Chapter 212: Chapter 207
After leaving the study, Maria Carter had to attend her online class soon. Without any delay, she bid farewell to the two and left first.
Emily Parker watched Maria Carter’s departing figure, gathered her thoughts, then turned her gaze to Carlos beside her. In a soft, sincere voice tinged with gratitude, she said softly, “Carlos, thank you for earlier.”
She genuinely appreciated Carlos from the bottom of her heart. If he hadn’t stepped in promptly, she didn’t know how the situation would have ended.
“You’re my wife. Isn’t it my duty to stand up for you?”
Carlos responded almost instinctively, and the mont the words left his mouth, he was startled himself.
These words rolled off his tongue so naturally, as if he had called her his wife countless tis.
Upon hearing this, Emily Parker’s heart skipped a beat, and a faint, barely noticeable blush crept onto her face.
She slightly lowered her head, not daring to et Carlos’s eyes directly, feeling as if a little deer was prancing wildly inside her heart.
On Carlos’s handso face, a trace of embarrassnt appeared at this mont. He cleared his throat, trying to cover up his lapse.
He touched his nose, his gaze slightly evasive, and explained,
“You and the Old Master are both important family mbers to .”
As soon as he said it, he felt sothing wasn’t quite right, but he couldn’t pinpoint it.
“And what about your dad?”
Emily Parker suddenly recalled the scene she had witnessed that day. A doubt lingered in her heart. The car’s dashcam seed problem-free these days, but she had a bold suspicion, only lacking key evidence so far, so she hadn’t dared to tell the Carter Family directly.
When Evan Palr was ntioned, Carlos’s face imdiately darkened, and a hint of disgust flashed in his eyes.
He pressed his lips tightly together, the lines on his face becoming exceptionally stern, as if he was extrely resistant to the subject of Evan Palr, unwilling to say a word more.
Seeing Carlos in this state, Emily Parker wisely refrained from pressing further and returned to her room.
Carlos, anwhile, went downstairs alone to the bar, took a bottle of whiskey from the shelf, and poured himself a full glass.
The amber liquid swirled gently in the glass. He drank it all in one go, the spicy liquor sliding down his throat, burning his insides, but temporarily numbing his nerves.
After returning to her room, Emily Parker first tended to so work-related matters. When she finished and looked up at the clock on the wall, it was already late, and Carlos had not yet returned.
She sat on the bed, hesitating about whether to go find him, feeling a bit worried.
Just then, the phone beside her pillow suddenly lit up. She picked it up and saw a ssage from “Ti”.
Blue Sky: It’s so late, you’re still not asleep?
She tapped lightly on the screen to send this ssage, pondering that perhaps the Old Master, like her, was troubled by life’s trivial matters and unable to sleep.
Soon, a reply popped up on the phone screen.
Ti: Can’t sleep.
Seeing these simple three words, Emily Parker seed to sense the helplessness and frustration between the lines.
Blue Sky: Who’s made you upset?
She continued to probe, hoping to help “Ti” alleviate so of his unhappiness.
Ti: Family.
Emily Parker frowned slightly, speculating whether his family, like the Carter Family, had all sorts of complex conflicts.
Blue Sky: Arguing with your wife again?
After sending this ssage, she leaned against the headboard, quietly awaiting a response from “Ti”, while her thoughts involuntarily drifted back to Carlos downstairs.
