571. Red Robin Seriously Injured!
Turning up the system volu, the sound of the news anchor soon filled the speakers.
"… The lab is under attack, and the surrounding area has beco a battlefield. We are unable to confirm the identity of the attackers, but most witnesses report seeing a blue light descending from the sky, confirming that the attackers are from outer space.
Local police are attempting to control the situation, but they are struggling to make progress. Currently, there are no further updates, though so witnesses claim they saw Red Robin."
"S.T.A.R. Labs."
Bruce Wayne narrowed his eyes, his brow furrowing deeply.
"Do you know what that place is?" Hippolyta glanced at Bruce, sensing that he already knew sothing.
"S.T.A.R. Labs is a scientific organization independent of the governnt and military. They're passionate about researching all kinds of technologies, sotis even doing covert work for the military."
As Bruce spoke, he suddenly had a realization, his eyes widening.
"Red Robin told before that he was going to find Victor's father.
Yes, that's it!"
"What do you an?" Hippolyta was confused.
But Bruce Wayne was already on the move, standing up quickly.
"It's Victor's father. He's been researching the Mother Box at S.T.A.R. Labs! The Court of Owls' intelligence, and the heavily wounded Victor, were turned into a cybernetic being by his father.
This is not Earth technology—this is Apokoliptian technology! The Mother Box was activated and turned Victor into what he is. The one who activated the Mother Box and triggered it is Victor's father!"
As he spoke, Bruce Wayne quickly made his way toward his suit's wardrobe.
He turned to Hippolyta and shouted from a distance,
"Go wait on the Batplane. We need to get to S.T.A.R. Labs as quickly as possible!"
----------------------------------
On the other side of the city,
The S.T.A.R. Labs division was engulfed in flas and chaos.
The local police had deployed all available forces, trying to break into S.T.A.R. Labs to rescue the researchers inside.
But to their surprise, when they arrived, they were confronted by a swarm of monstrous creatures in the sky, resembling locusts.
These creatures were highly formidable, with strong defensive capabilities, and the police's firepower struggled to break through.
Reluctantly, the police took cover behind vehicles and set up a defensive periter, launching counterattacks on the creatures. They hoped to hold them off until the military arrived with reinforcents.
Inside S.T.A.R. Labs,
Shattered glass covered the floor, and distant cries of agony echoed. In a secluded corridor, two individuals were hurriedly fleeing.
"It's here." One of them, a middle-aged black man in a white lab coat, pointed toward a nearby laboratory and whispered.
"Quick, get the item out before they find us."
The second person was none other than Red Robin, Tim Drake, who was clutching his left shoulder, enduring intense pain as he gritted his teeth.
Tim's mission at S.T.A.R. Labs was to contact Victor's father.
The Teen Titans were severely lacking in new blood. Including the recently joined Tula, there were only three mbers, and if Tim wanted to build up their forces, he needed to find more young heroes like himself.
Victor, transford into a cyborg, was one of Tim's current targets.
Being turned into a machine had subjected Victor to inhuman pain, which could easily provoke negative emotions within him. To prevent him from turning to the dark side, Tim had resolved to find Victor as soon as possible and guide him to beco a hero.
However, due to Victor's extre proficiency with computers, finding him through the network was nearly impossible, and doing so could alert him and jeopardize their mission.
So, Tim decided to change tactics and ca to S.T.A.R. Labs to et with Victor's father and see if he could persuade him to help.
But Tim never expected that as soon as he arrived at S.T.A.R. Labs and hid in the shadows, he would witness a winged, humanoid monster preparing to attack Victor's father, Silas Stone.
Without hesitation, Tim leaped out from the shadows and engaged the creature in battle, saving Silas.
But Tim had clearly underestimated the enemy. After defeating one of the creatures, he didn't have ti to catch his breath before more than ten more appeared and attacked him.
To protect Silas, Tim had to split his attention between fighting the monsters and ensuring Silas's safety, which led to him being ambushed. A laser shot pierced his shoulder.
