Ren Ye pursed his lips tightly and hesitated, "I think if I were to sing, the whole town would have to wake up and cry."
Ren Ye thought as he stared at Ren Jia's anticipating eyes. He heaved a helpless sigh and coughed awkwardly, "Promise you will sleep."
"I promise," Ren Jia said quickly as soon as her Papa agreed to her request. She was overly excited to listen to her Papa sing for the first ti.
She had never heard him sing before and therefore, wanted to be the first to experience it.
On the other side of the phone, Ren Ye nervously looked at the phone. He was checking to see if the call was 'accidentally' turned off yet. He felt sowhat nervous singing, especially with a professional singer who is sleeping nearby the little girl.
"Dammit!"
Ren Ye cussed loudly inside his heart as his hand trembled holding the phone, "Close your eyes."
Ren Ye ordered.
Ren Jia nodded her head and closed her tiny eyes, waiting to hear him sing.
"…"
"I have never thought I would be forced to a corner by my own daughter," Ren Ye winced inwardly, "I should have hung up the call as soon as she requested it."
It would have been a horrible thing to do as a father but seeing the girl's waiting eyes filled with tenderness and happiness, he couldn't bear to say no to her.
"Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," Ren Ye started, his voice shaking.
His voice wasn't considered a voice that could coax soone but it was extrely deep and low. As he sung, the rhythms keep lowering gradually. Giving off an extrely calm and soothing tone.
He has mastered the art of changing voices from a young age. Although he had such skills, he couldn't be considered a person who liked to sing. To be precise, he hated singing; feeling it drains too much of his emotional energy from his body.
For so reason, he didn't feel as exhausted and bored as he anticipated. Instead, he felt extrely comfortable and curious as to what his voice sounded like in Ren Jia's eyes.
Unbeknownst to him, a pair of dim hazel eyes started to waver and open in the dark.
As he sang, Ren Jia sang along to the song.
Ren Ye not only sang one song but sang every song she had requested of him.
Ren Jia started snoring before he was done with his singing. The other side of the phone suddenly went silent, Ren Ye assud the little girl had fallen asleep.
"Is my voice really this soothing?" Ren Ye was rendered speechless by his own achievent.
Ren Ye specifically asked Old Yi but Old Yi didn't seem to respond. Ren Ye called out to him, "Old Yi?"
He didn't receive any response.
"Old Yi!"
"Huh?" Old Yi finally responded with a surprised voice, "What? What do you need for?"
"Was my voice nice to listen to?" Ren Ye asked with an extrely serious face. His face seed to say 'If you are not honest, I will murder you in my head.'
Old Yi coughed awkwardly, "Uh, I was asleep just now."
"I don't think you can sleep," Ren Ye remarked, using his knowledge of how Old Yi and the system work. One thing he knew was they can't fall asleep unless they are being forced by so evil forces.
"…"
Old Yi had been lying in his air bubble and had his ears turned off after Ren Ye sang the first chorus of the song, Old Yi would never admit to this out of fear Ren Ye might continue to bully him.
"Tsk, as I expected," Ren Ye scoffed loudly, "You are useless."
"…"
On the other side of the phone, Jing Xue swiftly opened her eyes and averted them to her daughter's sleeping face. Her lips seed to twitch as she wore a complicated expression.
"What is the point of hiding it?" Jing Xue suddenly asked in a hoarse tone, "Naughty girl."
Ren Jia pretended to fall asleep and close her eyes but upon realizing her Mama was awake and accusing her, she tried to stifle her laugh.
Before long, she started to break out into fits of childish laughter.
"Mama, did you enjoy Papa's singing too?" She asked Jing Xue with glowing eyes as she raised her tiny head to look at her.
Jing Xue calmly lowers her head before snorting, "I think I need to drink water."
"My throat is too dry," Jing Xue said in an extrely hoarse tone, reverting the topic to another topic.
Jing Xue left the room quickly whilst holding her phone. In her hand, no one realized her phone had been voice recording everything from the start until the finish.
As soon as she left the room, a blush climbed up to her neck.
-
Ren Ye's eyes started to awaken as he stared at himself in the mirror, his face was now no longer his. It was now Qi Yun in action.
He had soft wavering eyes but a rough face. He appeared to be soone who went through many sufferings in his life but he still managed to retain the pure innocence and gentleness of his eyes.
Ren Ye grabbed the mirror and inspected his face, "Perhaps, I could do a beard?"
"No," Old Yi objected, "I feel it would look horrendous on your face."
"Will it? I think I look too immature," Ren Ye said indifferently, "A beard will add more savageness and maturity to the man."
"His scars are enough to scare people away," Old Yi remarked with a deadpan expression.
"You're right," Ren Ye responded with a nod.
He specifically scattered deep and light scars on every part of his body, making sure to give him the image of a worthy soldier. The only scar she has that are visible to the public are the scar on the side of his face and across his temple.
"You should have said he had sacrificed himself to the enemy in order to protect his own teammates," Old Yi remarked calmly, "I doubt a modern soldier would look as maid as you are."
Ren Ye chuckled deeply, "We shall leave that up to the people's imagination. A normal being does not deserve to know what a pained man goes through."
Ren Ye wore a black double-chested suit and tie, giving him an extrely mature aura to his appearance. The suit he had chosen specifically fit his entire body and caused his muscles to chisel out.
Ren Ye was satisfied that he didn't make his face extrely handso or else, he would have to deal with beautiful won instead of n. This would cause him a lot of trouble with Ma Zheng and Jing Xue.
As he thought of this, he felt his chest beco tight and unbreathable.
"Just the thought of it," Ren Ye shivered, feeling as though a pair of eyes appeared above his head.
"I don't plan on dealing with romances and love while in another body," Ren Ye quickly said, "I will kill anyone regardless of who they are if they dare to harm or my family."
After he has said that, the feeling of having a pair of eyes above his head disappeared, causing him to heave a relieved sigh.
"I will do what I have promised the boy," 'Qi Yun''s eyes grew increasingly solemn as he raised his head and clenched them tightly.
As soon as he said that, his figure slowly dissipated like dust as though he had never appeared there in the first place.
Ren Ye teleported himself to the outskirts of HeWuan Forest. HeWuan Forest was an infamous forest for many citizens due to the dia coverage of the constant suicides and deaths that always occur here.
From what he has heard online, it used to be an ancient cetery that housed witches and evildoers. Fortunately, they have been prayed away from so monks who claid to know sorcery.
Ren Ye didn't fully believe this tale before as it sounded like sothing out of a person's imagination who belonged to that age and ti when irrational beliefs were countless and most people were illiterate to understand that they were being fooled.
Now since he has faced the specter in Ma Zheng's office and almost got killed by a possessed horse, he ca to more or less believe such stories.
"Why would his remains be buried here?" Ren Ye remarked as he raised his reflective tranquil eyes to look forward.
The forest was extrely dense as no one dared to venture inside and chop those trees off. Cases of people going missing from deciding to explore this forest were enough to drive workers away from even deciding to work on demolishing it.
Ren Ye raised his feet and teleported to every bear's nest he could find. He was even more surprised to find that the boy's remains were next to a bear's nest.
"Could the child have been murdered here?" Ren Ye thought suspiciously before stopped himself at a strange location.
He laid his feet on the ground and looked at the cave beside him, a dark sinister aura emitted from it; imdiately alerting Ren Ye not to venture further.
"This is not good," Ren Ye imdiately took a couple of steps back before teleporting himself to a safe place, further away from the cave.
"This forest feels extrely sinister in itself," Old Yi suddenly said, "It hides a lot of things."
Upon hearing this, Ren Ye frowned.
