Zara

"Of course," Alpha Kane grumbled. "I’ve sent many of my warriors from other cities here; so of the best are already on their way. From what I hear, they’re ahead of schedule."

"Kate..." I began, but Alpha Kane cut off with a low growl.

"I’ll deal with her when this is all over."

"She might not have known. They might have let it slip, knowing she was planning to escape." I ran out, narrowing my eyes as I approached the house. "They might have planned all this to gain an advantage."

"Or Kate could be a spy," Alpha Kane snapped.

"She could be." I agreed. "But first, we need to hear her out."

Six figures stood in front of the house, four of them dressed in dark, their postures tense and frozen. My pounding heart sank as I caught sight of the grim faces of Ryan and Sophia. The lights were on in the house, and from a distance, I could see the worried face of my dad peering out the living room window.

I knew my father was itching to get outside and protect his son, and I prayed to the Moon Goddess that he would stay put. Years ago, my father had shattered his knee, and though it had healed, it still gave him trouble from ti to ti.

Ryan had a will like fire and obsidian, a force to be reckoned with, but even that remained within, most likely to keep my father from throwing himself out the door.

Both Ryan and Sophia stood their ground against the four Brown Wolves. They held sothing in their hands that reflected the dim light of the streetlights. This ti, they were ready: with silver-plated knives.

Ryan fought two of them, but his movents were slower than usual. I saw the pain flicker across his face, and my gaze dropped to the scarlet liquid trickling down his thigh. If Ryan had been wounded by one of them, his wolf would have been suppressed, leaving only strength and speed.

A flash of blond hair, lighter than any human I’d ever seen before. Those eyes, Marcus’s, t mine, and a smile appeared on his face.

Sophia fought them with a ferocity I’d never seen before, her face clouded with emotion, a thin trickle of blood running down her head. Behind her, under the dim streetlight, five more brown wolves stalked, keeping their eyes on Sophia and Ryan. They’d undoubtedly slipped past the patrol, avoiding the fight around our town.

Marcus stood apart from the fray, looking around with a snaky smile on his face. I was disgusted by his appearance; I couldn’t understand how I could ever be attracted to such a monster. Scar... Let the mark prickled my skin, as if scolding for such thoughts.

"I’ll fucking kill him," Alpha Kane growled, swerving to the side of the road.

We jumped out of the car and ran up to Sophia and Ryan. Alpha Kane grabbed one of them from behind, knocking him off Ryan. With a sharp movent, Kane’s claws lengthened and...They clawed at the wolf’s throat. Thick blood sprayed onto his face, filling the air with a tallic sll.

I leaped at one of the wolves, ducking as he swung his knife at my face. Ti seed to slow down, and I saw my reflection in the smooth surface of the blade as it whistled past my face.

"Don’t touch Zara!" Marcus growled at the brown wolf, who continued to fight for their lives.

The wolf fighting listened to Marcus and tried to restrain . With the wolf’s body close to mine, I could easily twist and maneuver until my elongated fangs sank into his neck. The sensation was strangely pleasurable, like sinking my teeth into a pat of butter.

Recoiling from the taste, I spat a chunk of his throat onto the road and watched him fall to his knees.

In the midst of the fight, sothing changed. Ryan no longer had the upper hand over the brown wolf and collapsed to the ground, the leather handle of the knife protruding from his stomach. Sophia rushed to Ryan’s defense, but still stood her ground against the other two brown wolves.

My head whipped around as the front door of the house burst open and Dad ca running down the steps.

"Dad!" I scread, every nerve in my body ablaze. "Don’t!"

My body moved of its own accord, pushing forward until I collided with the wolf stalking Ryan. Nova’s power flowed through , dulling the sensation in my limbs. My claws and fangs lengthened of their own accord as I swung at the brown wolf in a wild rage.

Growling and snarling echoed through the quiet street, and I realized those primal sounds were coming from my own lips.

My father wrapped his arms around Ryan’s torso, glaring murderously at the remaining. Seizing the opportunity, my father dragged Ryan down the sidewalk onto the porch.

Sothing hot and sticky ran down my face, and a coppery sll filled my nose. The brown wolf beneath was a bloody mass of torn flesh and muscle. His face was indistinguishable, though I knew he had been handso in life.

I jumped away from his body, ready to leap to the next one, when a sharp pain lanced through my body. There was a tear about three inches long in the dress Sophia had given . A leather knife handle protruded from the hole, with a single ruby embedded in it.

Marcus t my gaze, horror filling his murderous gaze. Alpha Kane turned sharply, as if my pain had physically touched him. While they both stared at the knife protruding from my stomach, my gaze was fixed on Sophia.

She was fighting two brown wolves, the struggle in her eyes flickering and fading, as if she’d been doused with cold water. Another brown wolf lunged forward, stabbing her in the back, sending her to her knees.

Our gazes t, and in them I heard words that refused to leave her lips. "Forgive !"

"Stop!" growled a voice I hadn’t heard before.

The brown wolves seed to hear the voice and froze, their eyes fixed on the approaching figure.
