Chapter 69: Chapter 69 Major Gu Helps You Get the dicine
After the poisoned batch of tourists had recovered, they left the clinic one after another.
But the clinic was still very busy.
Most of those who ca for treatnt were suffering from fever or stomach pains which beca unbearable at ho, but there were also many who wanted to co but couldn’t.
Therefore, Dr. Ma and Su ixi had to make house calls. If soone in the village fell seriously ill, a ssenger would be sent to fetch them. Dr. Ma would enquire about the symptoms and then had to take a dicine box and IV fluids to the patient’s ho.
In the last two days, Su ixi had made two trips to the villagers’ hos, mostly to administer IV drips to elderly people who had suffered strokes and could not walk.
She was originally a pain treatnt doctor, but now she was practically an all-purpose ergency doctor, having to deal with all manner of diseases.
...
The clinic had an old van, which counted as one of its assets. With a high chassis, it wasn’t afraid of mountain roads.
That day, Dr. Ma inford Su ixi, “Xiao Su, you can drive, right? The clinic is out of dicine, and you’ll have to go to the county to get so tomorrow.”
“Get dicine?”
“That’s right,” Dr. Ma gave her a list and told her to look for the person in charge of supplies in the county once she arrived there.
Dr. Ma also said that in the past, the dicine was delivered by higher authorities, but gradually the deliveries had stopped, and they had to fetch it themselves.
…
The next day, Su ixi set out in the van.
Her driving skills were not very good. She had only ever driven a Land Rover in the city, and the experience of driving the van was incomparably worse than that.
However, given the local conditions, she had no choice but to accept it.
She even had the impulse to use her savings to buy a new vehicle for the clinic, but doing that would have labeled her as a rich person and would have brought trouble upon herself, whether at the clinic or in the town.
It was better to keep a low profile.
She used the GPS for navigation, though the signal here was intermittent. But the road out was the only one so she couldn’t possibly get lost.
Plus, having the GPS ant there was a voice in the car telling her about the road conditions, so she wouldn’t feel too lonely.
It was a bit cold these days, and snow lay on the sides of the roads. She thought to herself that the van must not break down—because if it did, she would be in trouble, with no village ahead and no shop behind.
Unfortunately, what she feared happened.
The van broke down on a bend!
She quickly got out to have a look.
White smoke was billowing from under the hood. She opened it and saw the engine and all sorts of large and small pipes and wiring, but she had no idea where to begin.
She couldn’t help but curse inwardly: Shit!
She was an hour away from the county town and an hour away from the town, and the area was surrounded by barren hills and gorges.
She tried to call for help but there was no signal.
She thought about climbing to a nearby hillside, but halfway there she suddenly heard a rustling sound from behind the hill, which scared her right back to the car.
There were wild animals in this kind of place, such as wolves.
Although she had learned so fighting techniques, she dared not recklessly fight a wolf, as a bite would an getting a rabies vaccine.
Sitting in the car, Su ixi suddenly felt extrely helpless.
Just as she was about to cry, she thought she heard the sound of a vehicle not far off.
She imdiately ran out of the car again.
Before long, she saw a military truck approaching.
When in trouble, look for the People’s Army!
She suddenly saw hope and hurriedly waved to the truck.
The truck stopped right in front of her as expected, and the driver, dressed in military uniform, stuck out his head, “What happened?”
Excited, Su ixi said, “My car broke down, and I don’t know what to do.”
The driver got out of the truck, and several soldiers ca out with him.
“What’s wrong with the car?”
“I don’t know, it just suddenly died.” The weather was very cold now, and she was so cold her nose was about to run, her tongue also feeling a bit numb.
The driver called out to another military person in the car, “Da Liu, could you help this young woman check the car?”
The one called Da Liu started checking Su ixi’s car.
The driver then asked Su ixi, “Miss, judging by your accent, you’re not from around here, right? Why are you driving alone? If you hadn’t run into anyone, it could have been life-threatening, you know?”
Su ixi, worried he might mistake her for an impulsive tourist, explained, “I’m from Wu Bian Town Health Center. I was going to the county to get dicine today, and now the car’s broken down.”
“Oh, you’re from the health center, are you here to help out?”
“Yes.”
The driver’s gaze ward considerably as he looked at Su ixi, “You should have found soone to accompany you, though.”
“There are only three people at the health center, a doctor and a nurse. If we both left, there’d be no one left to work,” Su ixi said, rubbing her hands red with cold.
“I see,” the driver said with concern. “Then co rest in our truck for a while; don’t get frostbite. We’ll co to get you once your car’s fixed.”
“Okay.” Su ixi made no fuss; her feet were indeed frozen stiff.
Although she had brought a thick down jacket, she didn’t know there was such a thing as snow boots because Feng City had never snowed throughout the seasons.
Online shopping was also not practical since all logistics companies didn’t deliver to the area; she could only hope to buy them in the county town.
The driver left only Da Liu outside to repair the car; the rest went back to the truck.
The soldiers in the truck also chatted with Su ixi for a while. Hearing she was going to the county for dicine, one of them said, “Isn’t Major Gu in the county town?”
Another said, “Yes, but I don’t know if he can pick up the dicine for soone else?”
Su ixi hurriedly said, “I’m not sure. It seems okay as long as there’s a list of dicines.”
That soldier then said, “I’ll make a call and ask for you.”
But there was no signal in the truck, so he got out of the truck and climbed up a small hill to make the call.
With the truck doors closed, Su ixi had no idea how they communicated. After about ten minutes, the soldier returned to the truck, smiling, “It’s settled. Major said he would bring the dicine back for you; you don’t need to run to the county town. He’ll vouch with his officer’s ID.”
Su ixi quickly said, “That’s great, I can’t thank you all enough.”
So ti later, Su ixi heard the van start up, and then Da Liu ca over to knock on the window, motioning for her to co out.
“Your car’s fixed. You might not be used to this kind of manual transmission vehicle; you’ve been pressing the clutch too hard. You need to be careful in the future, or you’ll cause a lot of wear.”
Su ixi was imnsely grateful, “Okay, I will be sure to pay attention next ti!”
…
Su ixi drove the van back to the clinic, explained the situation to Dr. Ma, and then got busy.
At dusk, when the clinic was about to close, a jeep drove over. A man in casual clothes got out of the car and called at the door, “Is this the place that needed dicine fetched? Our Major ordered to bring the dicine to you.”
Su ixi and Dr. Ma were both there, and they nodded quickly, “Yes, it’s the dicine we needed.”
The man said, “Then co over and check the list.”
Saying this, he went over to help carry the dicine.
Su ixi checked the list on the side.
The man, Xiao Ding, after moving the items, took another look at Su ixi, who was checking the list. He suddenly felt she looked familiar.
“Miss, have we t sowhere before? You look very familiar to .”
Su ixi looked up and scrutinized him closely, certain she had never seen this man before.
“I don’t think so, we probably haven’t t.”
“Really? But I feel like I’ve seen you sowhere. Do you resemble a celebrity, perhaps?”
Su ixi couldn’t help but smile.
What a clichéd pickup line.
