The sight of that smile made sothing inside Matteo finally loosen after days of worry.

"I know you’re not a kid, but you’ll always be my baby," Matteo said with a soft chuckle, looking directly at him. "So co on, let carry you."

In the living room, Mark and Tony watched the scene unfold.

Seeing the warmth and affection between the couple was enough to ease so of their worries as Matteo carefully carried Adrian up the stairs.

As Matteo climbed the steps, he deliberately gave a gentle, playful swing from side to side, jostling the man on his back. The sudden movent caught Adrian off guard, making him let out another quiet, breathy laugh against Matteo’s shoulder.

"Baby, stop," Adrian murmured, his hands tightening around Matteo’s neck.

Matteo chuckled, a low, teasing sound. "Beg ."

Instead of answering, Adrian suddenly went quiet, resting his chin heavily on Matteo’s shoulder as they reached the landing.

The playful atmosphere softened into a comfortable, peaceful silence that wrapped around them until they stepped back inside their bedroom.

Matteo walked over to the mattress and carefully slid Adrian down, letting him sit gently on the edge of the bed. Adrian settled his posture, his eyes tracking Matteo as the larger man walked over to the nightstand.

Matteo picked up the prescription bottles, poured a fresh glass of water, and walked back over. He dropped onto his knees directly between Adrian’s legs, looking up at him as he poured the pills into Adrian’s open palm.

Adrian took the dication one by one, swallowing them with slow gulps of water. Once the glass was empty, he didn’t hand it back. He just sat there in silence, his gaze locking onto Matteo’s face with a heavy, unreadable intensity.

Sensing the shift in his mood, Matteo reached over and took the empty glass from his hands before setting it on the nightstand.

Then he slid onto the mattress beside him, his expression softening.

"Baby, what’s wrong?"

Adrian turned his head fully to look at him.

For a long, agonizing mont, neither of them spoke.

They simply stared into each other’s eyes, an unspoken weight hanging heavily between them.

Unable to bear the distance that had settled between them, Matteo slowly leaned closer.

He lifted a hand and gently cupped Adrian’s cheek before pressing a soft, lingering kiss to his lips.

At first, Adrian froze, his lips remaining completely still. But Matteo didn’t pull away. He stayed patient, shifting his angle slightly to press soft, lingering kisses against Adrian’s lower lip, coaxing him with a protective tenderness.

Slowly, the tension left Adrian’s shoulders. He let out a soft sigh and finally kissed back, his hands rising to grip Matteo’s shirt as the kiss deepened into sothing desperate and warm.

Suddenly, Adrian broke the contact, his breath hitching as he murmured against Matteo’s lips. "Matteo... I have sothing to say to you."

Matteo’s movents froze instantly.

He slowly pulled back, his own breathing heavy, but his chest suddenly felt tight.

The mont he heard those words, his mind imdiately flashed back to Kevin’s vicious claims about what he and his brother had done.

A cold dread washed over him.

Forcing himself to remain calm, he t Adrian’s eyes and lowered his voice to a whisper.

"Is it that important?"

Adrian nodded slowly, his eyes wide and completely serious. "Yes."

Matteo swallowed the lump in his throat, trying to brace himself for the impact. "Okay, love. I’m listening."

Adrian took a shallow breath, his fingers twisting in his lap. "When Kevin and Kelly kidnapped ... the thing is..."

Before he could finish the sentence, panic surged through Matteo like ice water. Just as the suspense beca suffocating, the loud, sharp ringing of Matteo’s phone shattered the silence of the room.

He glanced at his phone, it was Mark calling.

Seizing the interruption like a lifeline, Matteo quickly spoke up, his voice a bit too rushed.

"Oh, that’s right... Mark and your friends are still downstairs waiting. Can we go back to them first? We can talk right after they leave."

Adrian looked at him, a flicker of exhaustion crossing his face. "I’m not going back downstairs. I feel sleepy."

"Just for a few minutes, baby," Matteo coaxed gently, reaching out to stroke his arm. "Co downstairs and say goodbye to everyone. As soon as they leave, I’ll bring you straight back up here so you can get so proper rest."

Adrian hesitated for a second before giving a tired sigh. "Alright."

They both walked back downstairs together.

The mont they entered the living room, Mark stood up from the sofa, imdiately noticing the exhaustion on Adrian’s face.

"We were actually just about to head out," Mark said, stepping forward.

He gave Adrian a reassuring nod.

"Get so rest, Adrian. Wishing you a quick recovery."

Charles and Frank stepped forward next.

Each of them gave Adrian a careful hug, making sure not to hold him too tightly. "Take care of yourself, okay?" Charles said softly. "And call us whenever you feel up to it." Frank nodded in agreent, offering Adrian a warm, encouraging smile.

Tony stepped up last, a smirk playing on his lips as he tried to lighten the mood. He gave Adrian a playful nudge.

"Get better soon, friend."

Adrian didn’t say a word. Instead, he slowly rolled his eyes in exaggerated annoyance.

Tony imdiately burst out laughing.

"I knew it," he said, completely unfazed. "That stubborn attitude is still in there sowhere." He pointed a finger at Adrian.

"Get well soon. I want to see the old Adrian back."

Adrian looked at his friends and gave them a small nod.

"Thanks, guys," he murmured.

After a brief pause, he looked at Mark and Tony. "Thank you too."

Once the goodbyes were done, Matteo turned back to Adrian, resting a protective hand against his back.

"Babe, I need to have a quick word with Mark and Tony outside. It won’t take long."

"Alright. I’ll go upstairs first," Adrian replied softly.

"Alright, babe." Matteo watched him turn and head back up the staircase before turning his attention to his brother and Tony.

But a few quick words easily turned into a serious discussion.

Before Matteo even realized it, more than thirty minutes had slipped by.

Snapping out of the conversation, he quickly cut Mark off.

"Look, you guys should get going," he said, glancing back toward the house. "If there’s anything else we need to discuss, I’ll call you later."

Mark nodded, understanding the urgency. "Got it. Take care of him." With that, the group stepped out to their vehicles, and the convoy finally drove away.

The mont their car disappeared from view, Matteo turned and hurried back into the house, his chest tight with anxiety over the conversation they had left unfinished.

He took the stairs two at a ti before quietly pushing open the bedroom door, bracing himself for whatever Adrian was about to tell him.

But the mont he stepped inside, Adrian was already fast asleep, curled tightly on his side beneath the thick duvet.

Matteo’s shoulders slumped in relief. He walked forward with slow, silent steps and sat on the edge of the mattress beside him. He pulled the blanket up, carefully tucking Adrian in to keep out the chill of the air conditioning.

For a long mont, he studied Adrian’s sleeping face. The dark bruises from a week ago were finally fading, allowing his skin to regain its natural, soft glow.

Matteo reached out, his thumb hovering just above Adrian’s cheek, afraid to wake him. He stared down at the man he loved more than life itself, his heart aching with a desperate need to protect him from the harshness of the world, and from the truth itself.

"What if we never talk about it...?" Matteo whispered into the quiet room, his voice trembling with a fragile hope.

He leaned down slightly, his eyes fixed on Adrian’s sleeping face. "Baby..." he murmured. "What if we just leave it in the past?"

Adrian slept far longer than Matteo expected.

Matteo waited up...
