The car, rolling quietly along.

It was still the second day of the Lunar New Year, 12:20 p.m.

Yang Shaoqing and Fang Huai were sitting in the rear row, up front sat Chen Louxiang and Yang Lan, intent on driving to Yunnan before lunchti.

After discussing with Fang Huai, they learned that his ti was also tight and decided not to wait until tomorrow; they would leave imdiately and drive off.

This way, they wouldn’t delay Fang Huai’s schedule—he could arrive this evening and et Chen Shuang tomorrow morning; secondly, it offered an excuse for Uncle Wu to leave, saving his face by providing a reason to those back ho, saying he had to rush off to see the child.

It also clearly communicated their stance: We’ve found soone else to accompany us to see the child; we won’t be looking to you in the future.

The happiest person was Yang Shaoqing, sitting in the back seat with one earphone in, swaying to the music of "Fragrance of Rice."

Getting into the music, his pale little paw audaciously began to fiddle with the calloused hand propped on the seat beside him.

"Here, do you want to listen?"

Yang Shaoqing handed over another earphone.

Fang Huai was a little panicked inside.

There was a rearview mirror up front.

The couple in front hadn’t made a sound, but within just half an hour, Uncle Chen, who was driving, had glanced over 72 tis.

Also keeping an eye on Uncle Chen, Fang Huai counted each of those 72 tis.

Just then, Uncle Chen turned to look, glancing at the rearview mirror three tis in quick succession—as if his shoulder hurt from the dangerous movents—the tension made Fang Huai want to shout.

Uncle, this is a highway! Why aren’t you watching the road instead of focusing on the rearview mirror?

Fang Huai didn’t dare to take the earphone and quickly withdrew his hand, coughing lightly.

"Uncle Chen... How about you stop at the service area? I can drive."

After the 76th glance, Uncle Chen finally spoke:

"You know how to drive?"

Fang Huai nodded, "Yes, I just got... just got my driver’s license."

He was so nervous he almost misspoke.

After a thought, he added, "But I’m not exactly a novice, I’ve driven in the squadron. Your automatic car is easy to handle."

The couple in front both nodded in agreent.

Schrödinger’s son-in-law now had a new rit: able to drive.

They knew about Yang Shaoqing and Fang Huai’s relationship, but they thought it was just a romance, a long-distance one at that, and since he was in the military, mostly confined to the troops, it seed safer in so respects, so they hadn’t inquired much.

But now, with him stepping through their door, having beco a military officer, and actually able to get leave, they had to take it seriously.

Deep in thought, Chen Louxiang slowed the car down and spoke solemnly,

"The traffic laws state that new drivers can’t use the highways; you need a full driving history for that, Little Fang. Safety is most important; Dian Dian, when you’re with Fang Huai, you also need to remind him more often. He’s young and just got his driver’s license; he can be impulsive."

While talking, he glanced at the rearview mirror again, eyeing the couple’s hands.

Yang Shaoqing responded quite naturally, "Oh, I know, Daddy."

Yet, Fang Huai’s heart skipped a beat.

This prospective father-in-law, while never explicitly ntioning it, was clearly implying it with every word.

Fang Huai wanted to play dumb, but seeing Uncle Chen repeatedly glancing back through the rearview mirror, he knew he had to declare his position.

Clearing his throat, he said:

"Don’t worry, Uncle Chen, both Yang Shaoqing and I are young. She’s still in college. I’ll be cautious; we won’t get on the highway, I’ll practice well for a couple of years before attempting it."

Chen Louxiang clicked his tongue disapprovingly,

"Hmm... three years, wait until she graduates."

Yang Shaoqing, hearing this, was sowhat baffled, "Dad, what does his driving have to do with my graduation?"

Both n cleared their throats awkwardly.

But these few words also opened up Yang Lan’s dialogue.

"Fang Huai, I rember Chen Shuang once ntioned that your mother works in a state-owned enterprise?"

At least Chen Louxiang had exchanged a few words with his daughter, but Yang Lan knew the least about Fang Huai; she could only ask based on her previous understanding of him.

Fang Huai nodded, "Ah, yes, the grain managent office, but it’s restructured now. She’s been transferred to a state-owned flour factory. She barely goes to work, just gets a basic salary to help manage my dad’s business finances."

That information made an impression on Yang Lan.

"Your dad? That restaurant, right? Last year during the New Year... I even went there with Shaoqing. It was quite hard to get to, on the slope."

Fang Huai knew as soon as he heard it that Yang Shaoqing hadn’t ntioned their family’s "dramatic change"; he felt a playful notion and said with a smile,

"Aunt Yang, you flatter us. What restaurant? It was just a small eatery; we’ve closed it. They’ve both gone to Sichuan to start a business."

Yang Shaoqing imdiately gave him a displeased look.

She hadn’t told her parents because she felt it wasn’t right to discuss Fang Huai’s family assets with them, and now this witless guy was hamming it up.

But Fang Huai turned his head, winked at her inviting her into the play, and she imdiately perked up, joining in, "Yes! I’ve visited Uncle Fang and Aunt Zhang, they were so busy! Aunt Zhang also often cos to see . She’s been so kind, made delicious chili oil, took shopping, and she said all the money she and Uncle Zhang earned would be for to spend!"

The couple in front exchanged a look at those words.

Starting a business?

At their age, what business could they start? Maybe they were just laboring?

They always had so understanding of Fang Huai’s family background, as he had been Chen Shuang’s closest playmate during school, but they hadn’t expected things to be even tougher than they thought. However, from Shaoqing’s description, her prospective mother-in-law seed quite easy to get along with.

After experiencing Fang Huai’s network and feeling sowhat vulnerable, Chen Louxiang had an idea, sitting up straight and speaking earnestly,

"Little Fang, with your parents working hard and your career just starting, you shouldn’t buy such expensive gifts. That tie and tea weren’t cheap, right? And you even bought a bracelet for your Aunt Yang... Can you return it? When we go back, I’ll give you the items, and you can return them. It’s the thought that counts. Young people must establish a correct view of consumption!"
