In Silverdale, residents were watching Adam’s disaster like it was a stage play and he was an actor. Every fever wasp that made it through a newly ford cracked followed him like he was their chosen test subject.

So far, he had speed on his side, and he was zooming left to right to throw them off, but they were equally determined to sting him.

He desperately knocked on door to door, hoping for one to be opened but nobody dared to let him in. Not even his wife Dalen. She was one of the people standing guard behind the door of their apartnt building, holding a broom.

Her mother-in-law was looking on with worried eyes and fear. "Dalen..." she called out softly, in a voice that carried a plea.

A guard shook his head. "Nope, don’t try to beg her. We all agreed not to open any window or door in this building. He went out there voluntarily."

An older woman sighed. "Let him learn."

Dalen looked away from her mother-in-law. Truly, she could not help. If she tried to convince others to open the door, maybe they would push her out as well.

"Do you want to go outside and help him fight them off?" Soone asked Adam’s mother, Mrs. Dodd.

She backed away, a look of horror on her face. She had not applied the cream because Adam had thrown it all out before it could be used. How then could she go out when it had been proven that the wasps were real and only those who applied cream were safe?

"I thought so," Soone muttered.

Adam stopped by a building that was once a bakery before the apocalypse. "Help."

"Thought you said you could handle it!" a woman shouted from a window, and she closed it quickly before a wasp could enter through it.

Adam shrieked louder. "GIVE THE CREAM! Throw so down to ."

"You said you didn’t need it!" a man yelled back from behind the door.

Adam was stung and he scread. The sound was worse than a cow being butchered brutally. More wasps attached to him, covering his head.

He ran out blindly and ca too close to the laser filant.

Lisha’s voice ca from a drone perched on a pole near the filant.

"Adam turn back, you are too close to the filant. Stop moving, there is a cure for fever wasp stings. Find the nearest water source and..."

But her warning was too late. He crossed the boundary line and instantly the laser filants sliced through him. One second, he was there and the next, Adam was gone.

Sunshine winced. Not because she liked him—she did not—but because she hated pointless deaths. But this one? This one was on Adam.

The fever wasps continued to attack for another two hours, endless as if they were being released from a factory. They continued to perish,

The mist finally began to retreat. Most fever wasps_ dead. All watchers silent and back to lounging on the bubble in a relaxed manner.

All except Pink, who stared at the do with bloodlust simring in her eyes. She was trapped. She knew it.

Sunshine stepped outside the command center and looked up at Pink, their gazes locking across the divide. Usually after failure, Pink flew off angrily and screeched.

But tonight, she couldn’t.

The laser filant kept her prisoner_ furious, she paced like a caged predator.

Sunshine didn’t lower the filant. She didn’t even consider it. It would stay up all night. No watcher would leave. No wasp would return. No threat would cross_ not tonight. She exhaled, shoulders slumping in pure, exhausted relief.

"Thank you, Zulu," she whispered to herself...because the parrot, insufferable as she was, had saved them all from being infected in a single night. The war wasn’t over. But tonight...they’d won.

When Sunshine finally returned ho that night, exhaustion clung to her like soot, but warmth flooded her chest at the sight of her children rushing toward her.

Castiel hugged her legs, Earl grabbed her hand, and Ariel_ still buzzing from his earlier invisibility chaos_ just grinned proudly. "Mom, you really are a living hero." He gave her a thumbs up.

"Well," Rori said "I cooked your dinner Suni, in my books, I am a hero too."

"That you are, Rori." Sunshine smiled at the older woman.

She kissed each of the children on their heads, relief sinking into her bones. They were safe. That was all she cared about.

For that reason,_ and against her better judgnt_ she had invited Zulu ho for a dinner.

The mont Zulu flew in, she landed dramatically on the table, fluffed up, and declared, "I expect a feast worthy of my greatness."

Sunshine rolled her eyes but prepared anyway. She went into the space, to the food court and bought every seed she thought Zulu would love, plus so special ones the bird had never tried.

There were bowls of safflower seeds, lon seeds, roasted nuts, sweet kernels, and even a dish of exotic golden seeds that cost more than most people’s weekly food budget.

Zulu stared at the spread like she had just ascended into paradise.

"Oh, purple, you really did not have to go through the trouble.....this is beyond my expectations."

She didn’t eat delicately_ she devoured.

Seeds flew and crumbs fell.

She smacked her beak dramatically between bites. "This is what I deserve. Truly. A hero’s banquet. Saving the base is tiring, you know_ so much intelligence required, so much observation, not every dummy can do it. Honestly, I should eat like this for the rest of my life, it’s only fair."

Sunshine raised a brow. "You could. As long as you keep spying on the watchers."

Zulu froze mid-chew, then tilted her head. "Or..." she began slowly, "I could move in here."

Hades almost choked on his drink.

Sunshine blinked. "Move in?"

"Yes. I no longer feel safe out there, the watchers must be wondering how you were prepared for the attack...soon they will know that it was ." Zulu announced. "Also, I have made enemies, envious birds. Angry insects, animals I annoy with my singing and talking. I deserve a ho with warm lights, good snacks, and protection. And as a bonus I will babysit your children."

The kids squealed imdiately.

"YES!" Ariel gasped. "Zulu can sleep in my room!"

"No, mine!" Earl shouted.

"We can build her a nest!" Castiel suggested, already planning.

The bear huffed, probably already dreading sharing space with a loud new roommate.

Sunshine stared at the children, then at Hades, then at Zulu. "This is a terrible idea. Zulu is a bad influence."

"Terrible influence," Hades agreed.

Zulu flicked a seed at him. "This isn’t a request. I’m simply informing you of your new living arrangents."

Hades whispered, "We already have our hands full_ the kids, the bear...and now a parrot?"

Sunshine whispered back, "We can’t kick out our only informant. But we can delay her." She raised her head and turned to the bird. "Zulu, you already have an owner."

Zulu squawked. "Excuse you, a what now?"

"An owner." Sunshine repeated.

Zulu stomped her foot, "Purple are you insulting ? I am an independent, intelligent self-employed woman, nobody owns . If you are going to insult , I will have to rethink this partnership."
