Agreeing to Create Bad Games, What the Hell Is ‘Titanfall’? Chapter 281: The Hymn of Humanity Is the Hymn of Courage
“Holy crap... what’s the difference between this and looking for death?”
Standing beneath the towering cliff!
Dawei swallowed nervously.
Before him, the mountain face was nearly vertical, a sheer precipice.
Although there were occasional cracks or jagged rocks jutting out, from this angle, it was enough to inspire fear just by looking.
Not to ntion!
This was rock climbing without any protection!
Yes, as an extre sports ga, Peak Kingdom’s climbing equipnt was arguably the simplest—
A pair of fingerless gloves, a waist pouch filled with anti-slip magnesium powder, and a pair of climbing shoes.
That was it.
No safety ropes, no steel cables, not a single rock bolt anchor on the entire mountain from bottom to top.
Just relying on hands and feet, powerful core strength, and sharp route selection to conquer one deadly overhang after another.
Of course!
Although Peak Kingdom had basically achieved indistinguishable realism in terms of technology and industrial level.
Not only did it perfectly simulate and enhance the five senses through Yiyou X2’s full-sensory assist technology, Golden Wind’s own top-tier motion assist system also temporarily granted players extrely high athletic talents, helping them perform more perfect fancy moves.
But!
The “fatigue” caused by climbing and other sports could not yet be simulated by the motion-sensing pod.
No other sports ga could do this either, and Golden Wind had no better solution at present.
Therefore, Peak Kingdom could only replace “fatigue” with a “stamina bar” in parallel.
As progress deepened, the athletes played by the players would gradually feel exhausted, and the players themselves would experience weakening limbs and diminishing strength.
This change also promoted another positive chanism—
That is, “choosing reasonable routes and moves.”
Take downhill skiing for example—
Admittedly, flashy technical moves like grabs in snowboarding or spins in alpine skiing could greatly increase your score.
But those moves also consud stamina.
In a race, no matter how high your score, you still have to cross the finish line for it to count.
If you perform too many fancy moves along the way, you risk failing just before the finish line.
Unless
You can find a more stamina-saving route to compensate for the energy spent on tricks.
Or take parachuting for example—
You can choose a difficult move like flipping the parachute to increase your technical score,
But frequent technical moves also consu a lot of stamina, causing poor route control and missing virtual checkpoints.
Unless you can precisely judge the optimal flight path and perform flips at the right mont.
And now!
The climbing project that Dawei and SuperCat were doing together was just like this!
Although theoretically, climbing had few fancy moves—almost none—
Its technical moves were not few.
The greatest difficulty in this extre sport was how to use reasonable technical moves to find the most efficient route to the summit before stamina ran out.
“Just try it. Anyway, if you screw up, you can still respawn.”
Clap! Clap!
Scooping so anti-slip magnesium powder, SuperCat clapped his hands excitedly, approached the overhang, grabbed the rock hold, firmly planted his feet on footholds, and began to climb upward.
The rough rock, aided by the magnesium powder, was firmly grasped in his palm.
This feeling of regaining strength made SuperCat’s eyes light up.
It had been so long.
Since falling ill, his body had only gotten worse.
With frequent chemotherapy and various dications, he gradually changed from a strong young man into a skinny patient who needed help even to get around.
Fortunately, his brain and heart were still relatively healthy, allowing him to barely pass the motion pod’s health check.
And now,
When his healthy and intact in-ga avatar once again felt this imnse power, waves of emotion surged within him.
As expected.
Health is the greatest wealth in life.
Thinking this, SuperCat smiled quietly, took a deep breath, tightly gripped the protruding rock, wedged his knee into a crevice, then turned to look down and to his right at Dawei:
“Are you even going? I’m already a quarter up, and you’re still there?!”
At this mont!
Dawei was trembling, sticking close to the cliff like a turtle flattened against the rock, afraid to move an inch:
“Stop bragging. Do you know the story of the tortoise and the hare? I’m letting you lead for a bit. I’ll pass you soon.”
