Chapter 1457: Chapter 1476: Cooking Together

Nan Fei managed to sweet-talk Fu Xinwu into leaving without feeling the least bit guilty. She went to the local market with Jiang Yang to buy groceries and decided to cook herself. She made green vegetable dumpling noodles, a dish she used to love back ho. She added egg mixture while kneading the dough, making the dumplings both fragrant and flavorful. She rembered how, during her childhood, eggs were a luxury they couldn’t afford. The eggs laid by the family’s hens were saved up and brought to the market in baskets to sell.

Although they now had money, Nan Fei often found herself reminiscing about those tis.

“How’s my cooking?” Nan Fei sat at the head of the dining table, looking at Jiang Yang with a hint of nervousness.

The little guy picked up a dumpling with his chopsticks and ate it in one bite, the heat making him fan his mouth for a long ti before he could speak.

“Delicious! Really delicious.”

“Really?” Hearing the praise, Nan Fei bead and lowered her head to start eating as well. Hmm! It really was good! Though it couldn’t beat Grandma’s cooking, it was still pretty decent. The dumplings had just the right amount of chewiness.

It seems there’s room for improvent next ti.

“Next ti you co, I’ll make hand-pulled noodles for you.” Don’t be fooled; Nan Fei’s cooking skills might not be stellar, but she knew how to make plenty of dishes. After all, her family was poor when she was younger. Every harvest season, her parents had to work in the fields, leaving her and Zhuanzhuan to handle laundry and cooking at ho.

In the beginning, when Zhuanzhuan was still young, the responsibility naturally fell on her, as the eldest sibling, to take care of everything.

Nan Fei’s hand holding her chopsticks paused montarily as she thought of Zhuanzhuan, but she quickly resud eating as if nothing had happened. For the siblings, a simple bowl of dumplings was enough to bring them joy; they didn’t need lavish feasts.

Jiang Yang ended up drinking all the soup in his bowl and wiped his mouth, still savoring it. He said, “Sister, your cooking is even better than the chefs at Beidaihe Sanatorium.”

“Stop flattering . Who doesn’t know that the food at the Beidaihe Sanatorium is specially supplied, and the chefs there are talented enough to cook for state banquets?” She wasn’t naive.

Jiang Yang grinned ingratiatingly. “But in my heart, what you make is the best.”

Nan Fei was amused and deeply appreciated his sentint. She thought her healthy, happy little brother was simply adorable. She couldn’t resist ruffling his hair. Jiang Yang then proactively offered to wash the dishes, and Nan Fei didn’t stop him. Back ho, chores were always done by whoever was around.

“Sister Nan Fei, did you call Mom?” Jiang Yang asked while washing the dishes.

“I called once. What about you?” The last ti, their call had lasted over an hour, and Nan Fei could barely rember what she had talked about with Mom. Whether it was Dad’s attitude or the issues surrounding Zhuanzhuan, everything had always been blows to Mom.

On the phone, the two had chattered endlessly, mostly about comforting each other and urging one another to take care of themselves. Nan Fei didn’t even dare ask if Mom would support her, nor did she dare ask if Mom was angry.

The harm caused by Dad was sothing she could never forgive in her lifeti.

Instead of facing it, it was easier to avoid it altogether—this way, they could spare each other from further hurt.

The thing Nan Fei found solace in was Grandma’s clear stance. Grandma stood firmly behind her, offering her the greatest support and courage. Grandma even encouraged her to do whatever she wanted without worrying about the family.

A faint smile appeared on Nan Fei’s lips. She decided to prepare gifts for the New Year tomorrow. School had already started its winter break, and the New Year was fast approaching. She wouldn’t be going ho this year, but the gifts couldn’t be left out.

An instant of hesitation flashed in Jiang Yang’s eyes. He pretended to ask casually, “So, are you going ho during the holiday break?”
