Chapter 239: Chapter 239: What Happened That Year Chapter 239: Chapter 239: What Happened That Year “At first I was uncertain,” she said, shaking, “until I saw their eldest daughter walk in. Xiao Fen ntioned that her sister was about my age, and this eldest daughter looks so much like my adoptive parents. That’s when I was sure.”

Gu Wei pulled her closer.

“So, what are you planning to do? Do you need to recognize them?” he asked.

He hadn’t expected that his wife would have such powerful parents.

Su ixi shook her head and then wiped away another tear, “I don’t think it’s necessary.”

Gu Wei looked at her; even without words, he understood her thoughts.

For so many years she had been alone; she was used to it. Even if a set of parents, with a strong background, suddenly appeared in her life, she would feel uncomfortable. She had always just gone with the flow, treasuring the present monts. As long as she could get by, she didn’t want to make too many changes.

He held her, “Okay, I’ll listen to you.”

Still, he couldn’t help but wonder if this decision was fair to Mr. and Mrs. Xi? She knew they were her birth parents, yet they were still in the dark.

Xi Wanlin had been extrely active these past couple of days, bringing both lunch and dinner.

During dinner, Commander Bao and his wife also arrived.

Commander Bao entered with his loud voice booming, “Old Xi, you really should’ve told earlier about your hospitalization. If I hadn’t needed to contact your secretary for sothing, I wouldn’t have even known about it.”

Xi Huarong chuckled, “It’s just the old problem. If I had notified you, it would seem like I was expecting a gift. What have you brought this ti?”

“The likes of us soldiers don’t have much. We don’t even indulge in liquor, so what I’ve brought is just so dicinal wine from the countryside, brewed by my father-in-law himself. He says it’s good for back and bone pain.”

Aunt Bao added, “That’s right. Whenever folks back ho get a sore back or legs, they just rub so dicinal wine on it, and in a couple days they’re better. No need to be hospitalized.”

Xi Huarong joked, “Let’s just say I wanted to slack off for a few days. Don’t expose .”

Commander Bao replied, “Understood, you’re usually so busy. If you want a break from work, you can only take sick leave. How have you been here in the hospital? The doctors aren’t haphazardly prescribing you dication, are they?”

“This is the Military District Hospital, who would dare be reckless with dication?” Xi Huarong responded.

Xi Wanfen invited the couple to sit and offered them so fruit.

Aunt Bao glanced around the ward, and perhaps to spark conversation, she said, “There are quite a few doctors from our compound working in this hospital.”

Li Shirui chid in, “Yes, Old Xi’s attending physician also lives in your compound, last na Su. Speaking of which, she’s actually the one who saved our Xiao Fen’s life.”

Xi Wanlin’s face went pale, just as she was thinking of changing the topic, but Aunt Bao had already continued, “Oh, you an Dr. Xiao Su? I know her. She’s Captain Gu’s wife. Such a kind soul; I had no idea she was so skilled dically, even to be an attending physician.”

Commander Bao’s gaze just happened to fall on Li Shirui.

Li Shirui had gone to rinse the fruit. She ca out carrying a plate of grapes, her figure graceful, her profile soft.

Sothing suddenly occurred to him, and he said, “Speaking of Gu Wei’s wife, I rember the first ti I saw her I felt she looked like soone I knew, but I couldn’t quite recall who. Now I know—she looks like Shirui.”

Li Shirui’s movents paused.

Aunt Bao added a comnt, “Now that you ntion it, I do see a resemblance. Xiao Su doesn’t just look like Shirui, but also like Old Xi. Look at Old Xi’s eyes and eyebrows, they’re so similar to Xiao Su’s. Could Xiao Su and Shirui be relatives?”

Xi Wanlin grew anxious and quickly said, “Speaking of looking similar, I was telling Mother this morning that all beautiful people look alike while it’s the ugly ones that are full of variety. Resemblance doesn’t prove anything. Besides, I heard Xiao Su is from Feng City.”

Li Shirui gave Xi Wanlin a sidelong glance, “How do you know she’s from Feng City?”

“…Xiao Fen ntioned it. She’s always coming back and talking about Sister Su, Sister Su.”

Aunt Bao chid in again, “Xiao Fen has indeed been visiting the compound quite often lately. But Wanlin, didn’t you also make a visit? You said you wanted to see Xiao Su, but since you were in mourning, it was inappropriate to call.”

Xi Wanlin’s eyes darted about nervously for a mont before she awkwardly chuckled, “It’s also because my mother keeps talking about Dr. Xiao Su, so I wanted to get to know her more in advance. It was indeed during the mourning period, so I didn’t go in.”

At that mont, Li Shirui and Xi Huarong exchanged looks, but neither made a sound.

Xi Wanlin stayed with Xi Huarong in the hospital all the ti.

Li Shirui asked her, “It’s very late, why aren’t you going back?”

Xi Wanlin answered with a smile, “I wanted to spend more ti with Dad, Mom. Are you going back tonight? Let drive you ho?”

“No need, I’ll stay here with your father. You should head back on your own, there’s only one family bed here, and it wouldn’t be convenient for you.”

“Then, then I’ll ask the nurse to add another bed. I’ll stay here.”

“Your father isn’t seriously ill, he could be discharged from the hospital right now. You really don’t need to worry so much. Go back ho,” Li Shirui said with a soothing tone, but her presence didn’t allow for any rebuttal.

After hearing that, Xi Wanlin had to go ho by herself.

Only Xi Huarong and his wife were left in the room.

Looking at Xi Huarong, who had been a scout and an undercover agent, Xi Huarong had already sensed sothing the mont his eyes t Li Shirui’s.

It was Li Shirui who spoke first, “Everyone says Xiao Su looks like .”

Xi Huarong nodded and then gestured to the spot beside his bed, signaling Li Shirui to sit closer.

The couple always sat close when discussing important matters, as Xi Huarong, a doting husband, believed speaking from a distance created a barrier.

“At first, I just found Xiao Su to be a familiar face, but I didn’t think she looked much like you. Yet, after hearing it from so many people, she does seem to resemble you,” Xi Huarong said. “Shirui, do you think it’s possible that Xiao Su is our daughter and Linlin isn’t?”

Li Shirui shivered, feeling suddenly disoriented, “Do you think there’s a possibility? The thought is absurd, but I can’t help thinking it. Give so advice to stop thinking this way. It couldn’t have happened to our family.”

Xi Huarong patted her shoulder and said, “You gave birth to Linlin without being there, and she was born in Guang City. What was the situation like at that ti?”

“At that ti…” Li Shirui paused to recall, “nothing unusual happened when giving birth to Linlin. After the birth, the nurse took her to bathe, and then I was so tired that I fell asleep.”

“Did anyone co in during that ti?”

“I don’t know. My cousin took care of during my confinent; she didn’t say anything out of the ordinary.”

Li Shirui pondered the situation at the ti.

That day, Xi Huarong took on an undercover assignnt, and all of his information was changed, including his wife’s details.

For his safety, Li Shirui also hid her identity and went to Guang City, where she stayed with a cousin.
