The Hanlin Academy was essentially the secretarial institution of the feudal emperors, with the organization and role of Hanlin Academies in various dynasties being largely similar but slightly different. The power and authority of a Hanlin depended on the degree of trust bestowed by the leadership.
During Earth’s Tang Dynasty, the Historical Museum had compiler-editors responsible for the national history, while the Song Dynasty’s Veritable Records Office had compiler-officials in charge of compiling true records. The Historical Institutes of the Liao Dynasty, as well as the Hanlin Academies of the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, all had compiler-officials, with the Ming and Qing typically granting this position to the number one scholar of the first ranking from the imperial examinations. Generally, right after the announcent of the palace examination results, the number one scholar of the first ranking (the top scholar) was imdiately appointed as a compiler at the Hanlin Academy.
After the palace examination, the top scholar was appointed as a compiler at the Hanlin Academy, while the second and third scholars were made editors there. The other successful candidates, called Hanlin academicians, would be scrutinized again after three years, and those who passed were appointed as reviewers at the Hanlin Academy. The rest were assigned to various departnts to take up posts such as Section Chief or were preferentially appointed as County Magistrates, a process known as ’disbanding the gathering’.
In the Qing Dynasty, for instance, the tropolitan examinations were held once every three years in Kyoto. Those who passed these exams were called "tribute scholars," also known as "successful imperial examination candidates," with the number one scholar being called the "tropolitan top scholar." The imperial examination for advanced scholars was held in the Taihe Hall, and the one who ca first in these exams was personally chosen by the Emperor, known as the "top scholar," with the second and third being called "second top scholar" and "flower of the imperial examinations," respectively.
These top three were collectively known as "first ranking scholars" and received the "imperial examination graduate" title conferred by the Emperor. "Second ranking scholars" could receive the "imperial examination degree holder" title, and "third ranking scholars" could be granted the title "holder of the sa imperial examination degree."
However, only these "first ranking scholars" were imdiately appointed official positions following the announcent in the Golden Hall according to the regulations.
The position for the "top scholar" was called "compiler at the Hanlin Academy," a sixth rank official position, akin to a regional appointnt level.
The "second top scholar" and "flower of the imperial examinations," on the other hand, were appointed as "editors at the Hanlin Academy," official positions of the seventh rank, equivalent to the role of a County Magistrate and quite literally, a "sesa official."
The other successful examination candidates were called "Hanlin academicians." After another three years and a subsequent examination, they could be appointed as "reviewers at the Hanlin Academy," of the seventh rank as well, which is equivalent to a deputy bureau-level position.
The position of "compiler" involved the official duty of compiling true records and morials.
The ’Great Qian Empire’ and Earth’s ancient Eastern realms were strikingly similar, with the compiler at the Hanlin Academy holding a similar position, and as the top scholar, his official post was determined imdiately after the announcent of the palace examination results without the need to wait like other successful candidates.
However, it was the peak of the sweltering sumr, and the Emperor, considering the welfare of the freshly appointed scholars, allowed him to rest at ho and wait until the intense heat passed. Therefore, when Xu Jin and the others arrived, Li Yang was still at ho.
Given the current situation, this favored proponent of the main battle faction was likely to beco the Emperor’s personal secretary directly.
"If that’s the case, then good, that’s good."
Upon hearing what Li Ming said, Xu Jin breathed a sigh of relief.
The martial arts sect’s recent actions had been sowhat hasty. If the war were to erupt suddenly, many aspects would not be well prepared, which would be quite inappropriate. However, if there was ample ti to prepare, then many things could undoubtedly be organized in a much better way.
Furthermore, the stockpiling of supplies, the relocation of personnel, and other such matters could be more thoroughly executed without having to make too many sacrifices due to ti constraints.
"In this period, the sect can go down the mountain to recruit more disciples with good aptitude and temperant. In doing so, when the great war comnces, we can avoid the tragedy of having nearby talented youths forcibly conscripted and perishing on the battlefield."
"With proper handling, the period of war can be the ti for the sect, which has been cloistered for years, to rise."
Li Ming made his recomndations earnestly.
Once war starts, nobody knows what directions it may take. If it cos to drafting soldiers, that is a situation nobody wants to see.
But regardless of whether one wants to see it or not, it’s essential to be fully prepared.
Should such an event occur, allowing these young people with martial arts potential to easily enter the battlefield would be a waste of their talents.
Rather than that, it’s better to bring them into the sect for proper cultivation. Even if they are only laying the foundation now, they could beco an excellent asset for the sect in the future.
There is also another layer of aning to this.
Li Ming looked at the twenty-six robust disciples of the Qingsong Sect standing in the main hall, their eyes brimming with determination. He knew the sect had invested heavily to ensure his safety.
Having beco the top scholar and favored by the Emperor, it was unclear how far Li Yang could go in the future, which was undoubtedly a great boon for the Qingsong Sect.
In the future, Li Ming would be their support.
At the sa ti, for Li Ming, the Qingsong Sect was also a source of strength.
Strengthening the Qingsong Sect now was equivalent to enhancing his own power. Once he took office, no matter the position he held, having a martial arts sect capable of providing high-end martial support at his disposal would grant him more leeway and the ability to perform better.
Besides, there was also the matter of the Qingsong Sect’s position in his hotown. A stronger Qingsong Sect would an better protection for his family ho.
Although he intended to develop his family’s power, martial arts sects naturally had advantages that ordinary families did not, as evidenced by the fact that sect disciples were exempt from conscription.
Powerful warriors play a significant role for a country, whether positive—like protecting the Emperor and officials—or negative—like assassinating them.
Of course, they could also assassinate others, an advantage that ordinary powers simply cannot match.
