Chapter 843: 288, Atlantic City Racing Club opens_3
.
In a private box on the other side of the third floor of Atlantic City Square, Donnie was chatting with the Vice President of the United States Calvin Coolidge, Secretary of State Charles Hughes, Minister of Comrce Herbert Hoover, Treasurer Andrew llon, Attorney General Harry D’Agostino, Chief of Staff of the Army General Pan Xing, President of Morgan Jack Morgan, and helmsman of the Rockefeller Family Old Rockefeller!
“If President Harding wants to hold a Cabinet eting right now, he would be scratching his head!”
Andrew llon joked.
The big shots present almost encapsulated half of President Harding’s cabinet mbers.
Donnie laughed and said, “In fact, President Harding called last night to complain that I had lured away his cabinet!”
Everyone burst into laughter upon hearing this.
In fact, Harding had originally planned to co, but due to the Teapot Do oil field scandal, his impression among the Arican public is plumting. Under such circumstances, Harding naturally couldn’t attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Atlantic City Racing Club!
“Donnie, looking at the people below, it seems like your Atlantic City Racing Club will also beco a sport that influences the Arican way of life!”
Secretary of State Charles Hughes said jokingly to Donnie with a laugh.
Although Charles Hughes had minimal contact with Donnie, they still had a good relationship. Like many Arican politicians, Charles Hughes started out as a lawyer.
In 1906, Charles Hughes defeated the yellow press magnate William Hearst and won the Governor of New York State for the Republican Party.
Later, he was appointed by Donnie’s stepfather-in-law William Howard Taft as the Chief Justice of the United States Supre Court, and even competed with Woodrow Wilson for the position of President, but ultimately, Charles Hughes lost to Woodrow Wilson.
Afterward, Charles Hughes returned to his legal profession until Harding beca President and appointed Hughes as Secretary of State!
Republican Party affiliation, a mber of the William Taft camp, all these beca the underlying reasons for Charles Hughes to establish a good relationship with Donnie!
Donnie laughed: “Aricans’ enjoynt of life is too scarce; we just want to add so more fun to the daily life of the Arican people!”
Minister of Comrce Herbert Hoover held up his wine glass and laughed, “If all rchants nationwide could think like Donnie, our Ministry of Comrce would have an easier ti!”
If Charles Hughes represents the traditional route of lawyers in Arican politics, then Herbert Hoover represents another route of Aricans entering politics—he transitioned from businessman to politician.
In his early years, Herbert Hoover graduated from Stanford University. After several years of trials and tribulations post-graduation, Hoover joined the British mining giant Burmah Oil Company and then went to the East. There, he earned his first pot of gold.
After returning from the East to the United Kingdom, Herbert Hoover beca a partner at Burmah Oil.
When World War I broke out, Herbert Hoover helped Aricans stranded in Europe return to the United States, starting to erge on the Arican political scene. He later established a relief committee in Belgium, providing food for millions of civilians in Belgium and the northern region of France, accumulating a significant reputation.
In light of this, Herbert Hoover was appointed by then-President Woodrow Johnson as the head of the United States Food Administration. After Harding beca President, Hoover was appointed Minister of Comrce, a Cabinet mber!
“Hoover, by saying that, are you reminding us to learn more from Donnie?”
Old Rockefeller joked.
Herbert Hoover laughed heartily and replied, “Mr. Rockefeller, I didn’t say that. By saying so you’ll make Donnie think I’m flattering him by killing with kindness!”
Donnie then said, “If Mr. Hoover, you could introduce more comrce to our New Jersey side, I’d be happy even if it’s killing with kindness!”
The group continued to joke around, like a gathering of old friends chatting together.
Soon, Fei Jackson, who was in charge of the Atlantic City Racing Club’s opening ceremony, ca in to remind Donnie that the ribbon-cutting ceremony was about to begin!
Therefore, Donnie, Coolidge, and Jack Morgan ca out of the box, while the rest remained. If they all went down to cut the ribbon, it would indeed create a sensation and bring more attention to the Atlantic City Racing Club, but it would also attract more criticism.
So, in the end, only the three of them cut the ribbon.
There’s not much to say about the ribbon-cutting ceremony; it was the sa old routine. After Donnie and the others completed the ribbon-cutting, colorful ribbons descended from the sky with motorboats.
The sound of applause covered all other noises.
This also signified that the first horse race of the Atlantic City Racing Club was about to begin.
Donnie and the others prepared to return to the box, but at this mont, Steve Cotting found Donnie. Although there was a smile on his face, Donnie could see that sothing had happened!
Donnie quietly spoke to Coolidge and Jack Morgan, then approached Steve Cotting: “What happened?”
Donnie really wanted to know who would be foolish enough to cause trouble for him at this ti!
Steve Cotting whispered, “Just now, John had so altercations with Al Capone from Chicago!”
Donnie frowned slightly: “To what extent?”
Steve Cotting continued, “Al Capone drew his gun!”
Donnie’s expression turned grim: “How are you guys doing your job, allowing soone to bring a gun in?”
Steve Cotting helplessly explained, “Al Capone ca with Johnny Torrio, so our people didn’t check them!”
“Is there any problem on John’s side?” Donnie inquired.
