The voice of Kaidos’s master fell silent before he continued speaking; there was a surprise he tried to hide. "To think you can make split-second decisions, impressive. But what’s this curious power of yours? Aren’t you a Necromancer?"
I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. My gaze was fixed on Litha hanging mid-air, covered by red blood roots that bound her body. And my ears kept hearing Temur’s groan.
"No answer? Well, it hardly matters. How are you going to defeat with this shield now?" he said with amusent.
I couldn’t find the answer, especially when all my power was drained and I had even used up my monsters’ own. There was truly only one thing left. "Co out, war chief."
Darkness boiled in front of , and the war chief goblin ca out. It still hadn’t fully recovered from its last fight, but it was standing. I brought out a sword from my ring and gave it to it. "Kill that Necromancer but don’t touch Litha."
The goblin with only one hand turned then sped forward, its bulk moving so fast it looked like it was going to collide with Litha, but at the last mont, it did a crouching roll and went up, swinging upward on the outside and into the portal.
Kaidos boss laughed as he took care of the goblin. It was fast, but that was what I was waiting for. The goblin was a sacrifice as it got the master’s attention away from us briefly.
I huffed, ran towards Litha, and tried to cut the roots that surrounded her with a dagger. But instead, the roots tightened around her and a branch snapped out and slapped the dagger from my hand before it coiled around my hand.
"Oh. A distraction, I like it, but the goblin isn’t much of a distraction for ," the portal shuddered, and the master finally ca out. A red robe with a red mask, only the glint of fiery eyes shone through. He was dragging the goblin by its neck. "Next ti, you should send sothing that will threaten ."
I glared. Frankly, that was the only thing I could do. My holy magic was depleted, the sa as the power from my monsters. And my physical strength wasn’t anything to write ho about either. So I glared and struggled with the roots that bound .
The man chuckled and then dropped the body of the goblin; the connection from it to had been cut by the worms that burrowed into its flesh. "You are getting more curious, Torvan. To think you’ll be able to take over my magic. I can’t wait to cut you open and see what you are made of."
I stood struggling with the roots. The realization hit with full force; we were utterly screwed. I looked towards the place of the throne, but all I could see was darkness and a flash of fire. I could only hope that the Gold returned quickly.
The only thing I could do now was keep him occupied. I took a deep breath and shoved my anger away. "I’ve never seen a Necromancer before but I must say, you are a disgrace to our profession! Our art!"
I was grimacing inside, what the fuck was I talking about? Profession? Art? Anything to keep him occupied but that?
As expected, it didn’t work. All it did was put the man on guard. He chuckled. "I see. So you’re waiting for help? Possibly from your friend out there? You disappoint , Torvan," the red mask man shook his head. "I thought you’d be a worthy competition. I don’t get to fight our kinds often....!!!"
The portal pillar shuddered, ripping like a stormy sea. The man turned and understood. "Bastards!" He began to run inside. "They have collapsed it from outside!"
All I could do was watch in surprise at the retreating figure, but then my brain kicked in, and I plunged myself at Litha. I clawed at the roots with my hand, but all I managed to do was make the one binding hold on tighter.
Kaidos’s master jumped into the fading portal, then he gestured, and the roots dragged Litha in. I panicked and let go imdiately, but the root connection to her pulled along. I dug my feet into the ground as I watched Litha fade into the portal.
Suddenly the roots pulling stopped, and I fell backward, my eyes on the portal that now looked like the last light of the day. The master’s voice ca out of it, filled with fury and glee. "If you value yourself, Torvan, you will give yourself up to . et at....."
The portal winked out.
I stared and stared at the space. My head was filled with nothing, only silence. I turned blindly towards a noise; it was Temur reaching out with hands outstretched towards where Litha was.
I tried to get to my feet, to go to Temur and help my friend. At least I should be able to save a friend, but my eyes rolled, and I was suddenly looking at the ceiling above. Darkness followed.
*****
When I woke, it was to silence. The regular type of silence where everything was normal, and any minute now, I would yawn and rub my eyes while trying to retain the last bit of my dream.
Then I would drag myself out and demand what Temur was cooking for us that morning and wait for Litha’s scolding. But sothing bugged , and then the mories slamd into , and I jumped up.
My vision sward, and my weak legs gave under ; I held tightly to the bed and groaned as all the muscles in my body ached. "Wh...whre..." I cleared my dried throat as I looked around. "Where am I?"
The room was small with a single posh bed and chair. The wall looked like tal, and it was decorated with different art. It looked familiar, and when the curtain suddenly flapped open, I knew why.
"So you are awake."
