Chapter 288: Chapter 288: Should We Get a Divorce If We Don’t Have Kids?

Su ixi had made an appointnt with a colleague from the endocrinology departnt, planning to check her pregnancy hormones when she wasn’t too busy.

She had been worried that the reason she hadn’t conceived was due to her own issues.

After all, Gu Wei was quite vigorous in bed, so it shouldn’t be a case of infertility.

Before the month had even ended, and with few patients around, she was just about to go to the urology departnt when she saw Wang Bing pass by her office with red eyes.

Su ixi couldn’t help but stop her, “What’s wrong with you?”

Wang Bing glanced at Su ixi and tears involuntarily started flowing.

“What happened?” Su ixi asked.

Wang Bing couldn’t help but co in and sit next to her, but then she didn’t speak for quite a while.

Su ixi knew Wang Bing’s personality; she, like her, was the type to keep her suffering to herself unless it was soone she was very close with.

Su ixi wasn’t in a hurry. Since there weren’t any patients anyway, she could sit and wait for Wang Bing to speak if she wanted to. If not, that was fine too.

Wang Bing quietly wiped her tears, and after about ten minutes, she finally said, “I might be getting a divorce.”

“Why? Did sothing happen?” Su ixi asked in surprise.

She had seen Wang Bing’s husband a few tis, and he seed like a simple and honest soldier.

Could it be because of infertility?

Wang Bing used the tissue Su ixi handed her and dried her tears before continuing, “Chen Shu’s mother ca over, staying at our new house, but she didn’t co alone.”

Su ixi was aware of this, as Wang Bing had ntioned it before.

Chen Shu was Wang Bing’s husband. He planned to make a career in Yun City, but since he didn’t have much capital, he bought an apartnt in a relatively remote area which had just been renovated.

No sooner had it been renovated than Wang Bing’s mother-in-law arrived with a cousin, claiming she was there to help clean and since the new house was far from the hospital, and since there were accommodations in the Military District, Wang Bing didn’t bother too much and stayed in the dormitory.

“Is your mother-in-law causing trouble again?”

Wang Bing said, “Yesterday, I accidentally saw a ssage on Chen Shu’s phone. My mother-in-law kept telling him to go over and chat with his cousin, but it turns out she’s not really his cousin. She’s a woman my mother-in-law picked from back in the country, intending for her to replace .”

“There’s such a thing?” Su ixi felt outraged but also couldn’t help comforting Wang Bing, “What does Chen Shu think about this? I feel that the key is Chen Shu. If he doesn’t agree, then your mother-in-law can do nothing. I’ve seen Chen Shu a few tis, and it seems he really cares about you.”

Wang Bing said, “Chen Shu said he won’t et that woman.”

“Then you don’t have to worry too much, as long as Chen Shu isn’t willing, your mother-in-law is powerless.”

Wang Bing suddenly looked at Su ixi sowhat desperately, “ixi, could you please co with to my mother-in-law’s place after work?”

“I…” Su ixi looked at Wang Bing.

The reason she got along so well with Wang Bing was that their personalities and outlooks were so similar.

Now that Wang Bing was asking her to go along, she probably wouldn’t need to do much, perhaps just lend so moral support and say a few words on her behalf.

Su ixi agreed, “Okay, I’ll go with you.”

After work, Wang Bing ca to find Su ixi.

The two grabbed sothing to eat at a small eatery by the hospital gate and then took a taxi to Wang Bing’s new ho.

Wang Bing and Chen Shu t in college, and during college, Chen Shu enlisted in the military while Wang Bing struggled to relocate to Yun City. Both families were average. Chen Shu’s allowances from earlier years were all spent on his father’s dical treatnt, while Wang Bing’s mother also had costly illnesses, with Wang Bing’s salary from the earlier years all sent back ho, until her mother passed away.

Therefore, when they bought a house, they chose one in the newly developed district far from the hospital because the housing prices there were cheaper.

Su ixi listened to Wang Bing tell their story. She said, “You’ve overco so many difficulties—now the only thing missing is a child…”

At this point, Su ixi couldn’t continue.

Chen Shu ca from a traditional small town where the family belief was to continue the lineage. If Wang Bing couldn’t have children, then Wang Bing would feel like a criminal, which is why she suggested divorce.

Su ixi did not agree with this mindset, but she could understand Wang Bing.

If it were her, she would probably consider divorce too.

They arrived at Wang Bing’s new apartnt.

It was in an elevator building, one elevator serving six units, with new couplets pasted on the door and hanging lanterns.

Wang Bing hesitated for a mont and decided to ring the doorbell, even though she had the keys to the house.

Shortly after, the door opened, and a woman around 60 years old ca out to greet them, surprisingly warm upon seeing Wang Bing and Su ixi outside.

“Ah, Xiao Bing, you’re here? Have you eaten yet? If not, I can whip up a couple more dishes. Is this your friend?”

Su ixi had just bought a bag of apples at the supermarket downstairs. She handed the apples to the old lady and added, “Auntie, I’m Su ixi.”

With such a warm reception, Su ixi could not remain stern.

Old Mrs. Chen invited them in, serving both tea and water, and also brought out so precious fruits from the house for them to eat.

There was absolutely no feeling of tension.

Chen Shu’s “cousin” also ca out to help entertain them. “Sister Bing, why didn’t you let us know in advance you were coming? If you had, Auntie and I could have prepared a al for you.”

Wang Bing had ntioned her mother-in-law before coming—it was this mother-in-law who was always so cunning, always smiling, even when she was urging Wang Bing to drink herbal dicine daily, all in a tone suggesting it was for her own good.

Now Su ixi was finally witnessing it.

Wang Bing looked at this cousin and smiled. “The Spring Festival is over now. Shouldn’t you be going back to your hotown to work?”

The cousin glanced at Old Mrs. Chen and replied, “My family isn’t busy, and since Auntie plans to stay here longer, I’m staying with her. Otherwise, being in a strange place, unfamiliar with the language, she might find it difficult to adjust.”

Old Mrs. Chen chid in, “Yes, having Xiao Lian with , I feel more at ease living here, and it’s more convenient to take care of everything.”

Wang Bing clenched her fist, then took a deep breath. “Mom, I saw the ssage you sent to Chen Shu yesterday. This ‘cousin’ isn’t really a cousin, is she? She’s the one you want to bring in to replace , right?”

“This…” Old Mrs. Chen faltered.

Xiao Lian was thin-skinned, and upon having her deception revealed by Wang Bing, she turned her head and went back to her room.

But Old Mrs. Chen was a seasoned manipulator; she quickly put on a smiling face again.

“Xiao Bing, now that you know, I’ll just speak openly. You see, you and Chen Shu have been married for so long, and I’ve always treated you as my own daughter, right? Every ti you co back, haven’t I been utterly open-hearted toward you? Even washing your underwear for you. But, these years have indeed passed without you having a child, I, I…”

Old Mrs. Chen broke down crying.

The speed of this change in attitude and her acting pitiful really stunned Su ixi.
