While Donnie and Robert were discussing the matter of the Cadillac, Edgar Hoover at FBI headquarters was in a state of extre panic!
The death of Trey Layman was naturally the work of Edgar Hoover.
Edgar Hoover was sitting on the sofa in his office, his face sullen.
He actually knew all along that, even though he had imdiately ordered Trey Layman to stop tailing Donnie and remove those gunn from Washington, it would still be possible to trace back to Trey Layman.
This was Edgar Hoover’s confidence in the FBI he had founded!
So when Edgar Hoover first enlisted Layman for this task, he had already decided that this person could not be left alive!
Now with Donnie having been ambushed, Edgar Hoover’s plan was disrupted. He still harbored so hope that the FBI could find the real ambushers before they traced back to Trey Layman.
But clearly, that did not happen!
Earlier, upon hearing that Layman was being held in solitary confinent, Hoover knew Layman’s situation had been exposed.
In the current climate, Hoover could not allow any more problems that could harm him to arise outside.
So Edgar Hoover imdiately decided to eliminate Trey Layman.
This task was not difficult for Hoover, even if he didn’t trust anyone within the FBI.
Hoover first privately contacted the person responsible for delivering water to the interrogation room. Learning that it was for Layman, he slipped so prepared poison into the water cup when the person’s attention was diverted.
After the water was delivered, Hoover lured this person out from FBI headquarters with a fake call and killed him on the way.
And with this, the matter was settled!
Though Hoover believed he had executed this flawlessly, he still reviewed the entire affair, leaving no stone unturned that might lead back to him!
What mattered most to Hoover now was to eliminate everyone who knew of his connection with Trey Layman!
Initially, Hoover did not support Layman directly, but conveyed certain ssages to him through unknown channels.
So the only person aware of Hoover’s relationship with Layman was the bartender at Layman’s underground bar!
Understanding this, Hoover took a pistol from his drawer and exited his office.
He ran into Rhode Granger, just returning from Donnie’s place.
With Layman assassinated at FBI headquarters without leaving evidence, Granger’s first suspicion pointed to Edgar Hoover!
"Director, heading out?"
Granger asked Hoover with a smile.
Hoover knew if he said he was leaving now, it would surely arouse Granger’s suspicion.
"There aren’t many who could eliminate Layman so quietly in the bureau under such circumstances, so I’d like to investigate this matter!"
Granger asked with a smile, "Director, you already know about Layman?"
Hoover replied coldly, "Rhode, I know what you’re thinking, but you should know, nothing in the bureau escapes , and I, more than anyone, did not want Layman dead."
Granger nodded, whether he truly believed Hoover or not was only known to him.
"Since you’re aware, sir, I have a few questions for you, do you have ti?"
Edgar, despite wanting to imdiately eliminate the bartender, nodded, "Sure!"
The two returned to Hoover’s office.
"Sir, who do you think could’ve done this?" Granger asked directly, sitting opposite Hoover.
Hoover said calmly, "First, we can rule out the lower-level ones, they wouldn’t have the capability to do this quietly. Next, those on assignnts outside are also no concern, they lack the opportunity, so we’re left with those few dozens in the bureau, and I think a thorough investigation will reveal so clues!"
Granger frowned, "Wouldn’t that cause too much disturbance, and these people have significant influence in our bureau, directly investigating them might incite resentnt!"
Hoover actually desired this outco; even though Granger had Donnie’s support now, his hold in the FBI was unstable, and this investigation would surely turn many within the FBI against him, making it impossible for Granger to control the FBI!
But Hoover couldn’t say this, "That depends on your priorities; I imagine you wouldn’t trust such a matter to easily, hence I can’t offer more specific advice!"
Granger frowned, even at this juncture, Hoover remained a formidable opponent.
"Additionally," Hoover mused, "I have a thought, whether you heed it is up to you!"
"Please, go ahead!"
"Isn’t it possible that Layman had nothing to do with Mr. Block’s ambush? Their current actions might just be to divert our investigation."
Hoover paused here, then continued, "Of course, this is just my personal speculation, whether you consider it, that’s your decision!"
