"Rest is not surrender. It is preparation for the next breath."

The wind whispered softly through the canopy of the forest as Haji erged from the hidden tunnel, carrying a small, limp form over his shoulder. Koji, pale, unconscious, but still alive, rested in his arms like a fragile promise. His tiny fra was far too light. It pained Haji to feel the boy's ribs even through his tunic.

The trees stood silent, the air tense. Haji's senses swept the surrounding forest, no footsteps, no hostile chakra signatures, no movent except for birds shifting in the branches. Still, caution guided his every step as he descended the trail that led back toward the village.

Fifteen long minutes later, Haji stood in front of a small, weather-worn cottage on the village's edge. A warm glow flickered behind the windows. Before he could knock twice, the door flung open.

"Koji!" an elderly woman cried, rushing out barefoot across the threshold. Her hair was tied back with frayed ribbon, her eyes already welling with tears.

Haji gently knelt and passed the boy into her trembling arms. "He's okay," he said, voice soft. "Unconscious, but not wounded. Let him rest. Warm soup, light broth only. Nothing heavy tonight."

"Oh, thank the spirits… thank you, Haji…" she whispered, clutching the boy tightly as she sank to her knees. Neighbors began to stir. Curious voices murmured from nearby hos.

Haji turned quickly and slipped back into the shadows of the woods before the attention could spread.

Back at the underground base…

The faint golden glow of chakra lanterns greeted him in the tunnel. Haji resealed the stone entrance behind him and checked the integrity of the containnt structure.

Haku remained trapped within, still unconscious, breathing faintly.

Satisfied, Haji moved toward his makeshift cot and dropped onto it. His limbs scread. Every muscle pulsed with tension and spent chakra.

He had done it. He'd rescued the children. Captured Haku. And Zabuza—

Zabuza would co.

He had no idea when. But it was inevitable.

So he slept. Heavy and deep, in the embrace of exhaustion.

Dawn.

A pressure in the air stirred Haji from sleep. It wasn't a sound, more like the way the earth felt before a tremor.

He sat up, silent.

The tunnel seal across the chamber hissed. Then a slow, grinding noise echoed.

The stone wall peeled back, and mist crept into the room like a breath held too long.

Heavy boots clacked against the floor.

And through the pale fog stepped a man wrapped in grey cloth and nace, his broad shoulders outlined by a massive sword strapped across his back.

Zabuza Momochi.

One eye visible. Cold. Sharp as the blade he carried.

Haji rose smoothly to his feet, his pulse quick but asured.

"I see you found the path," he said, voice level.

Zabuza's eye scanned the chamber. Then locked onto the stone containnt cell, where Haku lay propped within the hardened Earth Release bonds.

"Haku."

The na fell from his lips like a stone.

Haji raised one hand. "You take another step, and he's gone. Don't test ."

Zabuza didn't move. But his grip shifted ever so slightly.

Then ca the voice from the containnt alcove.

"Zabuza…" Haku stirred weakly, eyes fluttering open. "It's all right… I lost fairly."

There was pain in his tone, but no resentnt.

Zabuza exhaled through his nose, like a beast on the edge of rage, slowly leashing itself.

"He doesn't want to fight," Haku added. "He wants Gato stopped."

A pause. The mist thickened.

Then Zabuza growled, "So what."

Haji's eyes narrowed. "Then maybe we don't have to be enemies."

Zabuza stepped forward, but only a single pace. "Let Haku go. I'll deal with Gato. That was the job anyway. I've had enough of that rat anyway."

Haji didn't lower his hand yet. "Gato's not just a rat. He's a plague. The villagers are disappearing. Children are being taken. You really think this ends with just a paycheck?"

Zabuza's eye twitched, his silence deepening. The mist flared slightly behind him.

"You think I don't know that?" he snapped. "I've seen what he is. I didn't co here to play politics. But even I know a line's been crossed."

"Then cross back," Haji replied. "Help cut him down."

The pause stretched. Finally, Zabuza tilted his head, studying Haji with dangerous calm, this kid dares to ask a ninja to kill his employer, his quite brave.

"I'll kill Gato. But I don't owe you anything beyond that."

Haji didn't blink. "Just don't betray the ones who can't fight back. That's all I'm asking."

A soft grunt. Zabuza turned his gaze to Haku. "Can you walk?"

Haku gave a weak nod. "Yes… I think so."

Haji approached slowly and began to unweave the Earth chakra bindings. Haku slumped forward but caught himself on one knee.

"I told you," Haku said softly to Zabuza. "He doesn't want to fight."

Zabuza didn't respond with words. He reached out, rested one large hand on Haku's shoulder, and helped him stand.

"Rest up," he muttered. "We've got a rat to kill."

And with a nod to Haji, not of thanks, but of acknowledgnt, they turned and walked back into the mist.

Haji stood alone in the silence of his base.

He had made a deal with devils. But he had turned enemies into weapons.

And Gato's ti was almost up.
