Eva Monroe choked up. "Isla Sutton, you’ve suffered."
"No... How have I suffered?"
"Still trying to hide it from ? You went to prison in Cedric Sutton’s place. That was suffering, but you ca out with incredible dical skills. Isla Sutton, I have a brain. I know how much you must have gone through in that place to learn all that. It’s all my fault. I was powerless to get you out back then, and now I’m the one who needs your help. I feel so guilty."
Eliza Sutton froze, her expression softening. A gentleness she rarely showed filled her eyes as she hugged Eva Monroe. "Who says? The little bit of weight I gained in prison was all thanks to the food you sent ."
"Weight?" Eva Monroe reached out a playful hand and gave Eliza Sutton’s firm chest a squeeze. "Well then, I guess I’m a true saint."
Eliza Sutton: "...You little pervert!"
...
Alia Sutton returned to the Sutton estate from the hospital.
When she arrived, Harrison Sutton was seeing Mrs. Owens out.
Harrison Sutton called out to her. "Alia, co say hello to Mrs. Owens."
"Hello, Mrs. Owens," Alia Sutton said sweetly.
She knew Mrs. Owens, the matriarch of the Owens family. In Seabourne, the Owens family was no less influential than the Hughes family; they were another well-known and powerful clan.
Mrs. Owens smiled kindly at Alia Sutton. "This must be the younger Miss Sutton. Just as Chairman Sutton said, she’s very beautiful and seems so well-behaved. I like her very much."
"Mrs. Owens, you’re too kind," Harrison Sutton said, gesturing for Alia to join him in seeing Mrs. Owens off.
Alia did not refuse, maintaining a polite smile the entire ti as she walked Mrs. Owens to her car.
Harrison Sutton was very pleased with Alia. "You handled that well. A true daughter of the Sutton family."
Alia was delighted. "I don’t recall us having much to do with the Owens family. Why did Mrs. Owens visit today?"
Harrison Sutton replied, "Just because we haven’t had dealings in the past doesn’t an we won’t in the future. In the world of business, it’s always better to have more friends than enemies. Alright, go get so rest. I have things to attend to."
With that, Harrison Sutton went to his study.
Alia Sutton returned to her room, and while lying on her bed scrolling through her phone, she saw a post from Sherry Caldwell.
It was a picture of a large hand and a small one clasped together, both wearing rings. Sherry’s caption read: "Today I lost the most important person to , but I also gained a new one. I will be happy for the rest of my life."
Just then, she received a ssage.
Sean: [Alia Sutton, regarding the marriage between the Hughes and Sutton families, I hope you’ll reconsider. I don’t think we’re a good match.]
Alia was furious when she saw the ssage and imdiately called him back.
BEEP... BEEP... BEEP—
The call connected.
"Hello?" A gentle female voice answered.
It was Sherry Caldwell.
Alia’s expression changed. "Where’s Sean? I need to speak with him!"
"Sean is cooking for ," Sherry Caldwell said, then raised her voice. "Sean, I want a fried egg."
"Okay, I’ll make you one right now."
"Thank you," Sherry said, then spoke into the phone. "Miss Sutton, my apologies, but Sean probably won’t be able to take your call for a little while. If you have nothing else to say, I’m going to hang up. Sean is calling for dinner."
And with that, Sherry Caldwell hung up.
Alia Sutton stared at her phone, her eyes red with fury. Unable to take it anymore, she grabbed her phone and stord out to find Harrison Sutton.
The marriage alliance was a matter between two families. Now that there was a problem, the only person she could rely on was Harrison Sutton.
When she reached the study door, Alia was about to push it open when she heard voices from inside.
"Since Mrs. Owens is so fond of my daughter, let’s consider the marriage alliance settled. When can the betrothal gift be delivered? I’m not afraid to admit it—the Sutton family is in a bit of trouble right now and is in urgent need of the funds to get through this crisis. Yes, yes, good... I’ll arrange for Alia to have dinner with you first. We’ll all be family soon, so we should get to know each other better."
Alia Sutton froze on the spot.
Eliza Sutton’s words from the hospital flashed through her mind.
Eliza had said their father would marry her off in a ghost marriage.
She had assud Eliza was just trying to provoke her, but she never imagined it could actually be true.
Alia couldn’t control herself any longer. She broke down and made a call.
"Hello, Alia."
"Brother, you have to co back! Mom and I are being bullied to death here!" Alia wailed. "Eliza Sutton and Dad are both bullying !"
Cedric Sutton soothed his sister. "Don’t be afraid, Alia. I’m coming back right away. Just you wait. I’ll get revenge for you."
...
"We just received news. Cedric Sutton has booked a flight back ho."
"I know," Eliza Sutton said before hanging up.
She stood before the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing out at the myriad lights of the city, a dangerous glint in her eyes.
’Cedric Sutton is finally coming back.’
’As Mae Sheffield’s son and the heir Harrison Sutton relies on, it would be far too boring if he didn’t return.’
Eliza Sutton watched her reflection in the window. A slow smile spread across her face, but her eyes remained dark and empty, without a single spark of light.
「Seacliff Manor.」
Shane Lockwood asked Housekeeper Zimrman, "Where is Eliza Sutton?"
"The Mistress has not returned."
"Did she say where she was going?"
Housekeeper Zimrman shook her head. "The Mistress didn’t say. But the Young Master said that she’s moving into his house at The Lumina Gardens and won’t be coming back anymore. The Young Master also said..."
"What did Emtt Lockwood say?"
"The Young Master said he’s going to move in with the Mistress too."
As soon as Housekeeper Zimrman finished speaking, Shane Lockwood heard Emtt Lockwood’s voice directing the household staff.
"Be careful with that suitcase! Don’t drop it. It’s full of presents I’m giving to Mom."
Emtt ca out with the servants and saw Shane Lockwood. "Dad, you’re back. You’ll be eating alone tonight. I’m going to keep Mom company."
His smug tone all but announced that his father had been abandoned by his mother.
Shane Lockwood snorted disdainfully. "Childish."
"Childish? Yes, I am childish, and Mom likes that I’m childish. Unlike you, who’s so mature you’re practically old. That’s why Mom doesn’t like you."
’So mature you’re practically old...’
Shane Lockwood swore that if this wasn’t his own son, the boy would’ve been stuffed in a sack by now.
Seeing his father’s dark expression, Emtt didn’t dare provoke him any further and quickly said, "Alright, Dad, you should go eat and get so rest. I’m leaving now."
With that, Emtt beckoned to the servants. "Let’s go, hurry up."
The servants glanced cautiously at Shane Lockwood. Seeing that he said nothing, they followed Emtt into the car.
Shane Lockwood watched Emtt leave, so exasperated he almost laughed. Just as he was about to say sothing, he saw Erik Irvine approaching with a file.
"President Lockwood, here is the information you requested. And this just ca in from the Shadow Division."
Shane Lockwood took the file, opened it, and froze.
