Chapter 88: Chapter 88: The Semi-Final — Beneath Perfection (Part 4)

The arena did not erupt into chaos as many had expected after the previous clash. There were no thunderous cheers shaking the stands, no overwhelming surge of energy that made the battlefield tremble beneath the spectators’ feet. Instead, sothing far more subtle—and far more profound—took place.

The entire atmosphere tightened.

It felt as though the vast arena itself had drawn in a deep breath and chosen to hold it indefinitely. Every individual present, from the students watching anxiously in the stands to the instructors observing from above, sensed that sothing fundantal had shifted. It was not sothing that could be easily seen or described, yet its presence was undeniable.

Aether stood quietly, a few steps ahead of where he had been monts before. His posture remained upright and composed, his breathing steady and controlled as always. Across from him stood Valen, equally still, equally composed, his gaze unwavering.

The distance between them had not changed.

However, the balance that defined their confrontation no longer remained the sa.

For the first ti since the beginning of their battle, Valen had made a clear adjustnt.

The silver wolf lowered its stance with deliberate precision. Its movent did not convey aggression, nor did it suggest retreat. Instead, it reflected readiness—an elevated state of focus where every muscle, every breath, and every motion was perfectly aligned toward a singular purpose.

Its body appeared relaxed, yet coiled with restrained power. Its gaze locked firmly onto the Fla Sovereign Pup, and the intensity within that gaze alone seed to exert pressure on the surrounding space.

Aether noticed the shift imdiately.

"This is different," Aether said in a calm, asured tone. "Your presence has changed in a way that cannot be mistaken for a simple adjustnt. You are no longer maintaining the sa equilibrium as before."

The voice within him responded without delay, its tone analytical and precise. "That observation is accurate. He has abandoned the balance he maintained earlier and is now actively shifting the flow of the battle. This is no longer a test of control—it is the beginning of a decisive engagent."

Aether’s eyes narrowed slightly as he continued to study Valen.

"So you have decided to take this seriously," Aether said, his voice carrying neither accusation nor surprise, but quiet certainty.

Valen regarded him for a mont before responding. His expression remained calm, but there was a subtle shift in his gaze—sothing deeper, more focused than before.

"I have always been serious," Valen replied. "However, until now, there was no need to exceed a certain threshold. You have demonstrated that such restraint is no longer appropriate."

Aether tilted his head slightly, acknowledging the statent.

"In other words," he said, "you are now willing to show more of what you are capable of."

Valen did not deny it.

"That is correct," he said simply.

With that, Valen took a step forward.

The movent itself was neither fast nor slow, but it carried an undeniable weight. It was not rely a physical step—it was a shift in presence.

The mont his foot touched the ground, the atmosphere changed.

An invisible pressure descended upon the battlefield.

It could not be seen, nor could it be easily explained, yet it was impossible to ignore. The air grew heavier, denser, as though it had thickened into sothing that resisted movent. Even the ground beneath their feet appeared darker, as if the arena itself was reacting to the change.

Aether felt it instantly.

"You were holding back earlier," Aether said, his tone steady but firm. "This level of influence was not present before. You deliberately limited your output."

Valen t his gaze without hesitation.

"I did not consider it holding back," Valen replied. "It was simply a matter of efficiency. There is no reason to expend more effort than necessary."

Aether allowed himself a faint nod.

"And now it is necessary," he concluded.

"Yes," Valen confird.

The silver wolf began to move.

This ti, it did not rely on speed or sudden bursts of motion. Instead, it advanced step by step, each movent deliberate and asured.

And with every step it took, the pressure increased.

Aether could feel the difference clearly. It was not a direct force pressing against him, nor was it an attack in the conventional sense. Instead, it manifested as resistance—an unseen weight that made every movent slightly more difficult.

It was as though the space itself had beco an obstacle.

"You are not simply controlling your beast," Aether said under his breath. "You are controlling the environnt in which this battle takes place."

The voice within him responded imdiately. "That is correct. He is compressing the effective space around you, reducing your range of motion and limiting your available responses."

Aether’s gaze sharpened.

"So instead of overpowering

directly, you are restricting my options until I have no choice but to follow a predictable path," he said.

Valen’s expression remained composed, but there was a faint glimr of acknowledgnt in his eyes.

"You are correct," Valen said. "A battle does not need to be won through overwhelming force. If the opponent has no viable options, then the outco is already decided."

