Chapter 1457: Chapter 842: Peace at Last (End)

Southern Continent, Baiyun County.

A spacious courtyard stands in East City.

It’s heard that war has sparked again recently, but it hasn’t yet reached this peaceful county.

In the early morning, under the large locust tree outside the courtyard, a tutor is conducting a morning reading session with a group of children. To alleviate their fatigue, the old scholar pulls out a leisure book from his sleeve.

He picks up from where he left off yesterday, reading with rhythm: “Thus, after practicing for 3,200 kalpas, one attains the Golden Immortal, known as the Pure and Natural Awakened King Buddha, guiding the Bodhisattvas to suddenly realize the orthodox Mahayana, gradually entering the marvelous path of emptiness. After yet another billion kalpas, one finally attains the Jade Emperor.”

“Teacher, how long is a kalpa?”

The children imdiately beco interested, gathering around bustlingly.

“A kalpa is 129,600 years.” The old scholar, feigning profundity, closes his eyes.

“129,600… billion kalpas…”

The children, scratching their fingers, find their clear eyes starting to blur, mumbling, “Teacher, how many years is that?”

“This, this.” The old scholar pauses, looking troubled. With no abacus nearby, how could he possibly calculate that?

“About twenty years or so.”

At that mont, a disheveled young man strides out from the courtyard, yawning and rubbing his eyes.

“Nonsense!”

The old scholar, blowing his mustache and widening his eyes, turns around. Upon seeing the newcor, his expression changes slightly, sowhat sheepishly saying, “Oh, it’s Officer Shen.”

The reputation of this person in Baiyun County is unparalleled. He spends all day doing nothing, indulging only in eating, drinking, and playing, with all expenses for this spacious courtyard and daily living funded by Miss Lin’s careful managent of her silk business.

He freeloads to such a degree without feeling ashad, hard to find another like him under the heavens.

“Brother Shen must not be fully awake. Even Little Doudou knows that’s wrong.”

The children burst into laughter with tears of joy and then swarm towards the young man, pulling his already ssy clothes even further in search of a few candies.

“Shoo, shoo, I didn’t bring any today, maybe next ti.” Shen Yi waves dismissively.

Yet the children are not afraid in the slightest. Everyone knows that Brother Shen never truly gets angry, being a very kind man, unlike Zhang the Butcher from West Street, with a fierce face and the stench of blood.

They scatter back to gather by the tutor.

“Don’t mind him, lest you learn mischief from him. You ought to beco people of accomplishnt.” The old scholar lowers his voice, secretly speaking ill of the youth.

With any other affluent family, he’d dare not offend, but Officer Shen’s indifferent nature suggests that he probably wouldn’t take issue with him.

“Teacher, since there’s a Jade Emperor, are there really Immortals?” The children excitedly sit around.

“Indeed…”

The old scholar raises the “High Supre Jade Emperor’s Original Action Collection Sutra” high with a smile: “It’s written in the book, it can’t be false.”

Though truth be told, not even counting back three generations of his ancestors had ever encountered the so-called Immortal Buddhas. Still, it’s just to entertain the children, exaggerating is an old-age amusent.

“Yes, there are.”

Shen Yi, who has walked farther away, turns back and seriously says, “Ask the tutor to find one for you to see.”

“You!”

The old scholar blushes, having already foreseen what would happen.

Sure enough, the next mont, his thin body is engulfed by the children, clinging to his hands and waist, the clamor nearly making his head explode.

Before being completely overwheld, in the corner of his eye, he glimpses the youth tidily arranging his clothes, sauntering off proudly.

Who says Officer Shen is indifferent? Clearly, he rembers every slight!

Reaching the long street.

Shen Yi, familiar with the route, arrives at the pancake stand.

“Sir, your taste is truly discerning.”

The young vendor, with a towel wrapped around his head, is busy to the point of distraction, not looking up as he says, “Our family’s pancakes, counting back several dozen generations, were personally tasted and praised by the Lord Jade Emperor himself!”

“Has your family really been around for several dozen generations?” Shen Yi lazily props up the stall.

“Honest trade, honest trade!”

The vendor instinctively agrees, then realizing his custor’s identity, quickly raises his head with an awkward smile: “Oh, it’s Officer Shen. Just trying to earn a living, please understand… still two servings today?”

