Avery had no idea how important the papers she had torn on that fateful day in Archie’s office were, until a week later when she got a text from Emma on her way back from work.
[You back? Join us at Leeds. There’s soone we have to comfort.]
’Roger that,’ she texted back imdiately.
’Now who seeks therapy from the McCallum siblings?’ she mused, a twinkle in her eyes as she steered her car to a different lane. Since Emma was the one who ssaged her, it ant she wasn’t the one who needed comforting. Maybe Arthur then.
But why would the idle prince need comfort? Did he get his heart broken by those girls he surrounded himself with?
"It’s his fault for befriending soone as frivolous as Archie Donovan; where else would he have gotten the courage to have as many female friends as he does now?" she murmured beneath her breath, rolling her eyes imdiately the thought of Archie popped in her mind.
As she maneuvered her way through the traffic, she grew bored and picked up her phone. She clicked on the call app and pressed down on speed dial 1, waiting patiently as the phone rang on.
The call disconnected after a minute and Avery had to dial the sa number two more tis before it finally connected.
"Hey," a gruff, sickingly sweet voice ca from the other side of the line.
"Hi! Were you busy? I called thrice," she pointed out, a small smile playing at the sides of her mouth. "And you picked up late even on the third ring."
A short silence, followed by the sound of a door slamming before the person replied, "Just got off work. Sorry about that."
"It’s alright," Avery dismissed the matter imdiately before asking, "How was your day?"
"It wasn’t in any way good. How about yours? And where are you?"
Her brows rose in curiosity at the sa ti her eyes
"My day was interesting. I had a eting with grandfather and the other board mbers and guess what?" she asked.
There was a hint of delight in the voice when he guessed, "You will be voted in as president in a few months?"
"Of course not, Brian!" Avery exclaid, bursting out in laughter. "I have only worked there for two years. Superior shares or not; there’s no way those directors are letting a 20 year old preside over the company."
"But you are skilled enough to do that."
Avery nodded even with the knowledge that the person on the other side of the line couldn’t see her, "I shouldn’t blow my trumpet but then...you are right," she chuckled.
A raspy chuckle echoed from the other side, accompanied by deep breaths, "I am always right, Love. Plus the fact that the board mbers allowed you to join the company without graduating or even attending business school shows just how much of a genius they think you are. Look at Roberts, he graduated from business school two years ago but hasn’t been approved to join the company yet, right?"
The smile on Avery’s face slowly disappeared.
"Right," she replied,"But how did you know that? Did Roberts..."
"No!" the refusal was rather abrupt, but Avery didn’t press the matter much more than she should.
"Really?" she asked, her voice laced with skepticism.
"Really. You know I don’t relate with your cousins that much," ca the reply. A short pause before he added, "I can’t really rember how I got to know. You probably told ."
"I didn’t," Avery contradicted.
"For real? Then maybe I got it as an intel from one of our employees. As per rival companies, you know?" he laughed, "They want to know each and every single thing about your group, secret or not."
"I understand," Avery stated, biting down on her lower lip. It was the sa for her; getting incriminating news about the rival company and deciding what to do with it in a way that would affect their rival’s stock prices negatively.
"Of course, you will. You also got news of my brother’s accident before I did. I have yet to thank you for informing early enough before the press got wind of it," he said.
Avery shrugged, the excitent she had felt earlier starting to crawl back into her voice. "You don’t have to. There are also instances you have saved and the group. I can’t thank you enough for that, can I?" Calling Brian and informing him of his brother’s accident the mont she was inford had helped in manipulating the press release and their stock prices at the end of the day.
"Let’s leave that at it. I guessed wrong, so what interesting stuff happened at the eting?" Brian asked.
"What’s actually interesting is that ’nothing interesting’ happened. With the way Assistant Riley exposed our relationship at work last week, I expected to get my ears told off."
"But no one ntioned it? Not even your grandfather?" Brian’s voice sounded surprised.
Avery laughed, imagining him sitting up in shock at the mont.
"Absolutely no one, I tell you. Neither did they ntion my mistake in the Anderson business deal Walker Group hijacked," she gushed. "Isn’t that luck?"
"I will say it is," Brian supported. "That only ans even the heavens bless our relationship. What more could keep us apart?"
"Absolutely nothing!" Avery replied, "Now back to you, what made your day so bad?"
Brian released a long and loud sigh before replying, "It’s the Anderson deal. The one you, well..."
"The one I missed an important clause on and you got?" Avery completed.
Brian humd in confirmation, "Yeah, that one."
"What about it?"
"Uh well... I’m having a problem with—"
Avery interrupted him. "Was the problem you encountered on the deal the only reason your day didn’t go well?" she questioned.
"Yeah, actually," Brian replied. His voice assuming a playful lilt, he continued, "I’m sure you can help though...but will you?"
"No, I won’t." Avery deadpanned, her voice reflecting utmost seriousness.