The silver wolf lunged forward.

Its speed was not significantly greater than before, but its presence carried a new kind of weight. When the Fla Sovereign Pup moved to intercept, the clash that followed was far more intense.

The sound of impact rang sharply across the arena.

The force spread outward in a visible ripple.

But this ti, the result was clear.

The Fla Sovereign Pup was pushed back.

Aether slid back half a step, maintaining his balance with ease. His expression remained calm, but his eyes reflected deeper focus.

"You have increased the density of your attacks without increasing the scale of your movents," Aether said. "Your efficiency has improved."

Valen inclined his head slightly.

"Efficiency is the foundation of control," he said. "When that control is refined beyond a certain point, it becos sothing greater."

Aether completed the thought.

"Mastery," he said.

Valen did not disagree.

The pressure continued to build as Valen advanced once more. The silver wolf moved in perfect synchronization with him, their actions unified and seamless.

Each step carried weight.

Each motion exerted force.

The Fla Sovereign Pup responded accordingly, its flas rising slightly as it prepared to counter the increasing pressure.

However, Aether raised his hand.

"Hold for now," he said quietly.

The Pup obeyed imdiately, its flas stabilizing instead of expanding.

Valen observed this with clear interest.

"You continue to restrain yourself," Valen said. "Even now, you are choosing not to respond fully."

Aether t his gaze calmly.

"There is no need to rush," he replied. "This is not yet the mont where everything must be decided."

From the perspective of the audience, however, the situation appeared entirely different.

"He is being pushed back again!"

"Valen has gotten serious now!"

"There is no way Aether can keep up!"

The murmurs spread rapidly, reinforcing the belief that Aether was losing.

But Aether remained composed.

Because he understood sothing that the others did not.

This was not yet the mont.

Inside his mind, his thoughts moved rapidly.

Every exchange.

Every shift.

Every detail.

All of it analyzed.

"He is not attacking directly," Aether realized. "He is shaping the battlefield itself."

"Yes," the voice confird. "He is narrowing your choices. Eventually, you will be forced into a single path."

"And when that happens," Aether said quietly, "he will end it."

The next exchange began.

The silver wolf attacked from the front.

Valen moved from the side.

The sa pattern.

But heavier.

More restrictive.

Aether moved to block the wolf’s attack.

But this ti—

Valen’s strike connected.

The impact landed against Aether’s shoulder.

The crowd gasped.

"That was a direct hit!"

Aether stepped back slightly, absorbing the force without losing balance. His breathing remained steady, his expression unchanged.

Because that strike had been allowed.

"You are still holding back," the voice said.

"Yes," Aether replied.

Valen stopped.

His gaze fixed on Aether with greater intensity.

"You are not reacting as soone who has been struck," Valen said. "Your composure has not changed."

Aether looked at him calmly.

"Should it have?" he asked.

Valen remained silent for a mont before asking, "Are you holding back as well?"

Aether answered with a question of his own.

"Are you?"

For the first ti, Valen’s expression shifted clearly.

"I see," he said quietly.

The atmosphere changed again.

The silver wolf adjusted its stance, lowering itself further as its presence intensified.

"You forced him," the voice said.

"That was the intention," Aether replied.

Valen raised his hand slightly.

The silver wolf responded instantly.

Its presence deepened.

Condensed.

Refined.

"This is where the real battle begins," Valen said.

Aether nodded.

"Yes," he said. "Now it begins."

The Fla Sovereign Pup stepped forward.

Its flas rose steadily.

For the first ti—

Aether did not suppress it completely.

Only partially.

Valen noticed.

"So you were hiding your strength as well," he said.

Aether replied calmly.

"Only what was unnecessary."

Both sides moved simultaneously.

The silver wolf lunged.

The Fla Sovereign Pup surged forward.

Valen stepped in.

Aether followed.

Their movents converged into a single mont.

The impact shook the arena.

This ti—

Neither side moved.

The ground cracked beneath them.

The air trembled.

But both remained steady.

Perfectly balanced.

Valen looked at Aether.

"So this is your true level," he said.

Aether shook his head slightly.

"Not yet," he replied.

For a brief mont, silence filled the space between them.

Then—

Valen smiled.

Just slightly.

And in that mont, both of them understood.

The battle so far—

Had only been the beginning.

What ca next—

Would decide everything.
