Eliza Sutton pulled a stack of cash from her purse, took Sean Hughes’s hand, and placed the money in it. "Here, take this."
Sean Hughes stared blankly at the bills in his hand. "Eliza, what is this supposed to an?"
"It’s for you to go to the hospital and get your head checked. So young, yet so gravely ill. It’s truly a pity." ’Where does he get the nerve, saying sothing like that to my face?’
’Eight billion, he says.’
’Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.’
The expression on Sean Hughes’s face stiffened. This ti, even he, as dense as he could be, understood that Eliza Sutton was insulting him.
Sean Hughes frowned, displeased. "Eliza Sutton, what’s with this attitude? Act like this, and you’ll make unhappy."
His voice carried a clear warning, telling Eliza Sutton to back off.
"Oh."
Eliza Sutton said coolly, "Then please move. Your being angry shouldn’t stop from eating."
Seeing that Sean Hughes wasn’t moving, Eliza Sutton simply moved to another sofa and continued to enjoy her food.
Sean Hughes’s expression was incredibly foul, a hint of disbelief still lingering on his face.
It wasn’t that he couldn’t accept being put in his place.
He just couldn’t accept being put in his place by Eliza Sutton.
In Sean Hughes’s eyes, Eliza Sutton would forever be that pathetic, disheveled girl who practically knelt before him, begging him to honor their engagent and take her ho as his wife.
Sean Hughes was furious. Just as he was about to force Eliza Sutton to apologize, Sherry Caldwell rushed over.
"Sean, you have to co quick! Sothing’s happened to Alia Sutton! She’s been thrown into the swimming pool!"
"What? Who did Alia Sutton piss off?"
Forgetting all about Eliza Sutton, Sean Hughes rushed off with Sherry Caldwell.
A crowd had already gathered around the banquet hall’s swimming pool.
The banquet was crawling with reporters, and they weren’t the only ones taking pictures—so of the guests were too. The air buzzed with discussion.
"Isn’t that the Sutton family’s second daughter? Who threw her in?"
"I saw him. I think it was one of President Lockwood’s bodyguards."
"President Lockwood? Isn’t he her brother-in-law? Why the public humiliation?"
"Whether he shows her any courtesy or not probably depends on what his dear sister-in-law did to deserve it."
They snickered, their words dripping with scorn.
With a dark expression, Sean Hughes pushed through the crowd to the edge of the pool, where he saw Alia Sutton struggling in the water, her clothes in disarray.
Alia Sutton’s gown was a delicate design, and now that it was soaked, it clung to her body like a second skin, revealing every curve. To make matters worse, the gown was floor-length. In her panic, she kept stepping on the hem, causing her to fall back into the water repeatedly. She was a pathetic sight.
Sherry Caldwell: "Alia, don’t be afraid! Sean is coming to save you!"
Alia Sutton saw him too and imdiately cried out, "Sean, you’re here! Hurry, save !"
Now, even though Sean Hughes found the situation humiliating, he had no choice but to bite the bullet and jump in to save her.
Seeing this, the reporters’ shutters flashed even more frantically, capturing the pair’s pathetic predicant.
A muscle in Sean Hughes’s jaw twitched. He ordered his n to make the reporters delete the photos.
Saul Reynolds also heard the news and hurried over. He imdiately had a lounge arranged for the two of them and had fresh clothes sent over.
Only after changing out of her soaking wet gown did Alia Sutton finally compose herself. She covered her face and began to sob quietly.
Sean Hughes’s brows were tightly knit, his patience worn thin. "Alright, that’s enough crying! Didn’t you say you were going to the restroom? How on earth did you end up being thrown into a pool by Shane Lockwood?"
"I... I don’t know..." Alia Sutton couldn’t possibly admit what really happened. A mont ago, she’d seized an opportunity to slip into Shane Lockwood’s VIP lounge, but he’d ordered her to get lost without even glancing at her.
Unwilling to waste the hard-won opportunity, Alia Sutton decided to go all in. She pulled down her shoulder strap and threw herself into his arms in a blatant attempt at seduction.
’n can never refuse a beautiful woman, after all.’
Alia Sutton believed she had so charm, but Shane Lockwood simply threw her to the floor and called for a bodyguard. "Sober her up."
And then, she was thrown into the swimming pool.
Rembering how everyone had been pointing and whispering about her, Alia Sutton wished she could find a hole to crawl into and disappear.
She had never been so humiliated in her entire life!
"It was my sister..." Alia Sutton said, tears streaming down her face. "You know my sister’s status is different now. She resents us, and now that she has President Lockwood backing her, she won’t let us off the hook. She had soone throw into the pool just to humiliate and vent her anger!"
If Alia Sutton had made any other excuse, Sean Hughes might have been suspicious. But this reason? He believed it instantly.
After all, Sean Hughes couldn’t accept the idea that Eliza Sutton truly no longer cared about him.
Sean Hughes’s expression softened slightly, but his brow furrowed deeply again when he rembered the gossip from the other guests.
"They’re saying you tried to seduce Shane Lockwood."
Perhaps a crisis truly can bring out a person’s hidden potential.
Alia Sutton, for one, was suddenly incredibly quick-witted.
Alia Sutton said, "Sean, have you forgotten? Shane Lockwood... he can’t perform. I’ve only ever had eyes for you, you know that. But even if I were to do sothing like that, I wouldn’t pick a man who’s impotent. That’s not seduction, that’s just asking for trouble."
Sean Hughes actually believed her.
’As a man... if roles were reversed... if I were a man who couldn’t perform and a woman tried to seduce ... no matter how beautiful she was, I wouldn’t react well.’
’It’s no different from rubbing salt in the wound!’
Seeing her advantage, Alia Sutton pressed on, grabbing Sean Hughes’s sleeve and sobbing, "Sean, I know I’ve made so mistakes lately, but you have to believe . My love for you is real."
Alia Sutton’s pitiful, tear-streaked face made Sean Hughes’s heart soften.
He turned and hugged Alia Sutton, his voice gentle. "Silly girl. Of course I understand how you feel."
Alia Sutton buried her face in Sean Hughes’s chest and sobbed loudly, but inwardly, she let out a long sigh of relief. ’Thank God I managed to calm him down.’
...
On the way back, Eliza Sutton rode in the sa car as Shane Lockwood.
Eliza Sutton sat in the back, occasionally glancing at Shane Lockwood.
Shane Lockwood: "If you have sothing to say, just say it."
"I don’t have anything to say."
Shane Lockwood sneered. "Should I get you a mirror so you can see how shifty you look?"
Er...
Eliza Sutton: "I was just curious."
"Hm?"
Eliza Sutton asked in a gossipy tone, "Mr. Lockwood, did Alia Sutton really try to seduce you? What was that like? Alia Sutton is considered sowhat attractive. Were you not even a little bit tempted?"
SCREECH—
The black Bugatti Veyron screeched to a halt.
Imdiately, the car door was opened, and Eliza Sutton stumbled out.
Before she could even regain her footing, the car sped off, leaving her in a cloud of exhaust.
Eliza Sutton grumbled resentfully, "It was just a little gossip. Was it really worth getting that angry over?"