“Really? I don’t believe it.”
Hearing this, SuperCat stifled a laugh, looked at the terrain ahead, then glanced down at Dawei:
“Hey, buddy, watch this.”
Speaking, SuperCat pointed to a rock protrusion about seven or eight centiters long, up and to his left.
“Watch closely,” SuperCat pursed his lips, “Dad’s gonna show you sothing big.”
“Holy crap!”
Dawei’s body shook violently, nearly falling off the cliff:
“Can you even poop while rock climbing in this ga? Are you crazy or what?”
SuperCat: …
“Are you freaking stupid?!”
SuperCat was both speechless and annoyed, a black line on his forehead:
“I ant I’m going to swing from here to that hold over there! Not poop, damn it!”
“Huh?”
Hearing this, Dawei was even more shocked than before!
After all, that rock protrusion was two body lengths away from SuperCat and diagonally above!
This ant SuperCat wanted to perform a completely unprotected, diagonal leap on a ninety-degree cliff overhang, perfectly grabbing that rock while keeping his body from swinging wildly!
“You’re full of it!”
Dawei shouted in disbelief:
“If you can fly over there, I’ll buy you grilled fish!”
“Hey! You said it!”
SuperCat perked up—he loved grilled fish the most:
“Cheating is for dogs!”
“If you’re cheating, you’re my dog,”
Dawei said confidently:
“Just don’t fall and hit , that’s all.”
Saying this, Dawei pressed his body tightly against the cliff, afraid SuperCat might fall and take him down too.
Hiss—whoosh—
Hiss—whoosh—
For a while, the voice chat in their team fell silent, only SuperCat’s deep breathing sounded slowly.
The bustling sounds...
The wind blew through the valley, passing over SuperCat’s body.
The towering trees rustled below, and the crisp chirping of forest birds was pleasantly lodious.
At this mont,
SuperCat felt as if the world had shrunk to only himself.
The ga’s opening slogan vividly appeared in his mind—
[The Hymn of Humanity Is the Hymn of Courage]
“Ha—!”
A powerful shout echoed through the cliff and valley!
SuperCat’s body sprang like a nimble snow leopard, leaping toward the only rock protrusion on the smooth cliff face.
Crack!
Falling rocks scattered, clouds of white magnesium powder fluttered through the air.
An eagle called from the cliff top.
Snap!
Whoosh!
Clack!!!
Strong, knuckled hands tightly gripped the rock, while climbing shoes rubbed against the cliff, producing a frictional deceleration sound!
And when all the sounds suddenly fell silent!
Dawei slowly opened his eyes and looked up to see SuperCat holding the rock steadily, feet spread for support, looking like a gecko clinging to a starry wall. He exhaled deeply.
“Grilled fish! Dawei! Grilled—fish—!!!”
Flapping his arms excitedly, SuperCat’s shout startled a flock of birds in the forest below, their calls echoing through the valley, also making Dawei’s nose tingle with emotion:
“Alright, alright, alright! Fine! Damn, you’re aweso!”
Unrestrained excitent!
Challenging the limits!
From dostic to international!
From players to strears!
The release of Peak Kingdom had undoubtedly caused a huge ripple in the sports ga world and even the entire gaming industry!
Yiyou X2’s full-sensory assist technology was so delicate!
In the offshore surfing competition, players listened to the roaring, crashing giant waves behind them, slled the salty sea air swirling everywhere, and felt adrenaline spike through the misty spray!
In the wingsuit flying race, players heard the roaring wind rushing past their ears, slled the crisp sweetness of rain on a mountain, and felt the true aning of the hymn of courage amid their rapid flight!
The unparalleled full-sensory assist technology was displayed to the fullest, causing countless players to scream in awe!
At the sa ti, Golden Wind’s motion assist technology was equally stunning!