This is a major patron.

Officer Shen and Miss Lin manage such a large silk business and are quite wealthy, yet both are particularly fond of his pancakes, even sending so off when hosting guests.

“Two servings.”

Shen Yi nods, noticing the vendor’s expression turning peculiar as he winks at him frantically.

He casually glances at the street.

There, he sees a cool girl with a sword coming, her hair smooth and soft, dressed in an ethereal robe, followed by two constables making faces.

Shen Yi rolls his eyes: “Three servings.”

“Got it, hehe!” The vendor looks as if he anticipated this. Everyone in Baiyun County knows how popular Officer Shen is, even Jian the Officer, valiant and highly skilled, is smitten at first sight.

But it’s like casting flirtatious glances at a blind man, a true heart cannot lt this block of old ice.

“Several sect masters said they wanted to co see you.”

Jiang Qiulan approaches slowly, accepting the pancake Shen Yi casually tosses over, taking small bites.

“Not eting them.” Shen Yi, chewing the pancake, murmurs unclearly.

He could forgive Ji Jingxi, but Ye Jiu is a sword enthusiast, even without Immortal Law, he’s constantly pondering swordsmanship, who would want to play with that piece of broken iron?

“The old man Chen Qiankun and Senior Zhu Jue also sent ssages.” Jiang Qiulan purses her lips.

“That’s acceptable.”

Shen Yi stuffs the remaining pancake into his mouth, having not seen them for a while, he does miss them a bit: “That little girl tells you to co for dinner after you finish work, she cooked so lamb shanks.”

“Alright.”

Jiang Qiulan smiles, having personally witnessed how her junior sister used pot after pot of lamb soup to transform her title from Lin Baiwei to Little Girl.

Maybe she should learn these things too?

Otherwise, she wouldn’t just fail to keep up with Bai Wei, but would be outpaced by Senior Ye Lan, who’s had their eye on Baiyun County for a long ti.

“Alright, I need to catch so more sleep.”

Shen Yi stretches, feeling no guilt in wasting ti; after all, the previous struggles were precisely for the sake of enjoying life.

Jiang Qiulan, eyes as bright as silk, watches him depart.

On this path, everyone Shen Yi t strives forward, hoping to match the increasing peak height of this mountain.

But he tells everyone through his actions.

No need to chase.

He will himself turn from mountain into sky, letting all see him at a glance, always by their side.

“Let’s go.”

Jiang Qiulan turns and leaves the long street, heading towards the riverside.

“Miss Jiang, these two monks are here inciting discord!”

“Ha Chi Ha Chi!”

Seeing the two monks on the verge of swelling up in the water, Jiang Qiulan approaches them, amused, gives a slight frown, and commands her n to release them.

She disperses the gathering crowd, calmly saying: “These two monks are spreading misleading words and causing trouble!”

“You!”

The two monks, Zhi Kong and the other one, who had been soaking wet and tied up with hemp rope, exclaid in dismay. At this mont, they could not even untie the cords on their bodies.

“They ca chasing after .”

The Golden Cicada, wearing a pained expression, erged from a hidden spot: “That old thing, he hatched another plot against . We argued several tis… then he kept finding faults with , saying sothing about . How I debated with him… how he was always picking on .”

“Address as Monk Zhi Kong, it sounds more pleasing.” The Golden Cicada spread his hands: “Officer Shen, he…”

“He went back to catch so more sleep.”

With just one sentence, Jiang Qiulan blocked Monk Zhi Kong’s request.

Jiang Qiulan lightly nodded.

Venerable Golden Immortal confird: “Still call Monk Zhi Kong, it sounds better.” Golden Cicada said, shrugging: “Officer Shen, he…”

“Just sleeping so more.”

With just one sentence, Jiang Qiulan dismissed Golden Cicada’s request.

Grudgingly managing a smile: “I understand.”

Monk Zhi Kong, full of bitterness, stepped forward from a hidden spot: “That old fellow hatched another plan against again, I disputed with him several tis… now he is always finding my faults, and saying how I argue with him again… blaming faults on over and over again… he always bears grudges by taking revenge, isn’t he?”
