"Hello, Director Qian."

"Director Qian, are you about to get off work?"

"Director Qian, the Cardiac Surgery Departnt is organizing a seminar at the First Hospital tomorrow, are you leading the team? Is it still possible for to sign up now?"

"Yes, it’s still possible."

As Qian Yisheng walked towards his office, he responded to the colleagues greeting him. Just as he reached the office door and was about to open it, the phone in the pocket of his lab coat suddenly rang.

He took it out and, seeing the caller ID, raised his eyebrows in surprise.

It was actually his mother-in-law.

His mother-in-law wouldn’t normally call him proactively. Back when Lingxuan wanted to marry him, she was the strongest voice in opposition. Even after the marriage, she was lukewarm towards him as a son-in-law.

He understood that his mother-in-law sowhat looked down on his family background. Although in the eyes of outsiders, he was quite successful, becoming a director of the cardiac surgery departnt at a major hospital in his thirties, compared to the granddaughter favored by the contemporary great painter Zhang Nachuan, his status was lacking.

In his mother-in-law’s view, Lingxuan was worthy even of marrying a high-ranking official or an heir of a wealthy family.

Marrying him was considered a downgrade.

Seeing her calling, he couldn’t help but feel a bit astonished.

As he pushed open the door, he answered, "Hello, Mom."

"Sothing happened to Xuanxuan. Where are you, her husband?"

Qian Yisheng’s movent to enter the room suddenly halted, "What happened? Where is Lingxuan?"

"She’s at the hospital where you work, in the ergency room. You’re still at the hospital, right? Hurry over!"

Soon, the hospital staff mbers, who hadn’t left for the day, saw their usually calm and composed Director Qian walking swiftly down the corridor, almost breaking into a run.

"What’s happening to make Director Qian so anxious?"

"Is it the patient from the previous surgery acting up again?"

"But this direction leads to the ergency room. Are there critical injuries in the ergency room? We didn’t hear any announcent."

"I just ca from the ergency room. There’s a woman there whose hand got stabbed through by a steak knife, causing her to faint from excessive blood loss. Her mother was quite sothing, threatening the doctors with losing their jobs if they couldn’t fix it. I thought we were in a feudal society!"

"Maybe they think they can do anything because they have money? Was it an accident, or...?"

Given the force needed to pierce through a hand, saying it was an accident sounds a bit far-fetched.

"Doesn’t seem like it; the stab was precise, like throwing a dart."

"Tsk tsk, seems like the rich have their fair share of drama!"

The conversation veered off in this direction without anyone realizing.

At the entrance of the ergency room, Qian Yisheng saw Lin Yi waiting. She was without her usual impeccable makeup and hairstyle, with traces of blood on her clothes, giving him a sense of foreboding.

"Mom, how is Lingxuan?"

"Why did it take you so long? Hurry, go see her! Lingxuan said you’re good at what you do; I don’t trust other doctors."

Qian Yisheng: "..."

He thought to himself he’d apologize to the colleagues present later.

The doctors and nurses busy in the ergency room didn’t expect that the injured person was Director Qian’s wife. Before Qian Yisheng could speak, they quickly relayed the diagnosis, "The patient’s palm was pierced by a steak knife, forming a penetrating wound. Luckily, the cut isn’t large, but due to delayed dical treatnt, the patient suffered excessive blood loss and emotional turbulence, resulting in unconsciousness when brought in. We’re preparing surgery to remove the knife."

As Qian Yisheng listened, he glanced at his wife’s injured palm.

Though he wasn’t a surgeon, his role in cardiac surgery did involve so procedures on heart injuries caused by sharp instrunts.

He could tell at a glance, the knife had been thrust deliberately.

Lingxuan is always afraid of pain, unlikely to accidentally inflict such a serious injury.

That left only one possibility: soone else wielded the knife.

Without further thought, he nodded imdiately, "Thank you, Doctor Tang."

Watching his daughter being pushed into the operating room, and seeing his son-in-law not entering together, Lin Yi couldn’t help but tap him on the arm, "Why aren’t you going in with her?"

