"Wh-why?"
Lucas Reed’s fingers turned white from gripping his phone so tightly, eager to ask more questions, yet all he heard was the cold beep of a disconnected line. He stood there holding the phone, seemingly unable to process the words "terminated."
Evan Palr was also thrown into panic. He hurriedly leaned in, his tone filled with disbelief and urgency: "Doctor Reed, could there be so mistake? How could the Sterling Research Institute just terminate you like that?"
"It must be a scam call!" Lucas snapped back to attention, staring at the unfamiliar international number on his screen as if clutching at a lifeline. "I’m one of the top experts in international dical circles; how could they just remove ? It must be a prank!"
He tried to appear calm, but his slightly trembling voice betrayed the turmoil inside.
"Director!"
Just then, the vice-director of Love & Kindness Hospital ca running down the corridor, drenched in sweat, holding up his phone with a ghastly pale face. "Look at the trending news! The Sterling Research Institute just announced on their website that you’ve been officially removed!"
"What?!" Lucas felt the blow like a lightning strike, snatching the phone from the vice-director’s hand.
On the screen, the announcent from the Sterling Research Institute was glaring and conspicuous, with a sensational title—"Statent on the Termination of Temporary Researcher Lucas Reed," directly accusing him of "misusing the institute’s na," bearing the institute’s official seal.
"No... impossible..." Lucas’s legs went weak, almost collapsing to the floor, and the phone slipped from his grip, crashing to the ground.
His life’s ambition was to make a na for himself internationally, but this was not the fa he had expected—to beco the first researcher publicly expelled from the Sterling Research Institute.
For Doctor Reed, the sky was falling; his transition, reputation, future... all ruined!
Everyone around quickly took out their phones, and the trending topic headlines refreshed like a tidal wave. #SterlingResearchInstituteExpelsResearcherLucasReed# firmly occupied the top spot.
The internet erupted, with nurous forr patients from Love & Kindness Hospital coming forward, exposing Lucas for "exaggerating conditions" and "mis-prescribing dicine," proliferating rumors about the hospital and Lucas everywhere.
Lucas could no longer care about Old Master Carter’s life or death; his mind was occupied only with the words "public relations crisis" as he staggered alongside the vice-director to an ergency eting, leaving a miserable figure behind.
"Look! The second trending topic!" Maria Carter suddenly exclaid, pointing at her phone with a gasp.
The crowd followed the sound, witnessing the Sterling Research Institute’s second announcent. The title sent shivers down everyone’s spine.
"Warning on the Theft and Hazard of Semi-finished Drugs from Sterling Research Institute."
This announcent claid that a thief had stolen the institute’s experintal-stage neuroactive semi-finished drugs, and they were now illegally circulating in the underground market, having already caused several brain deaths due to drug side effects.
The picture accompanying it showed a bottle with a label and number, looking identical to the one Rainny White had brought!
The end of the announcent noted that the institute had reported the case, and Interpol was launching a global manhunt for the thief.
The entire family gasped when they saw this news.
It was fortunate that Emily Parker was present today; she strongly opposed using such a drug, or else it might have already been administered by now.
"Damn you, Rainny White!"
Maria Carter, trembling with anger, stord forward and slapped Rainny White hard across the face, the sharp sound echoing through the corridor.
"I knew you had ill intentions! You actually wanted to use this murderous semi-finished drug to harm Grandfather!
You just want to clear your own na using Grandfather’s life and shift the bla to the institute!"
Rainny White covered her face, the color drained from her cheeks, her eyes filled with panic and dread.
She never imagined that not only would she fail to please the Carter family, but she’d also entangle herself in an international incident, dood beyond redemption.
"I didn’t know anything, Brother Carter, I only wanted to help, and I bought this dicine myself."
She desperately tried to disassociate herself.
"Where did you get this drug from?"
Emily Parker stepped up to Rainny White, looking down at her, her tone as cold as ice.
The Sterling Research Institute’s control over its drugs was as tight as a fortress, even scrapped semi-finished products required multiple levels of registration and destruction, aning Rainny White had no access.
Rainny White covered her burning cheek, her eyes avoiding contact, her voice faltering: "J-just a friend introduced it, said it could save Grandfather, I had good intentions..." She stubbornly held onto the vague notion of a "friend," terrified of exposing the sister behind the scenes.
"Call the police first." Mrs. Carter, who had been silent, suddenly spoke, her tone calm yet unyielding.
Without even glancing at Rainny White, who lay on the ground, she took out her phone to dial, "This is no longer a family affair; drug theft and intent to harm must be handed over to the police."
Concerned about her father’s safety, the more Mrs. Carter thought about it, the more alard she beca.
Rainny White accurately obtaining the "dicine" for her father’s condition could not be a coincidence; there must be soone orchestrating from behind the scenes.
"What’s with calling the police!"
Old Lady Carter stamped her cane heavily on the ground and shouted angrily, "With so much happening in the family, do you really want to make it public and lose all face?"
In her eyes, the family’s sha must not be disclosed, even if Rainny White made a mistake, it should be settled privately.
Evan Palr imdiately concurred, stepping forward to snatch Mrs. Carter’s phone, speaking firmly: "The old lady is right, spreading the word would damage the Carter family’s reputation! Don’t call the police yet, let’s discuss it further!"