In the ridge downhill race, those bold, breathtaking backflips and spins were so wild they left people gasping!
In the parachuting gliding race, fearless flips and rolls riding the wind were so terrifying they made people shudder and scream!
In downhill skiing at speeds up to two hundred kiloters per hour, one player after another tumbled and spun, kicking up endless flying snow!
On towering cliffs, players used hands and feet in unimaginable extre postures to seek even higher peaks.
......
That night.
As dusk fell, the streets were bustling with pedestrians.
Sated from food and drink, Dawei pushed SuperCat’s wheelchair down the street, watching neon lights flicker and people rush by.
The rolling sound of the wheelchair was slow and steady.
“Dawei.”
Crossing a traffic light, SuperCat suddenly spoke.
Dawei raised an eyebrow slightly:
“Hm?”
After a brief silence, SuperCat smiled softly: “I’m happy today. Thank you.”
“...Then how about a kiss for ?”
Dawei laughed as he pushed SuperCat across the pedestrian crossing.
Hearing this, SuperCat chuckled too, then took a deep breath, as if trying to hold onto the crisp winter air:
“Being able to play a ga like this before I go... it’s really great...”
Yes.
Although it was only a short half-day—five or six hours.
But thanks to the ga’s Peak Eight Events challenge rule that allowed players to start with any event.
They had set foot in the barren, vast Utah in the United States, witnessing fearless challengers traversing narrow ridges covered in jagged rocks.
They climbed to the summit of Mount Everest, watching players leap down thousands of ters from ski jumps, opening parachutes while flying through intersecting snowy mountains.
They passed through xico’s Swallow Cave and the Cortes Sea, witnessing the narrow, green-hell-like Swallow Cave and marveling at the towering waves rolling in the erald sea.
They toured Tiann Mountain’s divine natural arch and the perilous Angel Falls.
Though they did not attempt challenges, there was no doubt—
The ga’s realistic scenery was truly breathtaking, showcasing nature’s marvels and the fearless courage to challenge it.
And among the Peak Eight Events!
The one that enchanted and attracted SuperCat the most was the Alps.
The pure white, flawless, otherworldly snowy mountains resembled a heavenly palace above the clouds, shining with a celestial radiance like paradise.
Especially at sunset.
The golden-red winter sun would tint the snowy peaks with a warm, reddish-gold outline.
The majestic scene felt like being in the heavens, impossible to leave.
“Ahh,”
Thinking of this, SuperCat sighed with satisfaction but also regret:
“If I ever get the chance, I really want to see the Alps...”
Behind him.
Dawei said nothing.
He didn’t say things like “You’ll be able to see the Alps in Switzerland once you get better.”
Many tis, when a fact is already set and there’s no hope left, brothers often choose silent understanding.
Dawei was silent because he knew it was impossible.
And SuperCat was silent because he knew it too.
After all, when he gave up his last desperate fight, moved out of the hospital, and embraced the world one last ti,
The Alps had already beco an unreachable dream for him.
Silence.
Long silence.
SuperCat adjusted his black cat-ear knit hat, turned to look at Dawei:
“Help write a review for the ga later.”
“Just say—”
......
SuperCat’s Positive Review—
This is my last player review. I’m lucky to have played such a ga in my final days and felt such a breath of freedom.
Although I won’t see future updates, and no one has yet completed the Peak Eight Events challenge, I believe everyone who sings the hymn of courage will succeed.
I really love GW’s gas. They’ve soothed many things inside I couldn’t express, letting feel what freedom looks like.
If there’s a next life, I’d really want to see the Alps.
Finally, good luck everyone!
The hymn of humanity is the hymn of courage!
Thank you, Sam; thank you, Golden Wind.
[PS: I’m SuperCat’s real-life friend. At 2:30 a.m. today, SuperCat’s soul has gone to the Alps, a heaven-like dream. Thank you for the emotion and shock this ga brought us. I hope SuperCat is doing well up there. Keep fighting, everyone!]