"Mom," Qian Yisheng patiently reassured her, "Doctor Tang is an excellent doctor in our ergency departnt. He will perform the surgery well. Right now, I need to know how Lingxuan got injured. Doctor Tang ntioned she had extre emotional fluctuations before losing consciousness. What exactly happened earlier?"

Lin Yi’s expression froze.

She had been focused on getting her son-in-law to co over and hadn’t thought about explaining anything to him.

"What could have happened? It was just an accident... scared her into passing out."

Qian Yisheng was silent for a mont, "Mom, Lingxuan is afraid of pain."

If it was truly an accident, when she felt the pain, she would have instinctively pulled back. No one would knowingly press their palm down onto a knife.

Facing her son-in-law’s suddenly serious deanor, Lin Yi felt inexplicably intimidated.

Seeing her husband returning from making paynts, she clung to him as if he were a lifeline.

"Anfeng, co quick."

Zhang Anfeng barely managed to pull on a smile upon seeing his son-in-law present as well.

"Yisheng, you’re here."

"Dad, I was just about to leave when I got Mom’s call, so I ca over."

Even the father-in-law is here!

Judging from their barely concealed panic, no matter how hard they tried to disguise it, Qian Yisheng’s sense of unease grew stronger.

The red light of the operating room turned green.

"The surgery was successful, the steak knife has been removed, and under local anesthesia, she should regain consciousness soon after receiving an IV. Just rember to include more iron-rich foods in her diet for a while. Oh, almost forgot, with Director Qian around, there’s no need for my reminders."

Qian Yisheng patted Doctor Tang’s shoulder and thanked him. When a nurse ca out carrying the blood-stained knife, he stopped her, "Please, let have the knife."

With the knife still stained with blood, he wrapped it in a tissue and slipped it into his pocket, then reached to hold his wife’s cold fingertips.

He had only ever seen her vibrant and proud; to see her lying so vulnerably on a hospital bed reminded him of the ti she gave birth to their daughter.

Hearing the operation was successful, Lin Yi breathed a sigh of relief.

Though uninjured herself, the emotional impact had been significant for her.

With her worries easing, her legs gave way, and she sank to the ground.

Seeing her seated on the floor, Zhang Anfeng realized and quickly moved to help her up.

"Mom and Dad, you two should go ho and rest. I’ll take care of Lingxuan," suggested Qian Yisheng.

"Well, alright." Lin Yi didn’t insist. She hadn’t even had dinner yet and, though hungry, couldn’t muster an appetite. Additionally, fearing her son-in-law might push further for answers, she finally caved under the strain.

Zhang Anfeng shared her sense of upheaval, his mind a tangled ss.

This matter wasn’t over yet. There were explanations needed for the elder, and issues at the company awaited his resolution.

After a few words of instruction, the couple linked arms and left, while Qian Yisheng assisted in pushing the hospital bed into the room.

Once the nurse exited, he sat quietly at the bedside for a mont, then called his sister.

"If you could, take care of Nannan for a few more days."

"What happened, big brother?"

"Your sister-in-law is injured and in the hospital. I need to stay and look after her."

"How did she get hurt?"

"Not clear yet."

Qian Yiheng: "...I’ll bring Nannan to visit her tomorrow. She was just saying she wanted Mommy today. It took Yaya and a while to calm her down."

"Mhm, please do. Call when you arrive at the hospital, and I’ll co get you."

After hanging up, he retrieved the knife from his pocket and went to the en-suite bathroom to wash off the bloodstains.

The steak knife was sharp, evidently high-quality.

He felt the engraved markings on it.

The ancient seal script spelled out "Sheng Qi."

It was a place he had been to once with Lingxuan as her escort, a very upscale club.

So, Lingxuan was injured during a al?

As he was about to find the contact details of the club to inquire about the events of the evening, he heard a commotion outside, prompting him to quickly step out of the bathroom.

"Lingxuan."

Waking up, Zhang Lingxuan didn’t imdiately recognize her husband’s voice, and her vision was still sowhat blurred. That didn’t stop her from gritting her teeth and cursing, "Jiang Lingxi, I’ll never forgive you!"

Qian Yisheng suddenly froze in his tracks.
