Chapter 118: Chapter 117: First Hunt Outside the City

The massive gates of the Imperial City stood behind Aether like an unshakable wall of authority, their towering structure casting long shadows beneath the fading light of the evening sky. Built from ancient stone and reinforced with layers of protective formations, they represented more than just a physical boundary—they symbolized order, control, and the dominance of civilization over chaos.

Aether did not turn back to look at them.

There was nothing for him behind those gates that he needed at this mont.

The instant he crossed beyond their reach, the atmosphere shifted in a way that was impossible to ignore. The air felt lighter, freer, as though the invisible weight of rules and observation had been lifted from his shoulders. The rigid structure of the city gave way to sothing far more unpredictable—sothing raw and untad.

This was where strength mattered.

This was where truth revealed itself.

As he continued forward, the paved stone road beneath his feet gradually dissolved into uneven terrain. Cracks spread across the ground before giving way entirely to soil, roots, and scattered debris. The sounds of the city—voices, wheels, distant movent—faded into silence until nothing remained but the faint whisper of the wind brushing through leaves.

Ahead of him stretched a vast wilderness.

Tall trees rose like silent guardians, their dense canopies weaving together to block most of the sunlight. Shadows layered over one another, creating an environnt where visibility was limited and danger could erge from any direction without warning. Scattered throughout the forest were remnants of a forgotten past—broken pillars, collapsed stone arches, and ancient ruins that had long since been reclaid by nature.

This land was not abandoned.

It had simply changed ownership.

And now—it belonged to beasts.

Aether’s gaze swept across the terrain with quiet intensity, his eyes sharp and calculating as he absorbed every detail. "Good," he said softly, his voice calm but filled with intent. "This is far better than the academy’s training grounds."

There were no restrictions here. No instructors watching from a distance. No limitations placed on his abilities.

Only survival.

Only strength.

Only results.

A faint ripple of energy moved beside him, subtle but unmistakable. The Fla Sovereign Pup appeared first, its small figure stepping forward with a quiet confidence that reflected its master’s state of mind. The flas along its fur flickered gently, no longer wild or chaotic as they once were. Instead, they were controlled—refined—like a weapon that had finally learned discipline.

Above Aether’s shoulder, a soft golden-blue glow illuminated the surrounding area. The Spirit Fairy hovered silently, its delicate wings shimring faintly as it maintained a steady presence. Its aura brought a sense of calm that contrasted sharply with the dangerous environnt around them.

The Fallen Succubus did not manifest physically.

But Aether could feel her.

Hidden within his consciousness, watching everything with careful attention.

"You’re not going to call

out?" her voice echoed lazily in his mind, carrying a hint of amusent.

"Not yet," Aether replied without hesitation. "I want to test the foundation first."

There was a brief pause before she responded again, her tone shifting slightly. "So this is about control."

"Yes," Aether said simply.

He was not here to overwhelm enemies with brute force. He was not here to rely on overwhelming power.

He was here to understand.

To refine.

To perfect the way his abilities flowed together.

The forest greeted him with silence.

Too much silence.

There were no birds calling from the branches. No small creatures rustling through the undergrowth. Even the wind seed subdued, as though the entire area was holding its breath.

"We’re already being watched," the Fallen Succubus murmured quietly.

Aether gave a slight nod, his expression unchanged. "I know."

But he did not slow down.

If anything, he continued forward with even greater purpose.

The deeper he ventured into the forest, the more oppressive the environnt beca. The trees grew thicker, their branches intertwining to block nearly all remaining light. The ground beneath his feet beca uneven, tangled with roots and covered in layers of fallen leaves that muffled his footsteps.

Then he saw it.

A broken stone arch stood ahead, half-collapsed and covered in moss. It leaned at an unnatural angle, as though ti itself had tried—and failed—to erase its existence.

Its Old & Ancient.

And most importantly—

It is Occupied.

A low growl erged from the shadows beneath the arch, deep and resonant. It carried a warning, a challenge, and a hunger that could not be ignored.

Aether’s eyes sharpened instantly.

From the darkness, a creature stepped forward.

Its body was large and lean, covered in rough, bark-like armor that resembled the surface of ancient trees. Its limbs were long and powerful, built for sudden bursts of speed, and its eyes glowed faintly red with predatory intent.

