Maybe it was because of this dream that Natalie Vaughn no longer worried about whether her calls would disturb Zane Thorne, nor did she care if she would run into anything.
Every ti, she would call precisely at the right mont.
She wasn’t a clingy person, nor a timid one. But now Zane was too far from him, right beside Gideon Sheffield. It was as if he was telling her he was very close to five years ago.
She didn’t discuss the dream scene with Zane in detail because she didn’t want to recall the palpitations and pain from the dream. But this dream, she would think about every day at so mont, unable to forget it, even rembered more deeply.
Sotis it was during filming seeing the fake blood on actors, sotis it was seeing a car speeding by on the roadside.
Natalie vaguely felt she needed to figure out what happened five years ago to be at ease.
It was two days later when she received a ssage from Phoebe Quinn, her intuition was spot on, Vivi whom she saved twice was Gideon Sheffield’s forr fiancée, Vera Underwood.
Natalie did not hesitate at all, after confirming this matter, she directly called Vera Underwood.
As soon as the call connected, Natalie promptly identified herself.
"I’m Natalie Vaughn."
There was a long silence on the other end, and Natalie spoke again quietly.
"I’m Zane Thorne’s wife, and I know who you are. Could we et?"
The other end remained silent, but the breathing beca more rapid, deep, and heavy; Natalie recognized it.
"I just want to know so things."
Vera finally spoke.
"Where?"
The voice was hoarse and sowhat trembling.
"Ti and place, you decide."
...
2:30 in the afternoon, at a café.
Natalie entered the shop dressed in black with a baseball cap. Because it was a working day, there weren’t many people in the café at this ti, she spotted Vera Underwood with just one glance.
She was wearing a red sweater, paired with simple jeans, an extrely casual outfit, yet it highlighted her elegance.
Vera Underwood was very pretty, leaning towards pure beauty. The light makeup she wore revealed delicate features, a faint sorrow hovering between her eyebrows and eyes, making her seem secluded behind a veil of thin mist.
But, she was too thin, her exposed neck, shoulders, and wrists, all too thin.
Natalie walked over, took off her hat, and sat down in front of her.
Vera showed a mont of unease, she intertwined her hands, her fingers tightly clenched.
Natalie smiled lightly.
"You suit red well."
When she first t her, she was also wearing a red dress. If it weren’t for that red dress, she might not have ddled.
Vera showed a slight daze, lowered her head, and curled her lips faintly, sowhat bitterly.
"He said, I look good in red."
The ’he’ referred to Gideon Sheffield.
Natalie instinctively straightened her back, she thought she’d have to spend a lot of effort to get Vera to speak, but unexpectedly, Vera brought up Gideon Sheffield by herself.
Vera took a sip of her coffee.
"You ca over to ask about him, right?"
After all, she and Natalie really had no connection, apart from Gideon Sheffield. And years ago, when she was by Gideon Sheffield’s side, Zane Thorne didn’t have Natalie.
It shows she ca because of Zane Thorne.
She didn’t know much about the matter back then, just knew the race was supposed to be Zane Thorne’s, but so issues erged, the competitor thus becoming Gideon Sheffield.
"Hmm, I’m sorry, I know it’s a bit sudden too."
Vera shook her head.
"Can I ask you a question first?"
Natalie was startled, nodded afterward.
"Go ahead."
"How is he now?"
After he had an incident and she knew he survived, she left heartlessly. In these five years, she initially restrained herself from investigating any news about him. Later, when she wanted to know, she couldn’t find anything.
"He’s been abroad for treatnt these five years."
Vera’s eyes widened slightly, looking yearningly at Natalie, but Natalie shook her head.
"I don’t know much else either, to be honest, what I know isn’t from Zane himself. It’s out of curiosity about what happened five years ago, investigating secretly, that led to you."
Vera’s eyes showed disappointnt.
"Why do you want to know?"
Why want to know?
From curiosity at the start to now being heartbroken for Zane.
Natalie took a sip of coffee, looked at the sunny weather outside, with no sign of snow.
"I just feel Zane should be on the racetrack."
And not retreat to backstage, rely cultivating those kids in the club. Only when standing next to the car does Zane genuinely seem like Zane.
"You co to , maybe you won’t find answers. I only know the race back then should’ve been Zane’s to participate in."
Natalie suddenly frowned.
"You an it should have been Zane who participated, but it ended up being Gideon Sheffield? Why?"
"During self-testing, Zane was found to have traces of doping in his system. For the team’s performance, Zane sought Gideon, letting him take part in that race."
Natalie’s hand holding the cup gradually tightened.
No wonder Zane blad himself, if there hadn’t been traces of doping, he would’ve competed, and Gideon Sheffield wouldn’t have had an accident losing his legs.
But how could there be traces of doping? Since he was to compete, Zane must have been extrely careful about his diet, what he ate and drank should’ve been strictly monitored.
Natalie voiced the doubt, but Vera couldn’t provide answers. She didn’t know the situation back then either.
Moreover, at that ti she... simply didn’t have much energy to focus on the race.
Natalie didn’t continue to ask, getting this information was already beyond her expectations. She looked at the person wearing red in front of her looking exceptionally beautiful, unable to resist asking.
"You’re still rembering him, still thinking of him, back then how did you..."
"How could you heartlessly leave and abandon him?"
Vera continued from Natalie’s unfinished words, Natalie pursed her lips, looking at her. Then saw infinite sadness suddenly flood Vera’s eyes.
This reminded her of what she heard from a man when saving Vera in the hotel lobby for the first ti.
"Was it because of family issues?"
Vera’s eyes reddened suddenly, nodded then shook her head, tears uncontrollably falling, she lifted a hand to wipe them.
"I’m not worthy of him."
Natalie fell silent.
Looking at Vera like this, she must have had her reasons for leaving Gideon Sheffield back then, what they were she wasn’t in a position to ask.
Hence, Natalie patiently waited for Vera to compose herself before handing over tissues.
"If there’s trouble, perhaps I can help you."
Vera raised her head in surprise, Natalie gently pulled at a corner of her mouth.
"You know my number."
"Why?"
Why would Natalie help her so much?
Natalie rely shrugged.
"Don’t overthink, I’m doing it for my husband."
