Chapter 123: Chapter 122: Ambush in the Forest

The forest had long since abandoned any pretense of normalcy.

It did not change in form. The towering trees still stretched skyward with their ancient trunks, and the tangled roots still carved uneven paths across the forest floor. The scattered ruins remained where they had always been—broken stone structures swallowed by moss and ti. Even the faint rustling of leaves continued to whisper through the air, carried by a wind that seed as indifferent as ever.

And yet, everything felt different.

Aether sensed it the mont he crossed the broken ridge of stone that marked the boundary of the previous hunting ground. The air itself seed to tighten, as if unseen hands had drawn invisible threads across the space, weaving a silent net around him. It was not an illusion, nor was it rely instinct. It was sothing deliberate, sothing controlled.

The watching had changed.

Before, it had been distant—careful, almost curious. Now, it carried intent.

Aether did not stop walking. His pace remained steady, his posture relaxed, as though he were simply continuing his exploration of the forest without a care in the world. To an outside observer, he appeared composed, perhaps even indifferent.

But beneath that calm exterior, his awareness expanded outward in every direction.

Every shift in the air.

Every fluctuation of energy.

Every unnatural silence between the sounds of the forest.

He felt it all.

"...They’re moving," the Fallen Succubus said, her voice echoing softly within his mind.

Unlike before, there was no trace of her usual laziness. Her tone had sharpened, refined into sothing focused and alert.

Aether’s eyes narrowed ever so slightly, though his expression did not change.

"I know," he replied inwardly, his voice calm and asured. "They’ve been waiting for the right mont. It seems they’ve decided this is it."

The pattern beca clearer with each step he took.

One presence ahead.

Two to his flanks.

And one trailing behind.

A perfect formation.

A calculated ambush.

Instead of concern, a faint, almost imperceptible smile touched the corners of his lips.

"...Good," he murmured quietly.

The Fallen Succubus noticed it imdiately. "You’re not even surprised," she said, a hint of curiosity slipping into her voice. "Most people would be preparing to retreat right about now."

Aether’s gaze remained forward, unwavering. "Retreat?" he repeated, as though the idea itself held no aning. "No. This is exactly what I was waiting for."

"What you were waiting for?" she asked, intrigued.

He nodded slightly. "Observation only tells

so much. Real growth cos from pressure. From being forced to respond without ti to think. If they want to test ..."

His eyes sharpened, a quiet intensity forming within them.

"...then I’ll give them a proper answer."

The mont he stepped into the clearing ahead, the forest seed to react.

A faint shimr rose from the ground, spreading outward in a wide arc. It was subtle, nearly invisible to the untrained eye, but Aether recognized it imdiately.

A barrier.

Not one designed to trap him physically, but to isolate the battlefield.

To prevent interference.

To ensure that whatever happened within this space remained contained.

"So they’ve committed," he said softly.

The Fallen Succubus let out a quiet laugh. "How considerate of them. They’ve even prepared the stage for you."

The atmosphere shifted again.

This ti, it was no longer subtle.

Four figures stepped out from the shadows, erging from different directions with precise, deliberate timing. Their movents were silent, their presence controlled, but there was no mistaking the weight they carried.

They were stronger than the ones before.

Far stronger.

Aether studied them carefully, his gaze moving from one to the next. Though their faces were hidden beneath cloaks, their auras told him everything he needed to know.

"...Elite tars," he said quietly.

One of the figures inclined his head slightly, as if acknowledging the assessnt.

"You recognize it quickly," the man said, his voice calm but firm. "That saves us ti."

Aether did not respond imdiately. Instead, his attention shifted to the beasts that accompanied them.

A massive horned creature stood at the front, its muscular body coiled with raw power. Each step it took caused the ground beneath it to tremble slightly, as though the earth itself struggled to bear its weight.

To the left, a shadow-like feline moved with unnatural grace. Its body seed to blur at the edges, its form blending seamlessly with the darkness around it. Its eyes glowed faintly, locked onto Aether with predatory focus.

Above, a winged beast hovered in the air, its massive wings beating slowly as it circled the clearing. Its gaze was sharp, calculating, waiting for the perfect mont to strike.

And finally, standing slightly behind the others, was a humanoid beast clad in tallic armor. Its movents were slow, deliberate, but its presence was undeniable—like an immovable wall that could not be easily overco.

Aether exhaled slowly.

"...Balanced," he said. "Offense, speed, aerial control, and defense. You’ve covered every angle."

"That was the intention," the sa voice replied. "We’re not here to experint anymore."

A brief pause followed.

"...Now we confirm."

The mont those words were spoken, the air seed to snap.

They moved.

All at once.

The horned beast charged forward with explosive force, its massive body tearing across the ground like a living battering ram. At the sa ti, the shadow feline vanished from sight, its form dissolving into darkness as it repositioned for a lethal strike.

Above, the winged beast folded its wings and descended rapidly, its trajectory aid directly at Aether.