The creatures were biological weapons, and every attack was aid at the enemy's weak points.
That shot had been aid at his heart. If Tim hadn't reacted quickly, twisting his body to deflect the shot, he likely would have been killed.
Fortunately, despite the injury, Tim managed to eliminate the remaining creatures, and he planned to escort Silas to safety. However, Silas insisted that they couldn't let the creatures succeed if they wanted to protect Earth's safety.
Reluctantly, Tim suppressed his pain and escorted Silas back to his office to retrieve a crucial, mysterious object.
Standing guard at the door, Tim gasped for breath, still feeling the imnse pain from the laser weapon. The energy from it not only caused intense physical pain but also had an abnormal effect on the cells and mind, making it excruciatingly painful, like bones being shattered.
"Got it,"
Silas quickly erged from the office, clutching a strange tal box.
"What's inside this?" Tim asked, eyeing the box with curiosity, trying to distract himself from the pain.
"It's an alien artifact. Now's not the ti to discuss it, but once we're safe, I'll tell you everything you want to know," Silas said urgently. He then grabbed Tim and began running toward another hallway.
At that mont, Silas's biggest concern wasn't anything else—it was his son, Victor.
He knew that Victor had been transford by the cube inside the box he was holding. If the attackers were after this artifact, they certainly wouldn't spare his son.
All Silas wanted now was to escape as quickly as possible and check if his son was in danger.
As they continued running, Silas turned to Tim and asked, "What about Batman and the Justice Society? Where are they?"
"Batman's in Gotham, and I'm not sure where the Justice Society mbers are right now," Tim answered, sweat pouring down from the pain.
"What!? Aren't they supposed to be at the STAR Labs?" Silas's eyes widened in disbelief, his steps becoming frantic.
Upon hearing Silas's unrestrained voice, Tim quickly covered his mouth, pressed his back to the wall, signaling Silas to remain quiet, and strained his ears to listen for any sounds.
After a mont, he determined that nothing was approaching, and he let out a sigh of relief before continuing.
"They're obviously not here. I ca to talk to you about your son joining the Teen Titans, but who knew there would be so many damn monsters here."
"Teen Titans?" Silas looked at Tim in confusion, having never heard of such a group.
"It's an organization for young heroes, like the Justice Society. You could think of it as a younger reserve team," Tim peeked around, checking the surroundings, then gestured for Silas to keep running.
"Hurry up, we'll talk later. The monsters are jamming the signals, I can't reach Batman or the Justice Society."
"What?! What are we going to do? There are hundreds of scientists here! Are we just going to watch them die at the hands of these alien creatures?" Silas's expression darkened.
"Don't worry. I heard gunfire earlier. The situation here must have escalated. The Justice Society heroes probably know about it already. They might even be on their way!"
Boom!!
Before Tim could finish, the ground in front of him exploded suddenly.
The powerful blast sent both of them flying backward. In an instant, they lost their balance and felt the world spinning before crashing heavily onto the ground and rolling a few tis.
Fortunately, due to the intense training Batman had put Tim through over the past two years, he quickly regained his composure after a brief mont of panic. He rolled to absorb the impact and half-knelt as he stood up again.
"What the—"
He tried to speak, but the sharp pain in his shoulder caused him to swallow his words.
Gripping his shoulder, Tim trembled as the wound he'd suffered earlier reopened, blood pouring from it.
Focusing his mind, Tim felt dizzy, but he forced himself to stay alert and looked up.
Through the thick smoke, he saw a huge hole in the lab floor, and not far ahead, a massive figure slowly erged from the haze.
Feeling the imnse pressure from the creature, Tim knew this was no re demon. With his current abilities, he wouldn't stand a chance against this being.
"Heh heh heh..."
A huge, grotesque hand tore through the mist, and the figure of the Steppenwolf erged, letting out a sinister laugh as it looked at the two fragile humans before it. Stretching out its hand, it spoke.
"Hand over the Mother Box. This is your final chance."
