"I told you," he enunciated, "There will be no point taking revenge when you don’t enjoy it every step of the way. It would be a total waste of ti."
Avery disagreed imdiately, "I don’t think so. The actual waste of ti will be when I take my ti bringing them down one after the other, and end up forgetting what made start this in the first place."
"So what’s your new plan?"
"Take them down in one go," she replied, her tone belying a hint of firmness. "I don’t need to enjoy what I do; as long as they end up getting destroyed in the long run. I also decided to visit them...Emma and the others, once every week, since it looks like I’ll be needing reminders to put on track and help keep my number one goal in mind. What do you think?"
"Doesn’t matter." Archie shrugged, "Just know you can co to ..." there was long pause, "...when the pain gets unbearable."
"Hmm." A splutter of coughs accompanied Avery’s short hum, as she hurriedly racked her brain for any pending discussion she could broach as a change of topic. Her eyes caught the sparkling anklet around her legs, and she let out a relieved sigh.
"What’s that though? What were you doing to my leg while I was still asleep...?" she trailed off, waiting for him to take her cue.
Which he did almost imdiately, "You are not blind, are you? What does that look like?"
Avery didn’t reply, believing the jab he threw at her was well deserved. She knew what he did to her ankles perfectly well yet she still asked. Wasn’t that inviting insults to herself?
"Get dressed and co on out. I don’t suppose you want to skip classes today, though I’m in high support of your decision if you decide to that." His voice snapped her out of her thoughts, and he waited to see her nod before adding, "Kept your phone on the desk. There’s an awful amount of ssages you have to check out, I think."
The mont his back was turned to her, Avery imdiately climbed out of bed, not waiting until he was out the door before dashing straight into her bathroom.
Minutes later, she was walking down the stairs with her eyes glued to the screen of her phone, her face expressionless as she read the pending ssages she had. There was one from Alice to apologize for leaving so early.
Alice: I spotted so pretty persistent fans coming into the cafe and I had no choice but to escape before they could find . So sorry, Ava.
One from Charlotte asking where she was and if she left the cetery already.
Charlotte: Did you leave yet? Is everything okay at ho? Was it an ergency? Call when you see this.
There were a few more ssages from the new found friends from school asking when she would be free to join them for tea, lunch, or dinner. And finally, countless notifications of her account being tagged to posts that insulted her role as Sloane McCallum while throwing jibes at Avery McCallum.
’No face could pass as a better cast for a villain!’
’Why don’t we just crown the actress as an official villain so we can bash her whenever we want without fear of getting sued? She’d be a villain anyway.’
’Ouch, this pictures just gave inspiration to co up with an insult no one ever addressed Avery McCallum as. A slut! She had all the titles—murderer, traitor, ingrate, thief— except that...imagine.’
Her face devoid of any form of emotions, Avery continued reading until she got to the tenth post before deciding to stop. She had no ti to waste. As she journeyed absentmindedly to the kitchen, the only ti a flicker of emotion crossed her face was when she saw the number of missed calls she had from Jodi.
"I’ll be seeing her later," she whispered, switching off the phone to push into the back of the baggy, denim trousers she was wearing.
"Nancy is not here yet? Or did she leave already?" she asked, her eyes sweeping around the empty kitchen.
"Told her to take the day off."
Avery whipped around to see where the reply had co from.
Archie; lounging on one of the couches with a mug in one hand and a book in another. Was the man jobless?
"Oh..." she said out loud, "I was thinking she’d make the calming tea for . Guess I have to go with coffee then."
Archie glanced up from his book.
"What tea?"
"There’s this tea," Avery replied, as she walked over to the coffee making machine. "She’s been making it for since the morning you left. It helped calm down and I loved it, so it turned into a daily routine stuff."
She gulped down the large cup of coffee as soon as it was done brewing and headed out of the kitchen.
"I’ll be back late."
"Dylan will be there to pick you up," Archie stated.
"I won’t be needing the car," Avery refused. She pondered for a few seconds before adding, "I’ll be visiting a church. Soone I know is a frequent goer."
"Kathy McCallum?" Archie guessed instantly, knowing even before the shock crossed her face that he was right. After all, he was currently making his own research on the wretched family.
Avery wanted to make this fast and conclude her ga as soon as possible, but he had gone through that once before, and it didn’t end well. Hers wouldn’t end well too. If it was worth taking revenge over; then she had to enjoy even the slightest of the plots she made every step of the way.
Now that she was refusing to, due to reasons he totally understood and wouldn’t bla her for, it was left to him to fill up that gap.
"How did you know that?" Avery raised her brows in curiosity.
He shrugged, "I guessed? You said you would be taking on all of them at once so it was pretty easy to who your next prey is. The second easiest to destroy, Kathy McCallum."
’It’s that obvious?’ Avery wondered. However, she refused to dwell on the matter for long before taking her mind off it completely. "See you...soon."
She trudged towards the elevator and pressed on the button, waiting patiently for the doors to open when a sudden suffocating presence descended upon her. Like she was being cornered into an enclosed space with—
She turned abruptly on her heels, a glimr of apprehension crossing her face when she saw what had caused it. Archie was standing right behind her, a very displeased—almost annoyed— expression sitting on his face.
"Is anything wro—?"
"Did you gain anything from what happened last night?" he asked, interrupting her.
"Uh?!" Avery spluttered.
What happened last night? She knew that. But why was he asking what she gained from it? A mind-blowing orgasm... She couldn’t say that, right?
"What did last night teach you, Ava?" Archie rephrased his question, when her red face stared back at him in total embarrassnt.
Avery blinked at the new set of words which directly projected a new aning but ended up giving her the sa answer. What did last night teach her?
That Archie could make her cry, in the most pleasurable way possible, when the whiskey with the highest alcohol by volu content in the cellar couldn’t even do the job?
’No, Avery. You are getting this all wrong,’ she chastised herself inwardly, bracing herself as she looked up. Her gaze boring into his eyes, helped her to spot a hint of sothing confusing in there.
It was a familiar look. She had seen it sowhere. Or rather, she had seen it in her own eyes once when she looked in the mirror. Not at herself, but at Brian...then.
A mirthless chuckle escaped her lips. This was impossible.
"Hey, you aren’t trying to tell you like ... right?" she asked, her voice filled with anxiety.
"That doesn’t fit," Archie deadpanned.
"Right?" She forced a laughter which slowly disappeared from her eyes, when she saw his eyes narrowed. He seed serious with this. But then, didn’t she just guess and he refused it?
"No, he didn’t," she subconsciously muttered beneath her breath. He didn’t refuse her guess that he liked her. He just said ’that doesn’t fit’. Fit in what?
"Uhm," she made another attempt, "If ’like’ doesn’t fit, y—you love then?"
