Capítulo 1536: Chapter 555: MacArthur’s Counterattack
Douglas MacArthur left Donnie’s residence.
But Douglas MacArthur definitely wouldn’t concede so easily, after all, Douglas MacArthur is the de facto leader of the U.S. Army.
Moreover, with Douglas MacArthur’s prideful nature, he would never admit defeat to Donnie.
So upon returning to the Army General Staff, Douglas MacArthur summoned a colonel!
Vaughn Beilich!
“Colonel, I need to assign you an absolutely confidential mission, which concerns the pride and future of the U.S. Army!”
Douglas MacArthur earnestly told Vaughn Beilich.
Vaughn Beilich confidently said, “General, every mission of our security bureau is highly confidential!”
Douglas MacArthur nodded in satisfaction, pleased with his own foresight at this mont.
After assuming the position of United States Army Chief of Staff, Douglas MacArthur publicly promoted the modernization of the U.S. Army and potential future warfare.
At the sa ti, Douglas MacArthur was engaged in another task.
That was to quickly and completely take over the intelligence agency of the U.S. Army.
The U.S. Army Security Bureau!
Douglas MacArthur was well aware of the importance of intelligence to a leader.
Especially now with factions rampant within the U.S. Army, he needed to clearly understand the issues between these factions.
However, things haven’t been very smooth. Up until now, Douglas MacArthur has only brought the colonel of the operations division, Vaughn Beasley, under his command!
Other departnts are still not under his control.
“Recently, I’ve received nurous reports about collusion between officials and businessn within the procurent departnts of several units.
Especially with business dealings involving Ares Military Industry.
In addition, I personally suspect that Ares Military Industry possesses technology unknown to our U.S. Army.
I need you to thoroughly investigate these two matters.”
Vaughn Beasley hadn’t finished listening to Douglas MacArthur’s words when the confidence on his face faded.
Within the U.S. Army Security Bureau, there isn’t just the operations division that he’s a part of.
Several divisions exist, so of which investigate foreign military situations.
Others are responsible for dostic military situations.
Vaughn Beilich’s responsibility is the internal investigation of dostic troops.
This job is not inherently pleasing.
Because of the nature of this work, Vaughn Beilich has offended many military bigwigs, and if he wants to continue to stay securely in the U.S. Army.
He needs a powerful backing.
So when Douglas MacArthur approached him, he imdiately pledged his loyalty to Douglas MacArthur.
Yet now he didn’t expect his loyalty to result in being pushed into a pit by the other party.
“What? Do you have a problem?”
Douglas MacArthur asked upon seeing Vaughn Beilich’s silence.
There was naturally a problem!
“General, I want to ask, how extensive is this investigation?”
Vaughn Beilich didn’t answer Douglas MacArthur’s question but instead inquired of him.
Douglas MacArthur thought of the treatnt he just received at Donnie’s place and spoke coldly.
“I want to uncover all the rats with vested interests between the U.S. Army and Donnie.”
Douglas MacArthur knew what Vaughn Beilich was worried about just now.
If soone were to claim the U.S. Army is spotless, that would be impossible, and if he truly wanted to find everyone’s evidence of wrongdoing.
That would almost be tantamount to opposing the entire U.S. Army.
In such a scenario, even being the Chief of Staff of the Army wouldn’t hold sway.
Then, the only result for Vaughn Beilich would be to suddenly encounter an accident and die.
Therefore, Douglas MacArthur told Vaughn Beilich that he only needed the list of those with vested interests with Donnie Block’s Ares Military Industry.
Of course, solid evidence is required.
“So, General, how do you plan to deal with them?”
Vaughn Beilich knew his questions were impolite now, but there was no choice. If he took on this task from Douglas MacArthur.
It would be like dancing on the knife’s edge with butter on his soles.
Douglas MacArthur indeed didn’t like Vaughn Beilich’s attitude.
But he had no choice.
Douglas MacArthur’s staff was in the Philippines, and now in Washington, he could trust hardly anyone.
Now he also understood the danger of what he was asking Vaughn Beilich to do.
So after a mont’s silence, Douglas MacArthur explained his situation to Vaughn Beilich.
“Since I took office, I’ve started to weed out those whose minds are filled only with interests, without the pride of the U.S. Army, and most of these people had already been corrupted by Donnie Block.
My actions naturally made Donnie Block very displeased.
Therefore, in this event of retired veterans besieging Washington, Donnie Block has constantly been attacking my tactics.
Their aim is to remove from the position of Chief of Staff of the Army.
If I fall, then you, Colonel Vaughn Beilich, must be very clear about your fate!
So now I must do sothing, and rest assured, I’m not genuinely targeting those people, I just want to gather evidence, then have leverage to negotiate with Donnie.”
