Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Fractured Paths
The massive stone barrier finished rising with a deafening grinding sound that echoed throughout the ruined chamber. Ancient chanisms hidden deep within the labyrinth groaned as the structure shifted, and clouds of dust fell from the cracked ceiling. The battlefield that had once been a single open chamber was now broken into several separated sections by towering stone walls.
Aether and Rylan stood on one side of the divided room, their section littered with shattered pillars and scattered rubble from the earlier battle. On the far side, separated by an enormous wall of stone, the silver-armored woman and the black-haired man were trapped in another sealed section of the chamber.
Between the divided sections of the battlefield—
The **Ancient Rune Guardian** remained.
The towering creature slowly turned its skull-like head, hollow eyes blazing with eerie green fire. Those burning eyes locked directly onto Aether and Rylan.
The monster had already chosen its next prey.
Rylan exhaled slowly as he stared up at the massive creature towering above them like a walking fortress.
"Well... that alliance didn’t last long."
He glanced briefly toward the stone barrier separating them from the other two challengers before looking back at the guardian again.
"Now we deal with this thing alone."
Beside Aether, the Fla Sovereign Pup stepped forward without hesitation. Crimson flas rippled across its small body, growing brighter with each passing mont as it faced the ancient guardian. Despite its relatively small size compared to the towering creature, the pup showed absolutely no fear.
The guardian roared again. The sound echoed through the fractured chamber like thunder exploding inside a cavern. Then it charged.
One of its massive legs rose high before slamming down toward Rylan.
BOOM.
The stone floor shattered beneath the impact, sending fragnts of rock flying in every direction. Rylan rolled quickly to the side, barely avoiding the crushing blow.
"Azure Coil!"
His serpent reacted instantly. The blue-scaled creature launched forward with incredible speed as energy surged along its body like flowing lightning. In a swift movent it wrapped tightly around the guardian’s leg, coils tightening with surprising strength.
For a brief mont, the creature’s movent slowed. Rylan shouted toward Aether.
"Now!"
But Aether had already moved.
"Crimson Step."
The Fla Sovereign Pup vanished in a sudden flash of fire, leaving behind only a brief trail of heat in the air.
A mont later it reappeared halfway up the guardian’s towering body. Its burning claws glowed brighter than before as it moved with deadly precision.
The pup slashed across the cracked rune along the creature’s spine.
CRACK.
The damaged rune shattered completely.
Green energy burst outward violently like an exploding storm of ancient power. The guardian roared in agony.
Its massive body trembled as the ancient energy flowing through its runic network suddenly destabilized.
But the monster was far from defeated. Two of its enormous legs swung outward like giant pillars sweeping across the battlefield.
The serpent was forced to release its grip instantly to avoid being crushed. Rylan stumbled backward as the creature lashed out wildly.
"Okay... it’s really angry now."
The guardian’s glowing eyes flared even brighter. Energy surged violently along the remaining runes across its spine.
Aether watched carefully.
The destruction of the first rune had disrupted the entire energy network flowing through the creature’s body. Now the remaining runes were glowing more intensely, overloaded with unstable power.
That ant only one thing.
If they destroyed another rune—
The entire system might collapse. Aether spoke calmly.
"Target the center rune."
Rylan nodded imdiately.
"Got it."
The guardian lunged forward again, enraged and unstable. Its massive skull snapped downward as its jaws aid directly for Aether. But the Fla Sovereign Pup was faster.
"Crimson Step."
The pup vanished once again in a burst of crimson fire. Monts later it reappeared on the creature’s back, claws gripping the stone-like surface. Directly beside the central rune.
The rune glowed intensely with unstable green energy, flickering as power surged through it. The guardian sensed the threat instantly. Its entire body twisted violently.
One of its massive legs swung upward in a desperate attempt to crush the fiery beast. The pup jumped away just in ti. It landed lightly atop the guardian’s skull.
anwhile—
Rylan seized the opening.
"Azure Fang!"
The serpent shot upward like a bolt of blue lightning. Its glowing fangs slamd directly into the central rune.
CRACK.
The rune fractured but did not fully break. The guardian roared in fury and slamd its body violently against the stone floor.
The resulting shockwave blasted outward across the chamber. The serpent was thrown aside.
Rylan slid several ters across the cracked floor before managing to stop himself.
"Almost!"
The central rune flickered violently. It was barely holding together. Aether stepped forward calmly. The mysterious golden energy surrounding him flickered briefly once again.
For just a mont—
The pressure inside the chamber shifted. Even the ancient guardian hesitated. Aether raised his hand slightly. The Fla Sovereign Pup understood imdiately.
"Fla Crown."