"...Ruin Lurker," Aether identified calmly.

A mid-tier beast known for its ambush tactics and coordinated attacks.

"...And it’s not alone," the Fallen Succubus added quietly.

Aether did not move, but his awareness expanded outward, scanning the environnt.

Left.

Right.

Behind.

Three more presences revealed themselves.

Four beasts in total.

They were not scattered randomly.

They had ford a periter.

Encirclent.

Aether exhaled slowly, his breathing steady and controlled. "Good," he said again, this ti with a faint edge of anticipation in his voice.

This was exactly what he needed.

"Stay close," he instructed quietly.

The Spirit Fairy floated slightly higher, positioning itself behind him while maintaining a clear line of influence over both Aether and the Fla Pup.

The Fla Sovereign Pup lowered its stance, flas gathering subtly around its body as it prepared to move.

The first Ruin Lurker attacked without warning.

It lunged forward with explosive speed, its movent nearly silent as it cut through the shadows directly toward Aether.

"Move," Aether commanded.

The Fla Pup reacted instantly, dashing forward—not to block the attack, but to intercept its trajectory.

Flas erupted from its body.

But this ti, they were different.

They did not spread wildly. They did not explode outward.

They were focused.

Aether guided the energy with precision, channeling it from his core through the Fla Pup and into the attack.

When fire t the charging beast, the collision was sharp and controlled. The impact forced the Ruin Lurker backward, disrupting its montum—but not eliminating it.

Before Aether could follow up, a second Lurker attacked from the side.

Faster.

Lower.

More precise.

Aether shifted his stance slightly, his movents minimal but deliberate.

The Spirit Fairy responded instantly.

A soft pulse of golden light expanded outward, forming a thin, translucent barrier just as the beast struck.

The impact did not shatter the shield.

Instead, it slowed the beast, its force absorbed and diffused across the surface.

"...So it converts force rather than resisting it," Aether noted under his breath.

"Correct," the Fallen Succubus replied. "Which ans you can’t rely on it for prolonged defense."

Aether didn’t respond, because a third attack was already coming—from behind.

He turned just enough to track the movent.

"Support," he said.

This ti, the Spirit Fairy’s energy did not form a shield.

Instead, it flowed into the Fla Pup.

The effect was imdiate.

The fire stabilized further, becoming denser, sharper, more controlled.

The Fla Pup released a concentrated burst of fla.

The attack struck the third beast directly, sending it crashing backward with significantly greater force than before.

"...Better," Aether murmured.

The fourth Lurker hesitated for a fraction of a second, its instincts reacting to the sudden shift in pressure.

But it did not retreat.

Instead, all four beasts moved together again.

This ti—fully coordinated.

Aether’s eyes narrowed.

This was no longer a simple encounter.

For a brief mont, his commands lagged.

Too many variables.

Too many inputs.

The flow broke.

"You’re overthinking it," the Fallen Succubus said sharply.

Aether exhaled.

Then simplified.

Instead of controlling every detail, he shifted his approach.

"Together," he said quietly.

The change was imdiate.

The Fla Pup attacked.

The Spirit Fairy supported.

The Fallen Succubus applied subtle influence—not overwhelming, but enough to disrupt timing.

The beasts hesitated.

Just slightly.

But that was enough.

Aether seized the opening.

"Now."

The Fla Pup released a final, focused surge of fire, enhanced and stabilized by the Fairy’s energy.

The attack struck cleanly.

One beast fell.

Then another.

The formation collapsed.

The remaining two lost coordination.

Within monts—the battle ended.

Silence returned to the forest.

Aether stood still, his breathing steady, his gaze fixed on the fallen beasts.

"...Your power has improved," the Fallen Succubus said.

Aether nodded slowly.

"Yes," he admitted.

Then after a brief pause, he added, "But it’s still not enough."

He looked at the battlefield again, analyzing every mont of the fight.

"The delay between thought and action... it’s still there."

The Spirit Fairy hovered closer, its soft glow pulsing gently as if responding to his thoughts.

"I’m stronger," Aether continued quietly, "but not efficient."

The forest remained silent.

But deeper within its shadows—

Sothing else watched.

Not beasts.

Not wild creatures.

Sothing more deliberate.

And this ti—

They were paying attention.
