’I will always choose you.’
Lara could not get those words out of her mind. Curtis had said nothing else after those words, but Lara’s mind had been in a state of turmoil.
He would always choose her.
Wow.
Those words weren’t sothing anyone could say so casually, which ant that Curtis knew what he was talking about.
And he absolutely ant it.
Her heart thumped violently. It threatened to fall out of her chest.
She swallowed past a lump in her throat before she spoke again.
"You...I don’t know what to say," she whispered. Curtis shrugged.
"You don’t have to say anything. I just told you the truth. There’s no reason to say a word," he stated calmly.
She shook my head at him.
"I don’t deserve you," Lara managed to say. Curtis raised his eyebrows at her.
"You are the mother of my children, and the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. You deserve all the beautiful things in this world."
Tears rushed into Lara’s eyes. So this was how it felt like to be loved deeply by soone.
"Thank you."
Before Curtis could say anything else though, the door opened and a doctor walked in.
The man smiled at the sight of Curtis feeding his wife, and Lara blushed, slightly embarrassed.
"I can co back for the checkup if this is a bad ti," the doctor said.
Lara’s face beca redder at his words.
"No, please. I already finished eating anyway," she said. Her embarrassnt was very obvious, and it made Curtis laugh.
He cleared away the half eaten food, and the doctor proceeded with the checkup.
A few minutes later, he was done.
"I think your wife should be ready to go in a few hours from now. All you need to do is fill and submit the necessary paperwork, and she will be free to go," the doctor explained.
Lara heaved a breath of relief.
The doctor went on.
"Your pregnancy has also developed a lot, so you’re going to have to stop working. Anything strenuous work should be avoided. The babies are in a very fragile state, and you need to be very healthy for both of them to be delivered safely."
Curtis nodded, his expression utterly serious and unmoving. Lara knew that he was going to take every single word of the doctor to heart, and she began to wonder if boredom was going to kill her before the delivery date.
When the doctor walked out and closed the door behind him, Curtis instantly faced her.
"You heard what he said," he said. Lara rolled her eyes.
"I know, and before you start nagging like an old woman with twenty grandchildren, yes I will stay at ho. Yes, I will not do any serious work. Yes, I will not even make an attempt to work from ho. I will do nothing but sleep, eat and stare at the ceiling while I die of boredom."
Curtis nodded.
"Good. You understand what is to be expected of you. As for being bored to death though, I don’t think that is going to happen."
Lara eyed him curiously.
"Why?"
"What do you an, why? I am going to stay at ho with you, of course. What did you expect?" he smirked.
Laughter slipped past Lara’s lips.
"You are seriously going to leave work and stay at ho with , for months? Co on, Curtis. You can’t do that. Your work is too important for you to just put it on hold," she countered
"It is my company, Lara. I can do whatever I want. Also, I am not just leaving because I want to, I am taking a break because I want to be with the mother of my children. You need , and I promised to take care of you. So there’s nothing to be worried about," he reassured.
Lara shook her head, and there was a glint of amusent in her eyes.
"There’s no winning with you, is there?"
Curtis gave her a smug smirk. The silence that stretched between them was absolutely comfortable.
They were like peas in a pod, warm and happy to be in the sa place.
Lara could feel her emotions growing. The friendship she had with Curtis was starting to turn into sothing else.
She knew what it ant, that the possibility of her falling for him was getting higher with each day that passed.
Lara couldn’t help but get worried though. If she allowed herself to fall in love with this man, what would her life turn out to look like?
What if he decided that he wanted nothing to do with her again, after the childbirth? What if his mother finally got through to him and he decided to ditch her with nothing to fall back on?
Worse, what if he broke her heart in the long run?
Lara knew that her thoughts were slightly exaggerated, but ever since her horrible experience with Mike, her heart had been sealed shut and boarded over with nails.
"Earth to Lara," Curtis said gently, his voice jolting her out of her thoughts.
"What were you thinking so hard about?" he asked. There was a curious smile on his face, and Lara could feel her cheeks turning red.
If he knew that her thoughts were about him, how would he react?
Would I be amused? Annoyed? Pleased? None of the above? All of the above?
She frantically thought of a random explanation to say, but nothing ca to mind.
Curtis was about to say sothing else when the door opened.
A beautiful, mouth watering, absolutely gorgeous woman walked into Lara’s hospital ward.
The woman looked like she had just walked out of a dream, and just staring at her made Lara feel as though she was an imposter.
Lara had no idea who she was, but from the way Curtis’s entire body locked up and went as stiff as a board, Lara knew that her husband knew who the woman was.
"Hello, darling," the woman purred. Curtis sprang to his feet.
His hands were curled into fists, and his face had turned red with anger.
"What the hell are you doing here?" he snapped.
The woman raised her eyebrows at him.
"Co on, you don’t have to be rude," she chided him in a gentle voice.
Curtis looked as though he was about to combust with rage.
The woman turned away from Curtis and faced Lara.
"Hi, my na is Vivian. Curtis and I used to be engaged. I am his ex fiancé."
