Chapter 243: Chapter 243: Watching Them Act Chapter 243: Chapter 243: Watching Them Act Ti quickly flew by, and it was the weekend.
Gu Wei and Su ixi were set to visit the Xi Family the next day.
Su ixi didn’t know what gift to buy, so Gu Wei suggested, “Just bring so of those health products you couldn’t finish eating before.”
“That works?” Su ixi felt that Gu Wei was really stingy with gifts, generous only with her but miserly with everyone else.
Gu Wei chuckled, “The Xi Family probably isn’t lacking in good things. No matter what we bring, we’ll end up taking it back ho unless you make so small crafts yourself or bake so snacks. That would show so real thought.”
Su ixi thought for a mont and said, “How about I make so water chestnut cake? I’m just not sure if it’ll turn out well; it’s been a long ti since I last made them.”
“I’ll help you make them. If they turn out well, we’ll take them; if not, we won’t,” Gu Wei said.
“Okay.”
They went to the supermarket to buy water chestnut flour and the necessary ingredients, then made water chestnut cake together at ho.
Making water chestnut cake might not be hard for so food bloggers, but it was still a challenge for beginners.
Fortunately, both of them were good at thinking and would discuss as they made the cake. After more than two hours, their water chestnut cakes were ready, glittering and translucent, soft and chewy.
Su ixi tasted one and found it delicious. She hadn’t added much sugar, so even eating a lot wouldn’t feel too heavy.
The next day, Su ixi and Gu Wei went to the Xi Family’s ho.
Located inside a high-end residential complex, the Xi Family’s house was a beautiful western-style building flanked by small gardens in the front and back.
Commander Bao and others had already arrived; seeing Gu Wei and Su ixi, Commander Bao even helped direct the parking. It seed Commander Bao ca here often and was quite familiar with the area.
Su ixi and Gu Wei entered and saw Xi Huarong and Li Shirui standing in the foyer. Besides them, there were a few others Gu Wei recognized but Su ixi did not.
Judging by their clothes and style, they appeared to be intellectuals.
When Xi Huarong and his wife saw Gu Wei and Su ixi, they ca forward to greet them. Su ixi handed the box of water chestnut cake to Li Shirui.
Li Shirui was surprised, “Did you make this yourself?”
“It was a joint effort with Gu Wei,” Su ixi didn’t want to take all the credit herself.
Li Shirui joyfully took a piece to taste, then praised Su ixi, “This is the best water chestnut cake I’ve ever had!”
Su ixi smiled and said, “Thank you for the complint, Aunt Li.”
Li Shirui then took the water chestnut cake to share with Xi Huarong and the other guests. Everyone after tasting it praised it, too.
Su ixi was very pleased to hear everyone complinting her.
…
The dinner was just everyone sitting together, eating, and making small talk to strengthen relationships.
Through Li Shirui’s introduction, Su ixi learned that the other visitors were two of Xi Huarong’s subordinates, who were leaders in various departnts in Yun City.
Among them, Gu Wei held the lowest position, likely invited because of his connection with her.
During the al, a leader surnad Zhang asked about Gu Wei, to which Commander Bao said, “He’s the youngest company commander in our army and has been comnded multiple tis for his contributions. He’s due for another promotion soon.”
The others, including leader Zhang, although senior in rank, were older and likely facing retirent soon.
At that mont, Xi Huarong introduced Su ixi, “A general’s door harbors no weak wife. This little Su is also a heroine. She bravely faced bandits to trade hostages, thereby saving the life of my young daughter, Xiao Fen.”
At that, others began to admire again.
Mr. Zhang couldn’t help but ask, “Mr. Xi, why aren’t your two daughters here today? Xiao Fen is particularly lively and cute, I quite like seeing her.”
“She’s on duty today, nurses don’t have fixed holidays,” Xi Huarong said with a smile.
“And your elder daughter, Linlin?”
When she was ntioned, Xi Huarong maintained his composure, “She might be busy with sothing.”
Commander Bao brought up Su ixi resembling Xi Huarong, “Have you noticed, doesn’t Xiao Su look a lot like Shirui? The first ti I saw Xiao Su, I thought she looked familiar, and my wife even thought I was hitting on a young lady. Do you think I’m that type of person?”
Everyone laughed. The wives of the officials with the surnas Zhang and Xu also said she looked similar.
Li Shirui jokingly said, “Since you all say Xiao Su looks like , and I don’t mind having another daughter, why not have Xiao Su beco my goddaughter?”
Xi Huarong said, “I agree.”
Su ixi was stunned for a mont, she quickly refused, “No no, I’m not worthy of that honor, I can’t be your goddaughter.”
Li Shirui said, “I heard from Xiao Fen that your biological parents are divorced and now live separately, becoming our goddaughter would an having two more people looking after you, right?”
Su ixi explained, “Exactly because I was left unsupervised as a child and grew up unruly, that’s why I dare not be your daughter, I’m afraid of disappointing you.”
At that mont, Su ixi rembered that Su Qiang hadn’t called her for many days.
Forget it, if he doesn’t call, he doesn’t call. After all, he isn’t her real father, and even if he did call, she wouldn’t answer.
Gu Wei looked at Su ixi, his gaze filled with pity.
Gu Wei had already learned about Su Qiang’s imprisonnt, but he hadn’t told Su ixi.
If she knew the truth, knew that the Xi Family knew the truth, she would likely run further away, probably heading back to Feng City by now.
Commander Bao, Aunt Bao, and a few other officials also looked at Su ixi with envy, Aunt Bao even said, “Xiao Su, just agree, with such godparents, no one would dare to bully you in the future.”
Su ixi still refused, “I… I’ll think about it so more, I really am used to being free, I’m afraid of restrictions.”
“It’s just a goddaughter, you’re already grown up, they can’t control you, just be yourself. Just co over and see them when you’re free.”
Seeing that Su ixi consistently refused, Xi Huarong didn’t want to make it difficult for her, he smiled and said, “It seems we were both being presumptuous. Although you don’t want to recognize us as godparents, we still consider you as our own child. From now on, treat this place as your ho and feel free to co over whenever you want.”
After refusing for so long, Su ixi felt embarrassed to reject again, rejecting again would seem ungrateful, she quickly nodded and agreed, “Okay, I’ll definitely co over often in the future.”
…
After leaving the Xi family, Su ixi sat in the car and let out a long sigh of relief.
She laughed, “Visiting the ho of a high-ranking official is even more nerve-wracking than going to work, I was really afraid of misspeaking.”
Inwardly, Gu Wei complained: The most tense person here is , watching you all act all morning.
The couple pretended nothing was amiss, all the while trying to please, and Su ixi, on one hand, kept refusing while also pretending to be oblivious, isn’t that tiring?
But he could only play along.
Barriers and suspicions among people have to be slowly eradicated, distances to be gradually closed, closeness can’t happen instantly.
Not long after getting into the car, Xiao Fen called Su ixi, “Sister Su, are you still at my house?”
