KALIA

"Did you have a good ti tonight?" Darren asked as we made our way towards the car that was parked at the entrance waiting for us.

His hands were wrapped firmly around my waist and I could breathe in his manly scent as I was draped so close to him.

The scent of his wolf was too prominent and sohow, it burned my insides.

"I know that functions like these aren’t really your thing and I’m sorry if maybe you felt out of place or uncomfortable here." He went further to apologize.

Even though I never really wanted to co here, I was still grateful that I did because I had achieved sothing good tonight.

Callum had never taken out in all the year that we were married in my previous life. He never even wanted the world to know that we were married.

If he had the chance to, he probably would’ve locked up and held captive because he was embarrassed of .

Whereas, Darren on the other hand was kind enough to take here even though we weren’t really married or mated to each other.

He was a good man but I still don’t know the reason why he didn’t want to get romantically involved with any woman. Was there perhaps a reason why he never got married?

"With ti, I’d guarantee that you’d get used to it pretty soon." He added.

"By the way, did Callum say anything to you while I was away? He looked like he was about to chew you up and spit you out in pieces."

I tilted my head to a side. "On the contrary, I think it was quite the opposite. I simply reminded him about the things that he never wanted to be reminded of and I’m certain that it struck a nerve."

"I’m happy that you’re learning to stand up for yourself Kalia." He paused, letting go of my waist to face completely. "I’m quite proud of you."

We arrived at the place where our car was parked and he opened up the car door for .

When I was settled in, he joined over at the other side. "So I take it that Liana was the important client you wanted to score a business deal with?" I asked, trying to make small talk.

He nodded his head in response. "Yes. Her late father owns a construction company which was later passed down to one of his children and for the longest of ti, we’ve been trying to score a deal with them."

"You see, I’m working on building another hotel around the area and her company is one of the best construction companies in the whole country." He explained to with utmost sincerity.

"Getting a deal with them is almost never possible but I’m glad that we were able to pull it off tonight." He smiled at . "That was the highlight of the entire evening."

It sounded a bit new and strange hearing him tell about work and his plans. To be honest, this was how i’ve always envisioned my marriage to be.

I wanted a safe space where my husband would be this comfortable enough to tell about his work and plans.

I wanted to be so involved in Callum’s life. I wanted him to be the woman that he would be very proud of.

I was willingly to sacrifice my life for his happiness because that’s how much I loved him.

It might even sound strange but I considered him my god at one point. I felt like I had finally achieved sothing worthwhile when I got married to him.

I thought that he was my savior, my happily ever after. How wrong and stupid I must’ve been.

"Kalia," He placed his hands on mine and I flinched. He looked worried and I felt bad that I had reacted the way I did. "I’m sorry if I scared you. I honestly didn’t an to."

"No. It’s okay. I was just thinking that’s all." I assured him. "I wanted to ask a question though."

He gave permission to speak with a nod of his head.

"Why is Callum hell bent on signing a deal with her company too? If both companies belong to your father, isn’t it a win for both of you no matter whose side she picks?"

"I personally never had a problem with whoever she picks but my half brother tends to make a competition out of everything." He said with a deep sigh.

"He challenged to a bet that whoever wins her over would get half the shares of the other’s company so I agreed."

So not only was he screwed over but he’d lose half his shares as well? This night just keeps getting better and better with every passing minute.

"I can’t believe that he was that childish to the point of betting sothing like this." I said with head shake. He must probably be regretting it so badly right now.

"Liana working with would automatically an that whatever project he’s working on will be on hold until mine is finished because we cannot handle two major projects at the sa ti."

"If he’s not patient enough then he would go for soone else but knowing him, he wouldn’t." He shifted on his seat and my eyes followed his every move as I found myself staring a little longer than I was supposed to.

I’ve always known that Darren was a handso man but most tis, I find to believe that he was indeed real.

"You’re staring." He pointed out and I looked away.

"I wasn’t staring." I lied through my teeth. "I was just watching you speak and that’s two entirely different things."

"So..." I cleared my throat. "What’s this hotel going to be all about? I’m quite curious because I don’t even know what you do when you literally know everything about now."

He faced . "Do you want to know more about ?" He asked but I didn’t respond.

"You specifically said in the contract that we should maintain our personal space so I didn’t really think that you’d be interested in finding out about what I do."

"I wasn’t interested at first but then after attending tonight’s party, I got a little curious being around all those people and it made realize that I don’t know anything." I said to him with a sad smile.

"My father never allowed to be a part of his company because I wasn’t his biological child. He gave those rights to Celyn instead so I didn’t know anything about a business and how it’s run." I smiled as I continued.

"While Celyn was making waves in his company as his child, I was being prepared to be married off to Callum. Back then, I didn’t think of it as anything because I had always loved Callum and I thought that life with him was all I ever wanted but..."

"I understand." Darren whispered softly. "And it’s not your fault that he decided to go on with the path he chose. You did your best as his fiance so you should never bla yourself for that okay?"

I nodded at his words.

"And you have now. At least for the period that we are partnered in this fake relationship, you’re free to ask about anything you don’t know or understand. I promise that I’ll do my best to answer all of them."

"And why would you do that for soone like ?"

"Because like it or not, you’re getting married to now and I can’t refuse you even if I wanted to." He answered before falling back to his seat.

He can’t refuse ? What does that even an? Why couldn’t he refuse ? We weren’t even close to begin with and he was just my ex-fiancé’s brother.

His words sounded a little bit strange but I pried myself not to think too much about it.

We arrived ho and Darren stepped out of the car to open the door for . I always wondered why he goes out of his way to do that when the driver was willing to do so on his behalf.

"I bet you can’t wait to get out of your clothes. You look very exhausted." Richard said with a grin on his face and I couldn’t help but laugh.

He was right though. I was very exhausted and I’ve been standing on these shoes for a very long ti. I needed to pull these clothes off of as soon as possible.

"This is the first ti I’ve heard you laugh." He held out his hands to and I took it gratefully. "You look very beautiful when you laugh so please do it often. I love seeing it."

I shied my eyes away. There was nothing worth making laugh. Why would I laugh and find humour around when my whole life has been rough with nothing to smile about.

"Darren!" Moira rushed out of the mansion, running towards us as fast as her feet could carry her.

We paused in our steps, waiting for her to catch up to us. Darren’s inquisitive expression was also the sa look I had on my face as well.

"Slow down Moira. What could be chasing you from the mansion that’s making you so restless?"

"I couldn’t reach out to you earlier but I think there’s a little problem right now—"

"Just tell what it is." He snapped, cutting her short. His forehead creased with worry.

"Your parents are—"

"So you finally decided to show up after all." An unfamiliar voice bood from afar.

I looked up to see both his parents standing there at the entrance waiting for us. I recognized the Alpha King but this was my first ti seeing his mother. She looked pissed and almost fuming with anger.

Oh no! This wasn’t exactly how I planned on ending my night.

Darren grabbed my hands firmly as he led towards them. "Mother I—"

"Don’t bring that woman close to Darren!" His mother grumbled angrily forcing us to stop in our tracks.

"I will not have that worthless and shaless woman stand in front of . No Darren, I will never allow it!" She deadpanned.
