Chapter 556: Spin-off: Cause and Effect, and Rules 1

Shen Yan was dead.

When her body rose up, no, it should be said when her soul rose up, she felt herself about to soar into the sky.

She couldn’t stop herself from rising!

“Fuck! What’s happening? Why am I floating?”

Shen Yan frantically paddled through the air!

She tried to grab onto sothing, but there was nothing but empty space in front of her, no obstacles to be found.

Looking down at the bustling noise below, no matter how she scread, no one could hear her.

Just when Shen Yan thought she was going to float up to heaven, a force yanked her down from the soles of her feet.

“Whoosh!”

Shen Yan’s soul fell back to the ground.

She stood up steadily and patted her shocked little heart.

“What’s going on? What’s happening to ?”

Shen Yan raised her hands and looked at them, perfectly fine—so why was she floating?

She still had a variety show to shoot!

Shen Yan scanned her surroundings and paused, confused. Why was she supposed to shoot that variety show?

Scenes from her life as a human flooded her mind, and the corner of her mouth twitched violently.

“What kind of craze am I going through, to like soone with the surna Mu? That’s just ridiculous,” she muttered.

Shen Yan patted her head, speechless.

“You’re not going crazy.”

A low, magnetic voice ca from behind her.

Shen Yan spun around, and then she saw a handso man dressed in exotic attire, his emotionless ice-blue eyes staring at her.

Shen Yan stared at this handso man, with his long hair and ethnic accessories, for quite so ti.

He could see her!

The man in the exotic costu walked up to her and raised his long, fair hand to flick her forehead lightly.

“Ouch!”

It was as if sothing in Shen Yan’s head vibrated, causing a sharp pain.

She stepped back, holding her head, staring at the man in front of her, who gave her a strange feeling. “Do we know each other?”

“Not exactly.”

“…But you obviously know .”

“If you know, then why ask?”

“We do know each other; no, that’s not right. If soone like you—I would rember if we had t,” Shen Yan scrutinized the aloof man before her. “I indeed feel sowhat familiar with you.”

“You’ve forgotten,” the man said indifferently.

“Who exactly are you? Why can you see ?” Shen Yan still didn’t dare get too close.

Though she didn’t feel any hostility from this man, in fact, there was even a sense of closeness,

so people who look like good people could be deceitful at heart—you must be wary.

The man said, “I was once your Guardian.”

“Guardian? What is that?”

“It’s not a thing; it’s a position.”

“Oh, so like a bodyguard then.”

The man was silent for a mont: “You could say that.”

“So, do you know what’s happened to ?”

The man’s clear dark eyes fixed on her: “You’re dead.”

“…” Shen Yan stood there stupefied. After a long while, she murmured, “No wonder no one could hear no matter how much I yelled—I’m actually dead. So, are you Hell’s ssenger? Here to take my soul? Where’s the scythe?”

Recovering from her shock, Shen Yan circled around the man, searching for the hidden scythe.

The man reached out and grabbed her wrist, his gaze deep as he stared at her: “Listen, I’m not Hell’s ssenger. With here, Hell’s ssengers wouldn’t dare to take you away—nobody can, understand?”

The man’s gaze was too cold, his tone also suppressed with a touch of malice.

Shen Yan, her hand pinched painfully, stared at him, forgetting to resist.

After a long mont, the man let out a breath, adjusting his emotions, “Walk with .”

“I want to see my body…”

“You can’t go back.”

“Is there really no way for you to take back?”

He released her and stared at her in silence, “To continue being the foolish Shen Yan?”

Shen Yan: “…”

Don’t curse at people like that.

Shen Yan squatted down disheartenedly, drawing circles in the dirt with her hand, pouting, “I didn’t get to enjoy anything, and just died like that, so unfair. If you could pull down, there must be a way to take back.”

The man stood beside her, still watching her in silence.

“If I can’t go back, at least let see my family, see how my body is now.” She raised her head, looking at him with innocent, pitiful eyes, “Please.”

The man walked up to her and extended his hand.

Shen Yan imdiately gripped it with a beaming smile, “Let’s go to my place now!”

*

After watching the whole process, Shen Yan’s face was paler than a ghost’s.

Due to so restriction, she was ordered not to approach, only allowed to watch from a distance.

She squatted on the ground, again drawing circles in the sand with her finger.

“Why play with my body like that, and who is the person living in it?”

The man stood one step in front of her, looking towards the island across the river, “I didn’t play with your body. Your body once transferred sothing into hers, hence this opportunity arose.”

“Is it you who gave her the chance of rebirth?”

“Not , but those two people,” the man indicated a direction.

“Oh, you an Chu Jing and Mu Jincheng. I didn’t see anything special about them though.”

“They possess a certain fate, soone with the sa na and surna as you needs to rely on this fate to maintain a stable field of rebirth.”

Shen Yan: “Isn’t that just stealing soone else’s luck?”

“It can be said that way. It’s also because of so karmic ties among the three of them, hence this talk of borrowing luck.”

“Will they die then?” Without luck, won’t they beco unlucky?

“It depends on their subsequent fortune. For now, they cannot be hard.”

“Then why did you implant that whatever plot for? What was your purpose?” Shen Yan had many things she couldn’t understand.

It seed to her that the man’s actions were superfluous.

“Because of the rules.”

“What rules?” Shen Yan eyed him with curiosity, “I haven’t asked you yet, are you a ghost or an immortal?”

“The rules of this world that no one can overstep. I am neither an immortal nor a ghost, but my world, and yours, are not here. You don’t belong here.”

“I’m dead, of course I don’t belong here anymore. Because of that rule, you needed to disturb her mories? Make her think she’s in the world of a certain book? I still don’t quite understand.”

The man spoke, “You don’t need to understand, just know that if I don’t do this, I’ll face severe punishnt for violating the rules of the world.”

Shen Yan uttered an ‘oh,’ continuing to stare at the small island ahead in a low voice, “I actually don’t feel sad, as if dying is a very common thing. Did I die often before?”

“Mm.”

“Ah? Really?” Shen Yan’s eyes brightened, “Am I like you?”

“Yes.”

“An immortal? Otherwise, how could I be so incredible, to die and be reborn again.”

“You’re not reborn, you’re reincarnated. That body is your reincarnation.” The man’s eyes darkened slightly, “You lived an extra year in this life because of her.”

“What does that an?” Shen Yan’s pretty face paled once more.

“You never lived past eighteen in any lifeti. You and I, we don’t belong in this world. Hence, the ti you linger here must not be discovered by anyone. It’s best for you to leave soon.”

“Leave? To where?” Shen Yan murmured softly, “So it turns out my life was that miserable.”

“If we’re to make a distinction, it’s to return to our parallel world. There, that is where we truly belong.”
