“Mother, why did you let her go?” Bai Xiachen asks after tugging at his mother’s sleeve.
Rubbing the boy’s head as a sign of reassurance, Bai Yan dons the familiar shallow smile of a scheming fox: “We’re using her as bait to lure out the big fish.”
