Su Xiyang followed Shen Fanyun, weaving through the dense crowd. Under the envious, jealous, and hateful gazes of countless guests, they headed toward the inner area.
The so-called elites who had mocked Su Xiyang, including Su Ziye, were now utterly silent.
"Cough, cough." Gu Duo finally broke her long silence, perhaps to save face or perhaps out of sheer defiance. "They just got lucky. It’s nothing impressive."
The crowd ignored her; few voiced their agreent. Gu Duo’s face burned with humiliation. She knew she was being petty, but she couldn’t help it. This ti, she had lost to Su Xiyang, thoroughly and completely.
"Hey, sister, have you forgotten about ?" Su Ziye called out as he realized the opportunity. "I’m part of the Su Family too! Take with you!" He was desperate to get into the inner area, which was filled with influential figures. Just eting one of them could make his career take off.
The crowd watched in disgust. This Su Ziye was utterly shaless. A mont ago, he had been joining in on the verbal assault against his own sister, piling on with glee. Now, he was plastering on a smile and calling her "sister" this and "sister" that. When a person has no sha, they are truly invincible.
WHOOSH!
A single sharp glance from Shen Fanyun made Su Ziye falter and give up.
Seeing her chance, Gu Duo sidled up to him and sowed discord. "That sister of yours... if her luck turns, will there be any place left for you to speak in the Su Family? Think about it, Su Ziye. If she really takes off, you’ll be fit for nothing but to be her servant!"
This statent struck a nerve, and Su Ziye’s face twisted into a grotesque mask of resentnt.
Excited, Su Xiyang followed Shen Fanyun closely, her eyes darting everywhere. She was so worried about getting separated from him that she almost reached out to tug on the corner of his shirt.
"What is it?" Shen Fanyun asked, puzzled by her fidgeting.
Su Xiyang quickly waved her hands. "Nothing, nothing."
"Mr. Shen, we have many important guests in the inner area today, so I won’t be able to accompany you the whole ti. Please forgive ," Xu Yang said politely. "But don’t worry, I’ve arranged for a colleague to assist you one-on-one."
Shen Fanyun replied, "There’s no need to arrange anyone. We’ll just look around on our own. You can go attend to your duties."
"How could I do that? I must make proper arrangents. This way, if you have any needs, soone will be on call."
Afterward, Xu Yang introduced them to a tall young woman in a gray pantsuit nad Chen Yun, who would be their attendant.
"I’d kind of like so champagne," Su Xiyang whispered, tugging on Shen Fanyun’s sleeve.
Shen Fanyun scratched his head. What’s with her? She’s like a different person since we ca inside. Anyone who didn’t know better would think I brought my daughter to a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Before Shen Fanyun could get Su Xiyang so champagne, Chen Yun’s icy voice cut in, "This area is full of important clients. I hope you two will refrain from walking around. It would be best to stay in one spot until the ribbon-cutting ceremony ends. If you disturb one of the VIPs, the consequences will be your own. I am only responsible for keeping an eye on you. If you cause any trouble, you will have to bear it yourselves!" Her tone was unmistakably condescending.
Su Xiyang bristled at Chen Yun’s aggressive posture. ’Keep an eye on us’? What does she an by that? Did Shen Fanyun have to pull so strings to get us in? Is that why we can’t enjoy the sa treatnt as the real VIPs? Still... we can’t even have a single glass of champagne?
Worried that pushing the issue would put Shen Fanyun in a difficult position, Su Xiyang relented. "Okay, we won’t have any, then." Then, like a model student, she stood obediently in place.
Chen Yun nodded with satisfaction. "I like obedient people."
Shen Fanyun hadn’t expected Chen Yun to treat them with such an attitude. There must have been a major miscommunication between Xu Yang and her. She must think we snuck in through the back door and that her job is to watch us to prevent any incidents.
"I’ll get it for you," Shen Fanyun said, ignoring Chen Yun’s warning. He walked over, grabbed two glasses of champagne, kept one for himself, and handed the other to Su Xiyang.
Su Xiyang hesitated to take the glass.
"Cheers," Shen Fanyun said, pressing the glass into her hand and clinking it with his own.
With Shen Fanyun there to back her up, she felt bold enough to take a defiant sip right in front of Chen Yun.
"You!" Chen Yun flushed with anger and humiliation as she glared at Shen Fanyun.
He t her gaze calmly. "Your job is to assist us, not to control us."
"Hah! Soone who ca in through the back door is putting on airs with ? Do you really think you’re sobody special?" Chen Yun was already annoyed that Xu Yang had stuck her with such a nial task, and now this flippant nobody was openly defying her.
Ignoring her, Shen Fanyun turned to Su Xiyang again. "Would you like so fruit?"
Su Xiyang’s face lit up. "Oh, yes!"
As Shen Fanyun started to move, Chen Yun quickly stepped in his way, blocking him. "You will stay right here!" she hissed. "I was already being generous by letting you have champagne. Don’t push your luck!"
Shen Fanyun replied coolly, "You had better go and confirm with your supervisor, Xu Yang, what exactly your task is."
Is she kidding ? Even Shen Junhuan, the undisputed top dog in Capital City, has to treat politely, and this woman is treating like so freeloader who snuck in through the back door? Denied a glass of champagne, and now it’s a hassle to even get a piece of fruit. Damn it. The more I think about it, the angrier I get. This is all that bastard Shen Junhuan’s fault. When I have ti, I’m definitely going to kick his ass. What kind of employees does he have? All of them are arrogant snobs who look down on everyone!
"Are you trying to bluff ? Do you think I was born yesterday?" Chen Yun scoffed. "Your little trick is so obvious. You think I don’t know that the mont I leave to ask Manager Xu, you’ll disappear into the crowd?"
Shen Fanyun was speechless. Okay, this one is just plain stubborn. There’s no point in arguing with her.
"Co on, I’ll show you around sowhere else," Shen Fanyun said, taking Su Xiyang’s arm to lead her away.
Chen Yun refused to budge. "Stop right there!" she snapped. "If you move from this spot again, I’ll have security throw you out. Then everyone will know you snuck in through the back door. How humiliating would that be!"
Fearing more trouble, Su Xiyang tugged on Shen Fanyun’s sleeve. "It’s fine. We’re already lucky to be inside. Why don’t we just stay here?"
Just as they reached a stalemate, a mocking voice cut in. "Well, well, well. Is it fate that we et again, or are you just that unlucky to run into at a place like this?"
Xu Bingqing sauntered over. She had been passing by when she noticed the commotion and Shen Fanyun. At first, she was just surprised to see him, but she couldn’t help but laugh out loud, having overheard fragnts of their argunt. With a smirk on her face, she looked Shen Fanyun up and down. "I am rather curious, though. How did you manage to get in? As far as I know, only high-society elites are allowed here. Are you worthy?"
Did I just hear sothing about sneaking in through the back door?
