A lot of things were scattered everywhere. Tools made of glass, unknown liquid, and papers...
On top of that, there were also bodies, so dead while the rest were one step away from taking their last breath. The most grueso sight... limbs, head, intestines were all over the floor.
Still as fresh as the sll of the blood.
Zerra stepped inside.
In an instant, a strange monster with a bloated body, growling in an animalistic way, leaped at her. She took her pitchfork and stabbed its heart, her feet kicking the monster. It was pushed a few ters away.
"An experintal subject," Cassias said solemnly.
There wasn’t just one. More leaped out of the wide-open rooms. Shrieks of pain reverberated all over, chaotic. They didn’t co from the monsters, but the ability users that didn’t have ti to escape.
So of them had escaped while they sacrificed the rest. They didn’t forget to release all the experintal subjects to deal with people from the base, using their forr teammates as bait.
These monsters resembled zombies in a way; they were hungry for flesh. Chunks of flesh were everywhere, scattered on the floor.
They saw one person who had their stomach contents dug out, already dead. A few such monsters surrounded the corpse, digging and having a feast. Its form was so unrecognizable that it was unknown whether it was a man or woman.
"Hiss, what are these things?" The mont Laziel entered the room, he flinched. He had noticed it when Zerra headed to the wooden hut, so he followed.
He didn’t expect such a grueso sight awaited them.
The monsters had different shapes, each. The inhumane researcher had embedded parts of animal limbs in them. Whether it was their hands or feet, at least one of them was from animals.
"What were those bastards trying to do? Creating such monsters and... and..." he was too overwheld by emotions that he couldn’t form words properly.
He adjusted his emotions and charged ahead with so reluctance. He did recognize they were once humans too.
Zerra secretly paid attention to him. Among the siblings, Laziel had always been the most soft-hearted despite his sotis vicious mouth. That was also the reason ira could do whatever she wanted to him. Because he had allowed her to.
It had taken him longer compared to others to adapt to the new rule of the apocalypse, where only the strongest would survive. She was slightly relieved that her disappearance had a positive impact on him.
He was much more powerful than before. Seeing him doing well, she no longer paid attention to him.
"Sister Amora," Zerra called out to the person not far from her.
Amora wiped her face, which was splattered with dirty blood. She turned to Zerra.
"Did you find your uncle?" She asked softly in a concerned tone.
Seeing most of the experintal subjects turned into hideous monsters... even just the thought that a relative was among them was heartbreaking enough.
"Not yet," Amora panted. Her eyebrows knitted together as if she were feeling great trouble. Her face was gloomy, like dark clouds looming over her.
How could they recognize people when their faces no longer resembled a human? Even the traces that they were once humans like them were nowhere to be found.
Amora pursed her lips. "I will go find my cousin."
With that, she leaped away. Whenever she faced a monster, she wouldn’t imdiately kill it. She would inspect them from head to toe, trying to find any traces of her uncle in them.
It was a sorrowful sight to see.
"Zee," Cassias arrived beside her.
She snapped back to her senses. She withdrew her gaze and let out a breath. "Let’s go find that Daniel."
They inspected every room. From a distance, the wooden hut looked like it was a simple and small dwelling, but the inside was very wide. They had at least sixteen small rooms and a few large rooms.
The small rooms always had at least a monster inside.
"Not this one," Zerra furrowed her brows. In her mory, Daniel had the least weird transformation.
Even though his face was bloated, his limbs still resembled humans, only twice bigger than how he looked before. There were no claws or animal legs.
"These people left this place to run away with their tails tucked between their legs," she mocked. She pondered. "Could it be that they actually evacuated a few days before?"
"Let’s go check the other rooms." Cassias suggested.
With that, the electrocuted monster, which was rooted to its spot, turned black as if it had been burned. Its heart exploded. Slowly, the cruel lights in its feral eyes faded away.
Zerra fell into a slight trance. Did she just see its last relieved breath as it died?
Right. They were once human. Now, sothing had taken over their bodies, and they couldn’t even die even if they wanted to.
A little sorrowful, she followed Cassias to the next room.
"No, no, don’t kill ," soone shouted from inside the room.
They finally found a living ability user who had participated in the human experint. His eyes were sowhat crazy. When he saw Cassias and Zerra, his eyes lit up as if he had seen hope.
"S-save ..." he crawled to them with great difficulty. He begged, "I will tell you everything you want to know!"
Cassias and Zerra exchanged glances.
Just as the ability user was about to grab Zerra’s leg, Cassias pulled her close and kicked the man away. The man let out a pained groan. His eyes held so fear, and he no longer dared to approach them.
"These monsters... they want to kill ," he chattered, eyes full of fear. Then, his eyes widened as he thought of sothing. He pointed at them. "You... you two are powerful, right? Bring out of here. They abandoned ..."
Zerra asked him. "Do you know experint subject 064?"
"064?" He looked taken aback. "Are you looking for him? I know where he is. If I tell you, will you bring out?"
"Show us where he is first," Cassias snapped.
"Of course, but the monsters..." he hesitated.
"We will deal with it," Cassias retorted.
With that, as if enduring his fear and nervousness, he led them out of the room, heading toward a bigger room.
"He should be here, but..." he had a look of anxiety.
However, the look of anxiety was gone in an instant. He clutched the doorknob and opened it.
Laughing madly, he cursed them. "All of you, die!"
Dozens of monsters inside poured out. Zerra finally knew why he had stalled for ti and pretended. He was waiting for others to co closer, away from the door. He was making sure to get as many killed as possible!
