"You went there just now, didn’t you?"
"My nose is incredibly sensitive! The sll of smoke can’t be brushed away with toothpaste! Besides, you taking a spittoon out in broad daylight, do you think I’m blind? Or that I can’t understand what you’re up to?"
"If there’s a next ti, I won’t need any evidence to deal with you! Don’t even think about having the chance to argue!"
Chen Zhongqiang’s face looked as if he had been struck by lightning.
Actually, Yue Tao and Sun Lianhai had already known that Chen Zhongqiang had obtained cigarettes from a local from his hotown who had arrived early in the third squad. They were sowhat dissatisfied that he hadn’t shared with them when smoking.
Now, several smokers were openly displeased with Chen Zhongqiang, looking at him with so resentnt.
Chen Zhongqiang was quite daring and walked directly to his bed. He climbed up the ladder and unscrewed a spherical knob from the inside of the iron bed. He then scooped out a handful of cigarettes from the hollow of the fra.
There were five.
He handed them to Hao Chengbin.
"Squad Leader! I promise, there won’t be a next ti! I will focus on training hard and strive to smoke openly and honorably!"
Hao Chengbin took the cigarettes, glanced at them, then casually put them into his own cigarette case.
"Alright, you smoke pretty good stuff, Black Footpole (Fu Gui), can’t buy these outside, right? Did you purchase them in Guizhou? Who bought them? How did you buy them?"
Chen Zhongqiang imdiately put on an expression as if ready to die, but seeing Hao Chengbin’s glaring eyes, he felt a bit intimidated.
"Squad Leader! I would never do anything to betray my comrades!... But don’t worry, they were not bought stealthily! He bought them on the train here from a guy from Guizhou! We wanted to buy... but we can’t even go out!"
Hao Chengbin stared at him for a while longer. It didn’t seem like he was lying, so he finally relaxed.
Smoking is one’s own business, but being able to buy cigarettes is a major issue.
There are people on 24-hour guard duty at the entrance of the New Training Building, even the little clerks watch over the daily duty list until they bring back the washed dishes.
The Base is large, and there are many places to go. Moreover, firefighting is different from other troops because it has more contact with civilians. The Training Base does not only serve new recruit training; it also houses the Firefighting School and students, as well as external personnel. Being able to buy cigarettes from the Base supermarket 200 ters away from the New Training Building indicates that soone could be out of supervision.
If a new recruit gains freedom, then suicide or desertion could occur.
If such an incident happens within the New Training Group, there would be accountability. Why could a new recruit run away? Is it due to lax managent? Why would they run? Were the new recruits being beaten, cursed, or punished?
Once an incident occurs, there’s no chance of rebuttal, as there’s certainly a reason behind it. If the higher-ups get angry, there’s no hiding it.
Not to ntion the squad leader or the company leader, even the group leader would face disciplinary action, and the subsequent training would undoubtedly face significant obstacles.
The so-called external rumors of death indicators are purely nonsense. If such events occur, soone must be held accountable.
Safety liability accidents are even more serious. If the main officers are held accountable, at the least, it could impede promotions, or at worst, it could an packing up and transferring out on the spot.
This is also the fundantal reason why windows must have safety bars, new recruits cannot be out of the squad leader’s sight, are not allowed to go downstairs on their own, and even their toilet ti is limited.
"Alright, this afternoon, I’ll take you guys to practice on the bars and test out a bit. Give it your all! If I’m satisfied with the results, you’ll get to smoke tonight!"
After speaking, Hao Chengbin glanced at the ti and left for the Brigade Departnt with his hands behind his back.
Hope flickered in everyone’s eyes.
Several smokers imdiately instructed Zhao Bing and Fang Huai.
"Brothers, we’re counting on you for our hope!"
Zhao Bing imdiately laughed, showing a slyness that didn’t match his simple appearance for the first ti, "Damn it! You bastards only rember when you need sothing. I don’t even smoke! And you want to bust my ass for you! I didn’t even get a piece of at at lunch!"
Everyone looked at Liu Yue.
Sun Lianhai imdiately exposed him, "I saw that Liu Yue hid several pieces of at at the bottom of his bowl!"
Liu Yue spread his hands and feigned ignorance, "I didn’t! I really didn’t hide any! You can check my bowl this afternoon!"
At this mont, Lu Zexian also appeared sowhat cheerful and loudly said, "Damn it! Who stole our soldier brother’s at! Don’t worry, soldier brother, you just go all out, grab the top spot for the whole company, and I’ll help you fight for at later!"
Fang Huai unbuckled his belt, pulled it from behind his neck, and stretched out his arms, "Enough, you guys should hope everyone can do at least a couple of pull-ups. We can’t just rely on the strong; a few zero scores will look bad on the squad leader.
Lu Zexian, Peng Yingqirui, and Sun Lianhai, you guys should try a bit harder to break so new ground."
Lu Zexian grimaced and gestured from his head to his feet, "Brother, with my height, it’s tough to do the pull-ups on the bar! I heard in the troops you have to pull up past the chin, and with my long arms, how high will I have to pull to do one?"
Fang Huai, knowing that one must pay a price to get sothing and needing to perform to beco the Deputy Squad Leader, advised Lu Zexian, "The bar is pretty low, and they’re not too strict with new recruit tests. Later, just learn to swing and as long as you can grip the bar well, hook your feet and swing a couple of tis, or pull up in one go when you jump up. With your height, it shouldn’t be a problem."
"Okay, I’ll give it a try!" Lu Zexian didn’t want to hold back the team either.
Sun Lianhai, longing to smoke, also said, "Alright, I’ll do my best! But no guarantees!"
Now, the pressure was on Peng Yingqirui.
"What about you, little guy?" Jiang Peng hooked Peng Yingqirui’s shoulder, grinning.
Sohow, within half a day, Jiang Peng and Peng Yingqirui had gotten on quite well.