Crimson fire erupted across the pup’s entire body, expanding outward in a blazing aura. The flas burned brighter and hotter than ever before, forming a ring of fire around the small beast like a miniature sun.
Then it leaped.
The fiery beast launched itself from the guardian’s skull like a blazing cot descending from the sky. Its burning body slamd directly into the central rune.
BOOM.
The explosion shook the entire chamber. The central rune shattered completely.
For a brief mont—
Everything froze. Then the remaining runes along the guardian’s spine began flickering wildly.
Green energy surged uncontrollably across its body as the ancient runic network collapsed. Cracks spread rapidly across its stone armor.
The guardian let out one final roar.
And then—
Its enormous body collapsed. The ancient creature shattered into hundreds of fragnts of stone and bone that scattered across the ruined chamber.
Silence fell over the battlefield. Rylan dropped onto the ground, breathing heavily as the tension finally left his body.
"That... was insane."
His serpent slowly slithered back toward him, equally exhausted after the intense battle.
Aether remained standing quietly, his gaze fixed on the shattered remains of the guardian. Golden particles of energy began rising slowly from the broken runes scattered across the floor.
The ruins themselves were absorbing the guardian’s defeated power. Rylan eventually stood up again, stretching slightly as he looked around the devastated chamber.
"Well... at least we survived."
He glanced toward the massive stone barrier that separated them from the other challengers.
"Think they’re still alive?"
Before Aether could respond—
The labyrinth moved again. The ground trembled violently beneath their feet. The stone barrier between the divided chambers shifted slightly.
But instead of lowering or reopening—
New walls began rising from the floor. Multiple pathways appeared across the broken chamber. Each one led deeper into the ruins. Rylan frowned in confusion.
"Wait... what?"
The entire floor beneath them began shifting. Stone platforms slid apart like pieces of a massive puzzle. The ruins were separating them. Rylan realized what was happening almost imdiately.
"Oh no."
He looked toward Aether.
"The maze is splitting us up!"
The stone platforms continued moving rapidly.
Rylan’s section of the floor slowly drifted toward one of the newly opened corridors.
Aether’s section moved toward another. Rylan tried to jump across the widening gap—
But a massive stone wall slamd down between them.
"Seriously?!"
The two moving pathways continued sliding further apart. Rylan shouted across the growing distance.
"Guess we’re finishing this dungeon separately!"
His serpent hissed loudly beside him. Rylan gave Aether a confident grin.
"Try not to die before we et again!"
Aether gave a small nod. Monts later the shifting walls completely separated them.
The labyrinth had divided the challengers once again.
Aether’s pathway moved slowly forward into darkness.
The corridor ahead was much darker than the earlier sections of the ruins. The air felt colder here, and faint purple light glowed from ancient runes carved into the stone walls.
The atmosphere felt different. He had clearly entered a new section of the labyrinth.
A solo trial zone.
The Fla Sovereign Pup walked quietly beside him, its flas burning softly as it scanned the dark corridor.
Even the small beast seed more cautious now. After several minutes of walking, the corridor opened into a circular chamber.
At the center of the room stood a massive stone gate covered entirely in strange glowing runes.
The mont Aether stepped into the chamber—
The runes ignited.
A deep voice echoed through the ancient room.
"Trial Zone Activated."
"Single Challenger Detected."
"Evaluation Trial Begins."
The massive stone gate slowly began opening.
Behind it lay another chamber.
But unlike the previous rooms—
This one was completely empty.
No monsters.
No statues.
Only a glowing platform at the center. Aether stepped forward.
The mont his foot touched the platform—
Golden energy erupted around him. The runes across the chamber reacted violently.
For the first ti since the ruins had been built—
The trial system malfunctioned. Ancient chanisms deep within the labyrinth hesitated. As if confused.
The strange energy surrounding Aether was interfering with the ruins themselves.
Across the labyrinth—
Runes flickered erratically. The ruins had encountered sothing they could not understand.
Far beneath the labyrinth, inside a sealed chamber hidden deep within the ancient ruins, floating magical projections displayed the progress of every challenger still alive.
Most of them struggled through traps and monsters scattered throughout the labyrinth. But one projection stood out clearly.
Aether.
The mysterious observer watched quietly as the trial system began reacting strangely to his presence.
The ruins had started malfunctioning. That had never happened before.
The ancient chanisms had been designed to test challengers.
Not fail.
Yet sohow—
This challenger had disrupted their rules. The observer remained silent.
But its curiosity had clearly deepened. The trials ahead would continue.
Stronger monsters.
Deadlier challenges.
Soon only a handful of challengers would remain.
And eventually—
Soone would reach the deepest chamber of the ruins.
For now, the observer continued watching from the shadows. Waiting to see what would happen next.
