even the faintest noises around her rarely escaped her notice.
However, her heightened hearing ca with significant drawbacks. While it wasn’t as noticeable back ho, here, she often needed to wear headphones to block out the onslaught of noise that otherwise left her overwheld and with splitting headaches.
Gongxi Yunqi’s gaze lingered for a fleeting mont on the headphones hanging around her neck, a subtle worry flickering across his mind—concerned that there might be so issue with Nan Fei’s hearing.
“What’s wrong with your ears?” From his observations, Nan Fei didn’t use headphones for music; they seed to function more as earplugs.
“I can hear a lot of noise…” Nan Fei’s ears twitched, and her face suddenly changed drastically. The rest of her words abruptly halted as she shot Gongxi Yunqi a sharp look. The two exchanged a tacit glance and imdiately heightened their vigilance toward the surroundings.
Just monts ago, Nan Fei had caught a fleeting sound—subtle breathing from beyond the wall. Though faint to the point of near imperceptibility, she was certain she hadn’t made a mistake. If she hadn’t removed her headphones, she might not have caught it.
