Chapter 66: Chapter 66: Deciding to Leave Hotown
Su ixi suddenly let out a cold laugh.
At that mont, she felt a profound sense of desolation within her.
Indeed, it was only right for the Gu Family to reject her; with her family background, how could she ever match their esteed household?
Fang Xin then started to complain by her side, but Su ixi wasn’t listening. She took out her phone, opened the hospital’s main group chat, and under that notification, she replied with three words: “I volunteer.”
As soon as she had registered, the comnts exploded.
Dr. Su is truly a brave soul!
...
Well done, bringing honor to our hospital!
Kudos to such a doctor!
Firecrackers, firecrackers…
…
Su ixi did not lend money to Fang Xin, who then stopped her emotional act and cursed at her, pointing at her nose for a while before leaving. She said things like giving birth to her was like raising a debt collector, wishing she had never given birth at all.
Turning her face faster than flipping a book.
Su ixi was already used to it.
She had sympathized with Fang Xin before, thinking Fang Xin had beco a common shrew due to being abandoned by her father. But sotis, the path in life is chosen by oneself. Fang Xin had a job and could support herself but still chose to stick with her stepfather, calling it a loss; she was the true loser.
…
The list of volunteers ca out soon, with ten people from Feng City from various hospitals.
On the day of departure, a bus arrived adorned with big red flowers, picking up individuals from each hospital.
The hospital also summoned all the doctors on duty to see Su ixi off; the director gave a speech, and the deputy director read a letter of comndation from a script.
Su ixi, wearing a large red flower on her chest, was surrounded by the crowd as she boarded the bus.
She felt this was the highlight of her life; never had she been the center of attention like today!
The bus took them to the airport, and then the ten individuals took a plane to an airport in the west.
From the mont she boarded the plane, Su ixi felt as though the commotion around her had halted.
Next, she would have to walk through another lonely era all by herself.
The plane flew for three hours, made a transit, then flew another two hours before reaching an airport in the border city.
After getting off the plane, the group of ten took another bus to a smaller county town below.
The bus left the provincial city and drove for three hours.
During the journey, many people got off and others boarded; Su ixi felt dizzy from the ride, but it wasn’t dark outside yet.
It was 10 p.m., and the sky here was still bright.
Finally, they reached Ba County, and it grew dark.
Su ixi and her colleagues exited the bus, standing in the small bus station of the county town as if they had arrived in another world.
There were no clusters of tall buildings; the people looked exotic, so even wearing ethnic minority clothing, speaking a dialect they couldn’t understand.
It was also very cold. While one could wear short sleeves in Feng City, here they had to dig out thin down jackets.
A male doctor among them called a local contact, and 20 minutes later, the contact arrived in a minibus to take them to a local hotel.
One of the female doctors looked at the scenery outside and said, “This county town isn’t so bad. It seems to have everything. Supporting here wouldn’t be too hard.”
The contact smiled, “It’s not certain you’ll stay in the county town; you might be assigned to the mountains.”
“What kind of mountains?”
“The kind you can’t even imagine.”
The contact arranged for them to stay in the hotel, saying they would decide where they would specifically go after a eting the next day.
…
Su ixi slept in the hotel that night; she felt uneasy in the middle of the night, but due to the exhaustion of the journey, she didn’t wake up.
The next morning, she discovered dried blood under her nose, apparently she had had a nosebleed the night before.
The climate here was too dry!
She packed up her things and then went with her fellow doctors to report to the Ba County People’s Hospital.
For the first half of the month, they were to work at Ba County Hospital for a period of ti to see their performance before deciding on specific assignnts.
The assessnt was to be conducted by a chubby local director, also surnad Su.
Because of the limited ti, Mr. Su didn’t assign them to different departnts, but instead had them work wherever was needed.
Sotis, Su ixi went with the ambulance to fetch patients, sotis she worked with the nurses, doing a nurse’s job, and sotis she helped Mr. Su fill out dical records on the computer; she even went with the director once to a patient’s ho to demand unpaid bills.
In short, it was quite a mix.
But Su ixi diligently completed all her tasks.
That day, Mr. Su suddenly called Su ixi into his office.
It seed like the director had sothing to say to Su ixi, but he found it difficult to start.
He first tidied up his desk, then noted sothing down with a pen, then wiped his cup with a tissue.
Finally, Su ixi couldn’t hold back any longer. She asked, “Director, what did you want to see about?”
The director smiled and began making small talk, “Xiao Su, how do you find the work here? Is it hard?”
“It’s okay,” Su ixi said.
She wasn’t afraid of hard work, she just feared not being able to play her part, not truly fulfilling the purpose of her support mission.
“I think among all of you, you are the most beautiful.”
Su ixi suddenly felt sothing was amiss, but she still smiled politely, “Thank you for the complint, Director.”
“Although you are here to support us, the work remains the sa, right? If you don’t do it, soone else will. It’s just a matter of doing it well or poorly. Many people co here hopeful at first, but then beco disappointed after a while. Our conditions here are not as good as yours, nor is our equipnt. Even if your dical skills are excellent, you can’t really utilize them here. Wouldn’t it be better to find a place to peacefully spend this year and a half?”
Su ixi didn’t expect the director to think this way, and she imdiately had a complete dislike for him.
“So, what do you an, Director?”
The director smiled, “I can arrange a better place for you to spend this year and a half.”
“What would I need to do?” Su ixi asked.
Mr. Su gave a sly smile; the implication was clear from his jowly face.
Su ixi was shocked inside; she had never encountered such an unspoken rule even in Feng City, let alone in a place where she had co to contribute.
She slowly said, “I would rather follow the assignnts, go wherever the higher-ups need to go.”
Seeing that Su ixi was unmoved, his smile stiffened, and a flicker of coldness crossed his eyes.
“Fine, if you don’t want to stay in the county, then go sowhere else.”
Su ixi said, “Okay.”
…
That night, a fellow doctor nad Ah Li quietly asked Su ixi, “Xiao Su, did the director call you too? Did he hint at anything?”
Su ixi asked, “He searched for you as well? He indicated that if I complied, I could stay in the county.”
“He hinted the sa to too, that old lecher, pah!”
Su ixi said, “I didn’t accept his hint, he told to go to the mountains.”
“ too, sigh, he even threatened , saying that if I went to such places, I might not co back alive. I’m really worried now; we ca here to provide support, not to be treated like we’ve been sold.”
Su ixi whispered, “Don’t be afraid; next ti he tries anything, we must take the opportunity to record it, to have evidence of his harassnt. We are here on assignnt, people higher up are watching over us, it’s not his place to bully us. In any case, we must stick together.”
Ah Li said, “Alright, we need to be smarter in the future, never let him bully us!”
…
Mr. Su didn’t trouble Su ixi anymore, but after a little more than ten days at Ba County Hospital, she was notified that she was to go and support Wu Bian Village.