And from behind, the armored humanoid advanced, its heavy steps shaking the ground with each movent.

Aether’s expression remained calm.

"Trinity Flow," he said quietly.

The mont the words left his lips, everything aligned.

The Fla Sovereign Pup surged forward, its body igniting with controlled, concentrated fire. The Spirit Fairy pulsed with a soft golden light, its energy spreading outward in a stabilizing wave. And the Fallen Succubus slipped into position, her presence subtle but undeniable.

This ti, there was no delay.

No hesitation.

Everything moved as one.

The horned beast reached him first.

Its charge was devastating, carrying enough force to shatter stone and uproot trees. But Aether did not retreat.

Instead, he raised his hand slightly.

"Condense."

The Fla Sovereign Pup responded instantly. The flas around it tightened, compressing into a focused stream of searing heat. The Spirit Fairy’s energy wrapped around the fire, stabilizing it, refining it, amplifying its precision.

The attack t the charge head-on.

The impact was explosive.

The ground beneath them cracked, sending fractures racing outward in all directions. For a brief mont, it seed as though the horned beast might break through.

But it didn’t.

The force held.

The beast’s montum halted, its massive body grinding to a stop against the wall of condensed fire.

A flicker of surprise passed through one of the cloaked figures.

At the sa ti, the shadow feline reappeared at Aether’s flank, its claws slashing toward him with lethal intent.

But the Fallen Succubus had already moved.

Her influence spread silently, subtly altering the creature’s perception. The feline’s timing shifted—just enough.

Its strike ca too early.

Aether stepped aside with minimal movent, his body shifting just enough to avoid the attack.

"Now."

The Fla Sovereign Pup turned, its flas snapping toward the exposed target.

The hit landed cleanly.

The feline was thrown back, its body skidding across the ground.

Above, the winged beast descended rapidly, its talons aid directly at Aether.

"Barrier."

The Spirit Fairy responded instantly, releasing a stronger pulse of energy. A translucent shield ford around Aether, shimring with golden light.

The impact ca a mont later.

The force of the collision reverberated through the barrier, causing it to tremble under the strain. Aether felt the pressure imdiately—the cost of maintaining such a defense.

"...It’s heavier than before," he noted.

"Of course it is," the Fallen Succubus replied. "They’re not holding back anymore."

Aether nodded slightly. "Neither will I."

Behind him, the armored humanoid advanced, stepping through the lingering flas without hesitation. Its body absorbed the damage, its movents unaffected.

Aether’s gaze sharpened.

"...High resistance."

"Then stop trying to overpower it," the Succubus said. "Outthink it."

He exhaled slowly.

"Illusion focus."

This ti, the Fallen Succubus did not hold back. Her influence spread across the battlefield, distorting perception on a deeper level. The enemies did not see illusions in the traditional sense. Instead, their timing faltered, their reactions delayed by fractions of a second.

It was subtle.

But it was enough.

Aether moved forward.

Not backward.

Not defensive.

Forward.

The shift was imdiate.

The battlefield changed.

The horned beast attempted to charge again, but its movent lagged just slightly. The winged beast adjusted its trajectory, but too late. The armored humanoid raised its arm to block—

But Aether was already there.

"Now."

The Trinity aligned perfectly.

Fire condensed into a single, focused strike.

The Spirit Fairy stabilized the energy, ensuring no loss of control.

The Fallen Succubus delayed the enemy’s reaction by just enough.

The attack landed.

Clean.

Precise.

Overwhelming.

The shadow feline fell first, unable to recover from the earlier strike.

The winged beast followed, its aerial advantage shattered as it crashed to the ground.

The horned beast roared, attempting one final charge—

But the next strike pierced through its defense, bringing it down.

Only the armored humanoid remained.

It stood there, damaged but unyielding.

Aether stepped forward, his gaze steady.

"End it."

This ti, there was no hesitation at all.

The full Trinity activated.

Everything aligned perfectly.

The final strike was not explosive.

It was controlled.

Condensed.

Layered with precision.

It struck the armored beast directly.

And this ti—

It did not withstand it.

The creature collapsed.

Silence followed.

The battlefield stilled.

Aether exhaled slowly, his breathing steady despite the intensity of the fight.

"...Better," he said.

There had been no delays.

No wasted movent.

Everything had flowed as one.

Behind him, the four cloaked figures remained.

They did not attack again.

Instead, they stepped back.

"...Confird," one of them said quietly.

"...Coordination stabilized."

"...Threat level increased."

Aether’s gaze shifted toward them, calm but sharp.

"You’re still testing ," he said.

The sa voice responded.

"...For now."

A brief pause followed.

Then, without another word, they vanished into the forest.

Just like that.

Aether stood alone once more.

The clearing was quiet again, but the silence felt different now.

He closed his eyes briefly, replaying the fight in his mind.

Every movent.

Every decision.

Every improvent.

When he opened them again, his gaze was sharper than before.

"...This is only the next step," he said quietly.

And sowhere beyond the trees—

The watching continued.
